So ive played a decent amount of games on the Warlord and Noble difficulties and for some reason this one is a real pain.

Would someone please explain how starvation can be avoided, what to do to fix a city before it starves, ect.

I guess this is one of the few game concepts I am yet to grasp.

Berlin and Essen are on their way to starvation as we speak and
you will notice that Cologne has already starved. It happened 300 years or so ago and I was never able to get its population back up.

There is no lighthouse in that city and no option to build one. Does this mean that Cologne has become useless to me?

Yes... sadly a victory in this game is out of reach but i would like to know what has gone wrong so that it can be avoided in the future.:)

Starvation happens when you consume more food than you have. Every population takes 2 food. So a normal city of 17 needs 34 food to stagnate. More than that and you grow. Less makes you starve. You'll notice that Berlin is :yuck: Every :yuck: more than healthy takes an additional food. My guess as to why Berlin is starving is that you just built a coal plant/ factory that added a lot of :yuck: Either that or it just got poisoned by an enemy spy.

Show us the CITY screen with the mouse hovered over the health bar (above the happiness bar). THAT will explain things.

It's all about the city screen. Berlin is unhappy and unhealthy, both of which lead to starvation. Simple solution is to build health and happy buildings, pausing growth if necessary until they are completed. Also check you're working tiles with food and not jsut assigning too many specialists or working just production tiles. City screen will tell you how much food you're eating and how much you require. Look at the starvation bar in the city screen. If it says something like 30-34 then you are falling 4 food short. Change tiles until you are no longer starving, or, if you are short of food anyway build farms.

Couldn't see Essen on that pic.

But Cologne should able to build lighthouse... however, the placement of the city is heavily overlap with Berlin... (and you know that one tile can only serve one city right? )
More importantly... why Cologne didn't work on those 2 farms at the north ?
check if the governor get switched off, or you manage yourself?

Cologne should have been on the other side of the horse tile. Then both cities wouldn't compete for the same BFC tiles.

I guess he wasn't able to settle in the spot you describe, because of that HRE city located. (Nuremberg? sounds like a German city..... I wonder was that city lost to HRE during previous wars... ?!)

well ... HRE and German is a interchangeable ... most of HRE cities is placed in Germany :p

31 turns to Apollo Program and only 59 turns left in the game...don't think you'll have a chance to win via space race.

Actually, there is nothing wrong with overlap; I tend to squeeze the maximum amount of cities into my empire. Half the cities won't work any tiles, they're just there for per-city bonuses like trade routes, corporations, free specialists and so on.

However, the other points still apply. Each unhappy unhealthy citizen eats 3 food without doing anything but stinking up the place and making rude gestures.

If you can't get Berlin's underlying problems (low happiness and health caps) in order, you don't actually care if half the people starve; they're not doing anything productive anyway.
Your choices are: Assign some more tiles to other non-sick non-angry cities like Cologne and let Berline starve down to a manageable level, or build things in Berlin that raise those caps (markets, temples, theatre etc for happiness; grocer, granary, public transport etc for health).

Yeah, you've pretty much lost that game.

Obviously your civilization is in terrible shape, (you won't be winning this game) but we won't be able to tell you why without a save file.

Upon further review, Berlin had several great artists that I forgot to take off when it began to starve. As for the other two cities that had this problem, I will take into account everything that has been said.

Thanks for the help everyone.

Great artists don't do anything to food. You mean Artists.
