Hello Fellow Die Hard Civ 5 Fans:

I played my first game yesterday on Prince level playing as Polynesia and on Continents plus. My capital is inland a few hexes from the coastline. I have two CS on my continent and no other AI.

My God!!! The relentless Barbs won't leave me alone. Is this normal. I feel like I am doing nothing but defending my workers because if I leave my land gets pillaged etc.

I wanted to play Polynesia for the embark. But I feel like I should play next as Germany to capture and recruit the barbs to my military force.

Being constantly attacked by Barbs at this level normal. Also understanding about building Wonders. You really need to pick one or two at higher levels because the AI basically gets all of them which still surprises me...how they can have already opened so many Social Policies to unlock the Wonders etc.

But with all the new frustrations I am in Second of 9 Ai's. Behind Korea by about 100 points and moving up. I was dead last and like most of you say...Get the NC and focus on science buildings. This I have done. Also working on Culture to get my social trees completed.

Any thoughts would be great on defending against a raging non stop barb war.

Thanks

Just a few random thoughts to help your game:

1. Use your uniques to their utmost. Build your Moais and spam your Moari Warriors. The Maori promotion is going to stay with them, so build a lot and have them take on the barbs and get their promotions for you before going off to explore the world 100 turns before everybody else.

2. Your UA means that you can get to a lot of places before anybody else does. On a Continents + map there are probably a couple of pockets of city states inaccessible by land or trireme. Rake in the early gold for meeting them all first.

3. Get a coastal second city running on your starting continent fast, and get it connected to Honolulu by road. Otherwise your harbors are going to be worthless.

More thoughts as they come to me.

Hopefully you've won that game. Prince barbs shouldn't be much of a threat unless you have raging barbs on, maybe you want to check that the option is disabled.

Also keep in mind that unless you're playing deity or some high level difficulty, the AI will not have the initial resources to make an army to take out barb camps, so you might have to deal with them yourself. A few composite bows can go a long way.

That is the real issue with barbs on Prince -- the AI does a terrible job of expanding to eliminate the fog of war and an even worse job clearing camps, so you have do all the work -- quite irksome.

I play on Prince and barbs are always a problem. I've watched some of the videos of the really good players and they never seem to have no problems with barbs. They'll go a hundred turns and maybe run into one barb.

But me? I've got them invading my territory on turn 10, and they don't come alone.

I will play raging barbs when playing as the Aztecs. And I enjoy that. I end up concentrating more on the barb fighting than doing anything else, but it's fun.

But--after that game, I decided to play as Mongolia last night. And I forgot to uncheck raging barbs. I almost rage quit the game several times due to that. I could not do anything except build units and fight barbs. Finally after 75 turns (epic speed) I had them under control, but my economy sucks as of now.

I'm glad that Browd mentioned that lower levels such as Prince have issues with barbs that higher players don't. I get so sick & tired of high level players saying how easy Prince is and being all smug about it. Well--they don't have to spend much of the early game fighting off barbs non-stop.

And that's also don't understand how they can say they only have two or three ranged units and a couple of melee units for the entire game. I need that many units just go fight off barbs.

And to top it off--in last night's game, two different AI settlers waltzed through the barb fights (unescorted) and forward settled on me. WTF?

You can still.get any wonder you want on prince. The ai is still worthless in that department.

^^Sometimes. I've seen the AI get plenty of wonders and beat me to wonders that I wanted.

It's possible to get a lot of wonders you want on Prince, but not *any* wonder (or all wonders like one poster claimed a while back).

About the Wonder thing. How many Wonders gets constructed depends on the number of AI civs in the game. The bigger the map, the more wonders get build. Since you are playing with 10 civs (including yourself) at least half of those civs build wonders (including yourself) or better to say focus on them more than others. So each of these 5 civs build one wonder.... that's already 5 wonders gone. And considering there are usually 6-7 wonders per era prior to the Industrial, you see that pretty much all of them get build.

That's why you main focus is to build 1-2 wonders from an era that you find the most useful at least early on unless you are Egypt or have some pretty good starting position in terms of production. Later on when you get scientifically ahead of them you can pretty much build every wonder, but even then it is better when production is high. If it isn't then it's much better using that production elsewhere.

I still play on Prince because I don't play all the time. A few hours after work at night.

An epic game could take me two weeks to finish.

I've played and won several games on King, but went back to prince as I just enjoy playing the game for fun.

Plying on epic increases the power of the barbs. Because it takes longer to build units to respond to their threat.
Playing on prince means that the ai is hunting barbs as aggressively, or filling up the map to stop the spawning. You can help mitigate this by placing scouts with extended sight in areas so that barb camps won't spawn (in a recent game I had a 6 long, 3 wide desert peninsula behind one of my cities and just had to position a scout there to stop the camps from spawning).
Most wonders aren't unlocked by social policies, but with many AIs, there is a good chance that at least one I will unlock a given policy and be able to build the wonder.
