Plundered traderoute by barbarians

What happens when a barbarian plunders my traderoute. Does my caravan get killed and do I have to create a new one? Don't want to expierence it first, so therefore this question.

The caravan is destroyed and you do have to create a new one. Also it spawns another barbarian unit.

restart or reload the game. Losing a caravan early is such a big penalty.

I had this happen to me in the Modern era. The barbs were great war infantry and artillery. I couldn't figure out where they were coming from - pretty much every land tile on the map was within sight distance from someone's culture. It turned out the foreign city was in bad ideological distress. I think the "barbarians" were rebels, being spawned as part of the revolution mechanic.

Lesson learned: don't trade during a coup.
