Acken Challenges - #1 Carthage Immortal (6)

Yes thats normal but you are actually playing only half of my mod. Only the xml and lua changes are loaded. The dll and all its changes are not loaded on macs.

Save game changes by the mod are on the dll. This is why you cannot load the save game since the base game does not recognize that altered version of a save game.

A ton of things wont work properly too. For example religious fervour in piety will have no effect on a mac. The tech penalty will work as normal. You wont get back your trade routes if the ai declare war. Etc etc

Gotcha. Well, I guess I'll have that to look forward to, if I ever set up a Windows emulator. Thanks.

Better than Windows emulator is real, native Windows, on a Mac. I can help you get set up if you want.

I'm playing on a Macbook and your mod works fine as long as I create a new game myself.
If you care to post and share, as a kind of sequel to this game, I will play along. You might catch a couple of other people too.

I think Windows users can open games created by Mac users. But of course, why would they bother when they have a better version of the mod available?

well finally finished the game, didnt expect it to go that fast, wonderwhoring worked pretty well, i did some mistakes, could have won it much earlier if i didnt weaken rome.

First time i spamm archeologist like that, and first time i dig some hidden sites, was a pretty fun game.

i'll give more details and send screenshots tomorrow.

T276 CV.

Wow, Phenril, T215? I thought I had a pretty good start going, but I wasn't very close then.

Spoiler :
Fun game! Thanks for the mod and the map, Acken! I thought my position was so strong at T200, I could easily cruise to victory, but both remaining civs really gave me a run for my money and made me fight for it.

In the end, there were 3 civs left. I had taken out Denmark, Morocco had taken out Celts, and Russia took over their whole continent. Since I had built so many cultural wonders (I think I built or captured all of them) I figured cv would be easiest, but it wasn't as easy as I had hoped for. I think not generating much faith made it tougher as I couldn't buy as many great people. In the end, though, no one could resist my IG-Internet-NVC-powered rock concerts and blue jeans.

Spoiler :

I don't think I've ever been offered 55 oil for peace!

No shortage of policies.

Never been behind in science late game on immortal before.

Spoiler :
Well i lost a lot of time cause i dowed rome, which made poland reallly dominant in the other continent, and they started to get a lot of culture.

This game was a huge battleground, bothharald and moroco wanted the poor boudica's death, harald kept harrasing utique but it even scary, the ranged frigates are just insane when they are ready around T150.
after the first peace treaty with harald i took my fleet to help city states and india to fight the bloodthirsty caesar.
liberated 2 city states, 2 indian cities and destroyed a couple of roman cities, which was a really bad idea, getting 2 more culture city states wastn worth the culture poland got from conquering the whole continent, just because i killed so many roman cities and units.

To get such an early win, i did get guilds going asap, rushed acoustic the printing and took all wonders, then beelined archeology(started with frigates to keep me safe and buff the prod) i did way too many archeologist, like 3 or 4 of them couldnt even get a relic cause all my slot were filled.

so around T 150-160 i had every single culture wonder exept partenon, aesthetic was finished around T 140, got a 45 turns long golden age thanks to chichen itza + 2nd natural GA thanks to insane early happinnes + aesthetic + taj mahal. a bit after the end of this one i bulbed a GArtist for another one when i won world fare(no more art slots so...), used a great writer to speed up the T3 tenet for the +34% culture from broadcast towers aswell.

Another mistake was to pick patronage opener, i should have finished ratio to get hotels faster. i also didnt delay a great musician that could have saved me some turns aswell (poped like 5-10 turns before hotels).

what helped a lot is the fact that i had like +150 gpt at turn 80ish ... bought every single cultural city state to avoid AI getting them, it gave me stupid amount of hapiness.

i had enough gold to buy all my buildings aswell, so all my prod went to archeologist and wonders.

wonders built :great lighthouse, oracle, petra, angor wat, chichen itza, sixtine, globe theater, ltop, forbien palace(super late for 1 more art slot xD), PT, uffizi, taj mahal, louvre, broadway, effeil tower.

more feedbacks for acken :
WTF AI really want blood in your mod, this game was a huge battleground, thanks god i had only 1 neighbour to handle, i cant imagine a game being surrounded by AIs in your mod.
the trade with AI was fine in this V6, dunno what you did but fixed the previous version problem pretty well, The only thing that isnt good is the luxes going for 6 gold whatever the diplo is.
Getting a white peace is hard here too, you really have to threaten the AI to get a peace deal...
i like the trade route getting back to home when declared aswell.
dont know if it's me, but tech wise, staying with only 4 cities seems to make a really low science compared to base game, if i had to get to internet it was going to take a long time i think.
Did you lower the hospital production cost? cant remember it in your changes list but it was pretty easy to build and i general dont make them, but for 1-2 turn of prod, why not.
Ocean tiles got some love :p thanks for that, 2F 2H 3G ocean was really really enjoyable.

It's based upon the happiness of the AI, or at least used to be. You can be friends with the AI and if they're swimming in happiness you can't always get 8gpt from them. Which is fine, it's borderline abuse if it's not that way, being able to always sell everything is one of the reasons standard game deity is kind of a joke.

You pretty much can't stay competitive in science with 4-5 cities. I think 6 is where it starts to feel normal, and then more than that you'll see an increase in your BPT.

My last couple of sci victories I've ended with 3000bpt...

we'll see in next game from acken's challenge, but in this one i wanted to go for a pretty big naval dom in the start, but changed my mind when i saw only 1 cap in the other continent was coastal.

some months before i was more of a peaceful player, but this time is over, even if i'm not going for dom, i like going into war to control the game. and in acken mod this playstyle seems to be rewarded.

saw consentient videos and his early game war was pretty nice, i'd love to replay and try to go for early war aswell(the uu are pretty strong) but i'll make a civ break because i'll play something else a bit.

i never uploaded a save to the forum but i'll try.

T279 DomV
I've never played with mods before, but this one is great. The AI is more challenging, but the improved policies and civ abilities feel like I got more at my disposal to tackle a bigger challenge, instead of feeling gimped. Really appreciate the good work.

Had to retry this several times. At first I attempted a composite bow rush, but then got completely destroyed. Second time around one of the AIs completely took over the other continent and I just couldn't keep up in tech. The third attempt ended up in a win.

Spoiler :
Opened with liberty, and tried for a religion even though there are no good faith pantheons. God of the sea was the obvious choice, but all my faith had to come from shrines. I was very lucky to get an encampment quest from Vatican City, and more so when there was a captured worker in it. With that I was able to generate my first prophet, and I enhanced with a free GP from the liberty finisher, managing to grab pagodas and mosques.

I knew I had to take out Bluetooth sooner rather than later because he was too close, so the tech order was to beeline compass to spam out a few galleasses, then education. Shortly after taking Copenhagen I managed to hit frigates, so all the ships got upgraded and I sailed them over to Augustus and burned down a lot of his coastal cities while liberating three CS'es. At this point Gandhi was starting to run away with tech and culture, so right after making peace with Rome I Dow'ed India. It was a bit tense because by that time Gandhi already had submarines that can one shot my frigates and GWBs, so I had to place a lot of embarked workers near my fleet to see them coming. Fortunately Gandhi never had the chance to make a lot of planes so I burned down all his coastal cities. His capital was inland so I never expected to be able to take it with ships, but it turned out that Delhi was only 4 tiles from the coast, so battleships with range can actually hit it. I only needed to sail over a single lancer to capture the city.

At this point I wasn't sure how I wanted to win. I planned to try a freedom SV because Dido's UB made so much gold, but Gandhi went order with 180+ tourism while I had only 20, and I didn't think I could handle that kind of ideological pressure. At T250 or so I didn't think I had enough beakers to get through the tech tree and I have neglected my tourism up to that point, so the only VC I can achieve in a reasonable time was Dom. Warsaw was on the coast, and Moscow was inland but within battleship range. The only problem was Rome, which was 5 tiles inland. What saved me the trouble of having to sail a bunch of rocket artilleries to the other continent was the placement of Ravenna. I captured that city, and was able to place my battleships in there to hit Rome. In the end I had 16 battleships with range + logistics + supply plus about a dozen fighters and the land army to take Edinburgh and Marrakech; can't remember ever making a military that large.

SPs were liberty, then exploration except for navigation school, patronage for scholasticism and to unlock FP. Rationalism was the next tree, but I opened it pretty late. However, with the culture and free policies from WF and IG I managed to fill it pretty quickly. I only started getting ideologies tenets after all that, but the +25% science from factories were pretty helpful. In hindsight it was probably a better idea to go order rather than freedom because with treasure fleets even blank water tiles were 2F 2H 3G, and I think it would have been a lot better to have citizens work those nice tiles instead of sticking them into specialist slots.

One possible issue that I noticed was that killing the units of major civs that DoWs my CS allies do not get me influence. I understand that if the CS follows me into war I shouldn't get influence for killing units near it, but if another civ DoWs a CS that happens to be my ally, I think I should get influence for kills.

Good job for persevering on 3 tries to get a win ;) Glad you enjoyed it.

Hmm it should actually work this way but I didn't test that too much. I'll look into it. Note that when it works it actually sends you a message that you killed a barbarian because I did not customized the message.

Edit: Please also note that you have to kill the major civ units near the borders of the CS, like barbarians for it to work !
