This is a little trick I learned that helped with a diplomatic victory.

I was going for a diplomatic victory and about half way through the game I captured the capital of a civ that had been eliminated and liberated it. In my past experience, a liberated city doesn't last long and is quickly recaptured. But as I wanted to ensure their continued existence, so that I can get their votes during the world leader vote to win the game, I parked six units around the city. Sure enough, just as quickly that I liberated the city, Rome and Ethiopia attacked the city, but because of my units they were unable to capture it. My only concern was if they declared war on me, but as it turns out, they were so busy trying to capture that city for the rest of the game, they never went after me. With the help of the six votes from the recalled to life civ, I won the game.
