The Vikings destroy all the British kingdoms except one - Wessex. The king of Wessex, Alfred the Great, is driven out of his castle into a marsh with a small band of warriors. There he spends the winter, reflecting on all that has happened.

In the spring, King Alfred sends messengers to every shire of Wessex calling on all the people to stand up to the invaders. At Easter he emerges and goes to Egbert's Stone where he unfurls his banners and blows a horn to summon the people and a great host of Englishmen arrive.

With this army he drives the Vikings from England and King Alfred emerges as the representative of all the English people.
