Monotheistic vs. Polytheistic?

So just into my first game in G&K and realized that early on you are faced with a bilateral choice:

1) "Level up" a single religion
2) Found multiple religions (up to 6 I believe)

Seems like you get more bang for the buck sticking to one, develop it and spread it...

What are people's views here?

You can only found one religion.

Up to 5 other civs (in your game; the number varies by map size) can also found one religion.
