Windows 8 - Is it impending doom for Civ2?

I am playing Civ2 MGE on windows 8. I couldn't get it to work using Masterminds most recent patch...crashed every time. I had an older version (1.2 i believe) of the patch on my old windows 7 machine. Copied and use it with no problem at all.

I have tried it. Everything works until you try to build a second city, then the game crashes. I do not know why this is.

Has anyone been able to run it in a virtual XP mode?
