Rat16 - warmongers go immortal

lurker's comment: Seeing as the last turn was Jul 01, 2006, 06:25 PM I will officially say goodbye to ThERat series.

I know I can barely find the motivation to be play solo games with the RB Epics. My last one was an incomplete, and that isn't the most recent.

 Still can't decide exactly what it is, but Civ4 doesn't have the addiction factor of Civ3. Between upgrading to 1 gig of memory, and the patches the issue isn't response time.
While the late game a much better challenge, it is to much of a time suck.

it's hard to put it in words what is exactly the issue. I can barely play SG's because after 10 turns Civ4 I am burned out...
maybe it's what most C3C fans feel...different kind of addition for the younger players that came onboard with CIV.
The come from behind challenges are gone...which is pretty sad

IIRC, it is a nasty position to play from. You are stuck in a war you can't get out of without giving up a town. I am guessing the option is to give up a town or else watch the AI send units into your territory that you can't stop from pillaging. (based on ThERat's report with a guess at the last bit).

I think the actual position has a lot to do with the lack of enthusiasm and its not just Civ4 in this case. We made an error starting the war and should have gone after easier prey.

Its hard to play when you are outclassed and in Civ4 unlike Civ3 there is only so much you can do to bend the odds in your favor what with no unit bombard.

If anyone feels up for playing this and getting us out of the war, then I would go for it. I am thinking we should just take our lumps and try to trade away our most useless town. The other possiblity would be to save enough cash for peace.

The things I enjoy a strategy game are aggressive expansion, fast-moving wars, and dramatic turning points. In Civ IV expansion is punished; wars are slow; and Great Leaders and Wonders mean less than in III, because they're so common. The result is a very bland playing experience.

As for the careful accumulation of Great Person points...who on earth thought that this was an exciting mechanic? Civ is supposed to offer the fantasy of being Napoleon, not an accountant.

I was thinking about some of the things I have been learning in the game since we played this last - especially about the power of whipping. I wanted to see if the use of the whip could turn the balance.

The answer is yes. I took out two of Khan's towns and was able to end the war favorably for us. I played 25 turns.

The game if we wanted to continue it would still be difficult. We are behind in tech - the war was long and slow and killed research for about 20 or so. But we have two more towns instead of giving one up for peace.

We are friendly with two civs and pleased with one, perhaps not a great thing in a warmonger game, but then again it can't hurt. Note also we are working on Canon - a key tech in war monger games.

Do people want to try playing this some more or do you all feel it be left to rot?

If the rest of the team wants to take this game up again, I am fine with it. Having no acces to the game at the moment, I need to wait for a while to comment.
Anyone else up for this?

Well done!
Wouldn't have thought it possible to extort a favourable peace agreement from Kublai. However, things still look pretty bleak. Roosevelt and Cyrus are running away in the tech race. We need to stop them, but unfortunately they have a defensive pact.
It doesn't help that they have no neighbours, which we could ally with. I would suggest to train an invasion force, until Steel comes along. Then attack and switch to self research towards Redcoats. We'd be up against the tech leaders, so there wouldn't be much point in researching techs for trade.
York only needs 156 beakers for the next Great Person. It is currently at pop 2 and grows in 4 turns. If we make one citizen a specialist, we can get the next GP in about 15 turns. (Assuming we make the next citizen a specialist, too) I'm not sure which techs the Great Person could get us, though.

My thought was that we were short on buildings like banks and libraries. Rather than going straight for a Military build up, I was thinking we should take time to build those. In the mean time we should have enough units to take on France who is down to 2 cities or so. We could fight them with existing units while we build up our infrastructure. After taking out France we decide where we want to go next.

With cannon it is possible to fight even if the enemy is ahead of us in tech (as long as they aren't too far ahead. We could work toward Cavalry and Rifles while taking on Mongols, Persia or America. Ideal would be if we could bribe Persia or America into a war with the Mongols - I just don't know where we would get the resources to do that. If either one didn't have steel, then it might work. Once one attacks the Mongols, it should break the defensive pact and we can attack one of them only.

I am willing to play this. I would wait until ThERat gets back and can look at it.

ok, we got Till, Greebley and myself willing to play. Till, do you want to take it up?

I'm game and will take another look at the save tonight. My suspicion is that we'll have to go on whipping like maniacs to win, which makes infrastructure less valuable.

lurker's comment:

I agree with all this, so at least I'm not alone. :)
C4 is both boring and tedious to me compared to C3. Just my personal preference. I have not played C4 in months. Currently I'm too busy to play any C3 SG's and frankly after finally getting that elusive AWD Pangaea win :king: there were no more interesting hills left for me to climb. I do miss playing with the Grumpy Old Men though. Those were some fun games!

I do understand the C3 vs. C4 comments. I hit over 100 in the LK series for C3, yet I would be surprised to hit 50 with C4. Even the multiple month break I took only get me back to 2 at a time.

The model is a lot more challenging in C4. Combat is a much larger challenge. However, combat is too much work in C4.

well, these days I rather play a C3C game than any CIV. Though both are repetitive in the long run, C3C simply is fun to play, CIV much less.

Sorry for being behind schedule. The weekend did not develop as expected.
If we raze France, Persia and USA will fill the gaps. We can't hold Lyon and Paris, because of cultur pressure. It is probably still our best application for our military, if we take a break for infrastructure, though.

Should we run 1+1 engineers in York, we could get Steel from them. (According to this link)

For what it's worth, this has been a blast to follow. :D While I haven't moved up to this level of play, I have learned a great deal by following the game.
I'm just happy to have survived my first Prince level game. Didn't win, but I did survive through to the end.

it's nice to read all those lurker's comments ;)

Till, honestly, I didn't have a look at the save, I was waiting for your turns to finish to play my turns. So, I guess engineers there are fine.

Inherited turn:

Reactivate a few garrision troops and send them towards France. The rest of army will follow suit shortly.

1:

Kublai gets fish for 3gpt and Alex pigs for 3gpt.

2:

Our caravel meets some USAnian cavalry.

3:

Seattle is defended by two riflemen.

4:

Paris is defended by:
5 Longbows
4 Catapults
2 Spears
There is also a galley and a settler present.

5:

Lyon:
3 Longbows
3 Mace
2 Catapults

Declare war on Nap and snatch a worker.

6:

Minor skirmishes. Take some artillery fire and kill a few French units.

7:

Getting ready for the siege of Lyon.

8:

I lose two grenadiers to catapults. What the... ?
Nap tries a relief attack in the north, sending a catapult and a grenadier against New Sarai.
Raze Lyon, losing a grenadier and a catapult.

9:

The peace deal with Kublai expires. Our caravel sinks a French galley filled with a longbow and a settler.

10:

Our army moves towards a hill covered with forest near Paris.

----------->The Save<-----------

why raze Lyons?

I'll take this save, i feel bad not playing at least one turnset.

I felt it would just be in the way in future quarrels with Perisa. The same applies even more to Paris, which is neatly between USA and Persia. Keeping either would be more hassle than it is worth, in my opinion.
