Acularius' GEM for Caveman2Cosmos

Added Giant Sequoia and Redwoods

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sequoiadendron_giganteum

http://wwww.savetheredwoods.org/redwoods/coast-redwoods.php

any additional location suggestions for giant trees are welcome.

Added forest cover for large areas from several maps
really mostly in North America and Europe there was vary little large open areas so areas like France, Germany and Eastern Europe received much more tree cover but theirs still open space. most of the eastern united states is covered. Who ever made the map originally must have used more modern distributions

http://www.global-greenhouse-warming.com/deforestation.html

http://www.globalchange.umich.edu/gl.../deforest.html

along with some prime timber and clams representing the huge population that formally occupied Chesapeake bay.

now all that i can see need added is more ancient forests and rock formations.

That took a good few hours.

Awesome! And you added the Chesapeake clams! I was going to comment about that last one earlier...

Now, not to be a broken record (but the squeaky wheel gets the grease)- but what about the fish resources off the eastern Spanish coast? I must remind you again that the fish catches there *dwarf* those in the Adriatic (are more than 125% greater) according to the map you posted- yet there are currently no fish resources accessible to the standard BFC of cities on the Spanish coast...

i already added them.

Great!

And, since you were asking for more ideas earlier, I have another naval resource that deserves addition to the map...

Whales in the Strait of Gibraltar

http://www.firmm.org/en/research/articles/the-strait-of-gibraltar

http://www.whalewatchtarifa.net/eng/strait-of-gibraltar.htm

http://dolphinsafari.gi/whales/

And those are just a few of the first links to pop up on Google...

You see, there was some discussion earlier in some of the suggestion threads about how there need to be more Whale resources in the more southern latitudes (the code to spawn them has remained more or less unmodded since the beginning- so it highly unrealistically only spawns them in polar latitudes). This is more difficult to achieve in randomly generated maps as it would require rewriting parts of the original game code, but a scenario map like GEM is the perfect place to do it!

The Straits of Gibraltar, due to their unique situation at the only access point between the Mediterranean and Atlantic, as well as rich nutrient upwelling in the area that creates ideal feeding grounds for whales, is one of the best places to find whales on the planet- even now, with excessive naval trade passing through the area every day.

As such, I suggest adding a Whales resource in the Strait of Gibraltar itself. No need to debate where the most realistic place is to put them- the straits themselves can clearly be identified as the single-tile opening between the Mediterranean and Atlantic...

I also suggest adding a Whales resource near the Balaeric Islands (the islands east of the Spanish coast). This is also a prominent feeding ground for a great number of whale species, including humpback and sperm whales. Here are just a couple links in support:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mammals_of_the_Balearic_Islands#Order:_Cetacea_.28whales.29

http://seamap.env.duke.edu/dataset/807/html

This location is a little trickier- but I'm sure you can find a good spot. If you can figure out a way to open the map being reported in the second link, that would probably give you the most accurate data on where to place the whales. If not, I would imagine the most realistic place is east of the island, where the water is deeper...

Another resource:

Mauretanian elephant herds

First of all, it need be stated that modern naming has totally confounded the ancient names of the kingdoms and regions of North Africa. I am referring to ANCIENT MAURETANIA (yes it was spelled with an "e" after the "r", not an "i" most of the time), now modern-day Morocco, not the modern nation of Mauritania:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauretania

The western coast of this region was once "abundant with elephants", which were eventually captured and hunted to extinction in Roman and later times... See the book linked to in the Project Gutenberg index below, which discusses the importation of ivory from Mauretania by King Solomon at one point:

http://digital.library.upenn.edu/webbin/gutbook/lookup?num=2331

The most appropriate place for the Elephants resource seems to be in the forest to the southwest of the Wheat resource along the northwest coast. This is both approximately where the sources appear to be referring to, and the most accurate location for the resource- as the elephants of North Africa are a mainly forest-dwelling species (they form a distinct species from the larger Asian Elephant- which prefers more open terrain).

I am working on a pre columbian version of SEM (standard size map.) Unfortunately I can not load GEM for ideas due to the ancient computer I have. So I have a few questions for you.

As well as the obvious candidate, no Horses in America are there any other resources you have excluded, wheat, Barley, coffee for instance.

In the old world No potatoes, tobacco, cocoa, llama, guineapig and corn. Again any others?

I was thinking pumpkin, papaya and squash.

Rubber is another candidate (almost) as it was taken from Brazil to the Far East. The exception to this would be Russia, they have a dandelion which produced a type of rubber. Also SW USA and Mexico have a shrub that provides rubber.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

BUMP: Any feedback? If not, I will just post my current version of SEM. :(

oh, i can take some screen shots for you if you want.

No - that's OK - just wanted conformation on my thoughts about placement were in the right direction.

SEM is about a quarter the size of GEM, so is very restrictive in what you can place, if you are trying to be nearly accurate.

But then - if you make major changes in a region, yes a screen shot may give me idea's (room permiting).

Thanks. :)

Ok, Redwallyzl, so are you still working on GEM? Are you planning on incorporating the Gibraltar (and Balaeric) Whales and the Mauretanian Elephant herds?

Also, I have one more VERY IMPORTANT resource I was SHOCKED to discover had not been implemented in the map:

"Eastern Desert" Egyptian Gold Deposits

http://www.goldgold.com/gold-in-the-ancient-world.html

http://www.tms.org/pubs/journals/jom/9703/meyer-9703.html

http://www.miningweekly.com/article/gold-mining-in-ancient-egypt-2012-06-08

http://www.utdallas.edu/~rjstern/egypt/PDFs/SE Desert/KlemmAU.JAES01.pdf

There should be a Gold deposit in the Desert Hills east of the Nile, on the west coast of the Red Sea (I suggest next to the Stone Deposit- as this is the closest empty location to where the Gold actually is, and will avoid needing to move other resources around).

Historically, gold production in Ancient Egypt dwarfed that of other civilizations until the first millennium BC. However, currently on GEM, Egypt's only access to gold is the alluvial deposits far up the Nile- which don't really become available to an Egyptian player/AI until Egypt has expanded quite far up the Nile into the Nubia/Ethiopia region...

The deposits in the hills east of the Nile (in Egypt's "Eastern Desert"- the northern area of hills east of the Nile and west of the Red Sea) should contain a Gold deposit to reflect the extensive deposits and gold mining operations in that area- some of the richest in the world until at least around 500/600 AD, when their production began to gradually decline (comparatively little gold mining occurs in this region today- although there still is some).

@Redwallzyl

Please post here your newest GEM when you finish
It will be good to see it in official v35 release :)

Alright this "should" be the last version for awhile unless someone has any alterations or corrections.

Added whales in many places.

http://www.maps.com/map.aspx?pid=16004

Added tons of forests (and removed some but not many). corrected deciduous vs coniferous and snowy forests to look better and conform with real distribution as well as forests on some mountains like the Appalachians the Canadian shield (Rocky Mountains in Canada) and the alps.

http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?useExisting=1&layers=de2bf088888c4ce3a6b37dc633b73f0f

Removed tundra from Switzerland. it as causing some weird things like making Sami culture by the Celts also Switzerland isn't tundra. I think the tundra distribution is a bit weird in some places it doesn't seem to fit some areas that its in and without terrain damage serves no real prohibitive purposes. I'm thinking areas like the the Rocky Mountains and the upper Zagros/Armenia. also the Zagros, should they have forests? its more like light tree cover.

Implemented previously mentioned changes from Northstar.:goodjob:

When y'all package this, we might want to consider making sure that the civs that were removed but are still in use on the map are included in the download.

I've been working on a few changes with savannas and tall grass and would like some input. the red areas marked tall grass should they have the vary tall grass tile? and the savannas, should i cut into and use the forest between it and jungle? should i use it in all the places marked like Australia and South America? as well as the deserts in south South America what should i do with those? their just plains right now now. and should i drastically cut into the sub Sahara African savanna and replace the forest (not the jungle) with savanna?

http://clasfaculty.ucdenver.edu/callen/1202/Landscapes/Biogeog/WrldBiome.jpg

The attachment is not found. The very tall grass was intended for grass which is over 6ft/1.8m tall. As it was in the fen lands of Europe. It is the mega flora of the mod :D.

In the Pampas of South America yes. Not sure about North America. It was intended as a niche or small biome not a large one. However many things in C2C are used in ways unexpected by the developer. I added this terrain feature but if you feel it is right for what you want to achieve in the map then go for it. I can't remember its affect on animal spawns at the moment is all.
