Ekmek requested that City States Leaders be revamped so the leader icons mesh better with Firaxis' art design.

As suggested by sukritact, this is a place to divvy up the work and share what we're working on. I suggested splitting it up by alphabet, but perhaps it would be better if we "check out" a leader that has inspired us.

sukitract also brought up the good idea that some prior work for civilization mods can be co-opted for use in this project. For example:
sukritact said:
I have Lorenzo de' Medici (Florence), Songtsän Gampo (Tibet), Ali ibn al-Hassan (Kilwa). I know JanBoruta has Eannatum (Sumer), István I (Hungary), Pope Pius IX (Vatican), Isienmwenro (Benin), eze Nri (Nri), Bulan (Khazar). Luegi; should also have a number of icons.

FWIW, I've shared my full Photoshop project here (if you just want the simple template shared on the other thread, you can get it here).
[EDIT: Actually, just use this circle frame to center the icon and ensure it looks good ON TOP of the circle layer, but turn the circle layer off when submitting.]

The backgrounds for each of the leaders should be tinted to match the city state's trait:
Red for militaristic :c5war:
Yellow for mercantile :c5gold:
Cyan for maritime :c5food:
Magenta for cultural :c5culture:
White for religious :c5faith:

I've suggested we start on those labelled 'all' and 'G+K +' on the spreadsheet because the BNW leaders have not yet been finalized, but if you've got a great idea, feel free to run with it. The old leaders are not by any means set in stone, either.

I've added a new column to the spreadsheet, "Assigned" to specify who is working on what. The asterisks on the left indicate which ones are done (or at least have a reasonable placeholder).

Alright. :)

Here are the icons I have now. Some can be used in CSs different than their base civ, I guess. However, if possible, I would avoid duplicating too many icons, so people using custom civs wouldn't be confused (but maybe I'm overthinking a bit :) ).

Links only, so we don't exceed the image-per-thread limit.

Spoiler :

Manuel I of Portugal - can be used as almost any Euro medieval/renaissance leader, my suggestion: Genoa.
(mod by JFD)

old: http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/Civ 5 Art/iconrobrecht.png
new: http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/iconrobrecht2a_zpsac874759.png
Robrecht III of Flanders, my suggestion: Antwerp.
(mod by Moriboe)

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/Civ 5 Art/iconterauparaha.png
Te Rauparaha - Maori, doesn't really fit anywhere, but maybe with some modifications it would be used.
(JFD)

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/Civ 5 Art/iconharald_zpsaaa8ecfb.png
Harald Fairhair/Haakon Haakonson of Norway. All Viking civs are there, but he could pass as Yaroslav or Oleg for Kiev.
(JFD)

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums... Art/Civ 5 Khazaria/iconbulan_zpsca87fae3.png
Bulan of Khazaria - same as above (Kiev).
(Moriboe)

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums...Art/Civ 5 Hungary/iconistvan2_zpsd9ac9aa0.png
Stephen I of Hungary - Budapest.
(JFD)

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/iconpiusix_zpsacf01684.png
Pius IX - Vatican City.
(JFD)

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/iconshivaji_zpsef623914.png
Shivaji of Maratha Empire. You would have to ask Pouakai or Sukritact for permission, but maybe he would pass as a leader for Colombo.

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/iconharappaleader_zpsf2d1d611.png
Leader of the Harappans. Not sure if usable.
(Tomatekh)

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/iconezenri_zps99a691af.png
Eze Nri - could work for Ife.
(Moriboe)

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/iconisienmwenro_zpsf73fb066.png
Isienmwenro - it's actually a unit, not a leader, but it also is a candidate for Ife.
(Tomatekh)

http://i1280.photobucket.com/albums/a487/Jan_Boruta/iconeannatum_zps702e2675.png
Eannatum of Sumer - leader for Ur.
(Irkalla)

The first 10 icons I could start working on soon:

Belgrade (Karadjordje)
Brussels (Leopold II)
Bucharest (Vlad III)
Buenos Aires (suggestion): Jose de San Martin)
Byblos (suggestion: Ahiram)
Cape Town (Jan van Riebeeck)
Geneva (John Calvin)
Jerusalem (Solomon)
Kiev (suggestion: Yaroslav the Wise)
Milan (Gian Galeazzo Visconti)

@janboruta How about using your old Enrico Dandolo icon for someone else? With BNW, it kind of goes to waste. Also, the old Albert icon you did for Prussia, before Frederick the Great became leaderhead, could probably see some use.

Spoiler :

I'm relatively accustomed to Libertadores now :p ... so I could make a José de San Martín...

If you want an Eva Perón though, it could come in handy too.

I also could modify my David Icon for a Solomon.

And I'll try working on Pius XI

That seems unnecessary. The one that has been contributed is perfect.

Didn't know there was one already, sorry about that, but yeah you're right... Will see which other to do. :D

I think he would be better for Buenos Aires (or it is just me that dislikes leaders from after WW2 in Civ :p). I have a base for icon for him now, but I bet you would know more about how to draw him.

I also could modify my David Icon for a Solomon.

I thought about it yesterday, it is a great icon. :)

Okay, here are my older icons adapted to fit new roles. Note the starburst effect and background matching the CS focus. I still have to convert my old Enrico Dandolo into Andrea Doria for Genoa. And if Robrecht III won't be good for Antwerp, I could also make Mary of Burgundy if I have the time.

Spoiler :

Antwerp (Robrecht III)

Budapest (Stephen I)

Ife

Lisbon (Joao II / Manuel I - for G&K)

Ur (Gilgamesh / Eannatum)

Vatican City (Pius IX)

Hey, I want that border to show off the icons :p (found it on the first post, nvm)

Amazing icons anyway! I specially like the Ife one.

EDIT: are we having specific background colors for each type of city-state?

EDIT: are we having specific background colors for each type of city-state?

Yes. At least that's how I understood it. I decided to discard the icon's border color in favor of specific background color (more color = more visibility). A golden border looks better and doesn't break the art style too much.

I'm using:
Red = Militaristic
Yellow = Mercantile
Magenta = Cultured
White/Cream = Religious
Cyan or Cyan-green = Maritime

So far I have represented all types, except for Cultured, so you can use it as a guideline :)

And the icon for Ife is an adaptation of the leader icon for Nri Kingdom by Moriboe (I hope he'll release it soon :) )

Progress! (Not nearly as good as jan's yet, but gettting there)

Spoiler :

Tribhuvan of Nepal (Cultured)

José de San Martín of Buenos Aires (Cultured)

Solomon of Jerusalem (Religious)

This looks awesome; the artwork presented so far is fabulous.

I wanted to make a few suggestions for leaders for city-states that don't currently have leaders listed:

Mbanza-Kongo - Nzinga

Samarkand - Timur

Sofia - Simeon I

Vancouver - William Lyon Mackenzie King

And to gather up the other suggestions (which I agree with) in this thread in one place:

Buenos Aires - Jose San Martin

Byblos - Ahiram

Kiev - Yaroslav

Sumer - Eanaatum

Oh, and I want to suggest Hiram in place of Antigonus for Tyre.

Loving the John Calvin icon.

Ok... I think I'll make the following now:
  • Queen Nzinga for Kongo
  • Po Ngbe for La Venta (Olmecs named all their kings Ku or Tu, while Po Ngbe is a specifical name of a historic one)
  • Victoriano Lorenzo for Panamá City
  • Phoenician city-states

I have a question for all the Phoenician city-states though, will we have a different leader for each, or only one for all?

I have a question for all the Phoenician city-states though, will we have a different leader for each, or only one for all?

Different leaders would be better, as the cities for some time were self-governing. We'll have Ahiram for Byblos (I'm doing an icon), Hiram/Pygmalion for Tyre, but I can't think of another leader for Sidon.

Oh, and I want to suggest Hiram in place of Antigonus for Tyre.

This. But to make him different from Ahiram, let's call him Hiram I, with the numeral.

Ok, you go with Ahiram then... For Sidon: Eshmunazar II?

OK!

So I've added all of the suggestions from both threads to the spreadsheet in the first post. All of the ones in italics are ones that I already created (and are included in the Photoshop template; note that a couple were made for Ynaemp and More City States support).

Po Ngbe for La Venta (Olmecs named all their kings Ku or Tu, while Po Ngbe is a specifical name of a historic one)
As I mention in the other thread, I picked the title because the historical Olmecs aren't from La Venta, but Po Ngbe is fine with me! Po's mask is an interesting alternative to the La Venta stone heads.

I always wanted this to be a community project, so I don't want to step in and say how it's going to be (unless we reach an impasse). At this point, I think whatever we can do to make our jobs easier would be best. There's always time to go back and make it "better" if an artist is so inspired.
