I started playing a few nights ago. Decided against elaborate exploration and founded Thebes on the river in -3950. In retrospect a bit of exploration would have been useful. The rivered forest would have allowed a size 1 settler. With no forests or shield specials all I could produce were 2 shields per turn which delayed my first settler production quite a bit.

Ran into Germans and Carthaginians fairly early. Appeased both by giving them a tech. Soon Carthaginians sneak attacked me while Germans held to an uneasy peace. By -450 Germans rose to Supreme, asked me to declare war on Babylonians, and declared war on me for not doing so. While I was trying to hold my defensive line against those two, in -400 Celts landed a horseman and a Catapult near Memphis. Tried appeasing them too, but a turn later I had 3 wars on hand. How did it get so chaotic so fast!

I tried to play #158 & 159, but only for a few turns. Playing scenarios just is not my cup of tea.

As for #160, I chose to go for conquest. With (presumably) only one big continent and no key civ the tech tree should be rather difficult to climb.
We received quite a lot of techs through huts and AI, though not always the right ones. We had trade very early, even before monarchy!

When December came I had three games to choose from.

I did play GotM 159 (the WWII scenario) and although I did some good stuff, my play was not nearly as effective as the Professor's exemplary performance. It didn't take too long though, so I had time for another game and I chose this the November game rather than the potentially very lengthy December game (I may come to that next year I suppose.)

So a slightly puzzling game generated map, and no purple, may characterise this. I didn't have an interest in doing any map analysis this time, so just plunged in, moving to the river for the first city. Looking to settle more cities and get monarchy - it was a bit old style compared to anything else played recently.

3950- Found Thebes. Science to 60%. Start on Alphabet.
3700- Discover Alphabet -> CoL. Warrior. Uncovers wheat on river.
3500- Hut: 50g.

So I am behind in population (and settlers), techs and gold, but ahead in wonders.

I'm not sure I can distinguish my defense forces from my offense ones, but in any case the fighting tends to be done by only a portion of the whole army, and it is the location of offense units in relation to the AI that is important.

My units are mostly vet (because of SunTzu) but are only knights and ele's rather than crusaders. This probably only makes a real difference if city walls come into play - ah, as you mention it, the Babylonians, Americans and Germans all have lots of walls.

Looking at the stats Major and Inkerman were about the same in +1 and I quite behind. By +500 major has pulled ahead and I am still a distant third. Haleewud has posted no stats. Anyone else playing?
 
I just finished playing. It was a long boring struggle trying to maximize Population and score. I didn't make it to max Population (I decided it would take too long), so I built the spaceship, launched it and played out to the end. When I launched the ship, I had 102 cities. 11 years later, I had 160. The last few were squeezed into any little spot. I even built about 8 cities in the tundra along the north and south sides of the map.

Anyway, here is the next part of my log, with some statistics. During this segment, I did a lot of trade and not much expansion.

Thanks haleewud for the stats. At +1 haleewud is ahead of my game and behind Major and Inkerman. By +500 I have more cities and settlers, haleewud has more techs, wonders, buildings, boats, and vans. We are both well behind Major and Inkerman by then though. Of course haleewud's game has already started to diverge because of the spaceship focus. Major, Inkerman, and I were set on conquest from the start.

I have played more since +1000 and will be done soon. Getting rid of one city rivals was easier than expected with few casualties and many units not even used. Conquest of Celts went pretty quickly too due to their geography: small island surrounded by many of my cities across the water. Conquest of Berlin was more challenging. It cost a few units and I had to use everything I could throw at it. I then tried to bribe the rest of Germany. But being spread wide with rich large cities made it difficult. I kept running out of money even with taxes maxed at 70%.

In +1340, with only two rival settlers left in the wilderness I switched to Republic for some last minute expansion. White settler was soon bribed and did not respawn. Blue settler is trapped. I have to get a diplomat to it quickly. If it builds a city I will be in trouble and may have to overthrow the Republic.
 
Post 500 I was soon at war with all the others. I finished the game in Monarchy. Cities were razed about as often as captured.

The last stage was three AI all with cities with walls: the Germans, Babylonians and Americans. None were easy, even with many veteran knights. Large forces needed to be built and gathered, and it was not possible to always have the right units in the right place when wanted.

The French succeeded the Vikings who had succeeded the Germans. The Chinese succeeded the Americans.

And the last AI was the Zulus who succeeded the Babylonians (who turned out to be the hardest to defeat.)
 
Being consistently 4th till +1000 I know I am not a contender for the green star so here is my full log to the end.

The Republic phase at the end lasted more than I expected. The Viking settler was on forest and moving. I trapped it with my army but it took a few turns to get a diplomat out there. And then the French appeared and immediately built Paris. I had to revolt and get out of Republic to get rid of them.
