Democracy Guidelines

The government will be split into two houses, an executive and legislative. Elections will be held every six years and presidents will hold six year terms. People can vote for their choice as president, and then their choice as congress. This is how an election will look.

  • Party
-General Ideals
  • President
-General Ideals
  • President
-General Ideals

  • Party
-General Ideals
  • President
-General Ideals
  • President
-General Ideals

And from there you will vote for the party and the president, they DO NOT have to be the same. You can choose a president and a different party because the party goes towards the Congress. There are 200 seats and there will be a direct percentage from those whom vote. The percentage of Congress will determine how successful the president is in passing laws and also for example, if you like how the president wants to industrialize the nation but you don't like his want for war, you might vote in a congressman who does not want war. I don't care how you vote, just make it bold, and make sure you vote for a president and a congressional party. And if you want to be that Congressman, that would further help the story, you would just have to have the same values as the party you voted for. Thank you :D

It isn't, I played as Argentina for one turn.

I updated the second post that outlines how the democracy will work.

Edit - Whoops, wrong story.

It does but that makes the story so much easier without having immediate anarchy  The empire lives for a short while :D Also I got very lucky, Spain founded Las Vegas and Los Angeles (for some reason it got renamed to San Francisco and I don't know why) in America! So it's very geohistorically correct :D I played through the first bit until elections come up, and the first update may come out tomorrow.

Viva la Mexico ( I role played them in the IOT thread. I was there till everyone reacted negatively when i warned them about the bombing while everyone bombed everyone)

A New Nation: 1811-1814

The Mexican War of Independence

The year 1808 is a bad year for Spanish rule. To the North the tyrannical and imperialistic Napoleon of France has occupied the great nation in Iberia and has placed Spain under its rule. The New World sees an opportunity and decides to strike. One by one nations began to see the lack of power of their colonizer and prepare declare their independence from their mother nation. The client state of Spain was powerless against these movements. Many of these nations drawing from the past experiences of both America and France in their powerful revolutions. Movements grow in Latin America as the Peninsulares are completely pushed out of rule and there becomes a new ruling class, the Creoles, those who were born in the New World of pure Spanish decent. The mulatto and mestizo remained on the bottom, but peninsulares, those born in Spain sent to rule the colonies, were removed. By 1811, what was once New Spain now declare its independence entirely, Miguel Hidalgo, a Catholic priest wanting to create a new nation of power in the Americas, lead the revolution. He and many other revolutionaries raised an army of farmers and workers, armed them, and trained them to fight, and with Spanish power in its colonies severely weakened, they seized the capital with ease. The revolution had begun.
Spoiler :

Fighting was quick and violent, unlike the American Revolution, Mexico dominated the war. With many of the Spaniards being armed with mere bows or guns outdated by a century, the Mexican peoples trounced over their once powerful overlords. Miguel Hidalgo sadly did not survive the outbreak of the war and was killed in action by one of the muskets used to defend the Spanish forts. The commanders of the Mexican revolution seemed to be in more danger than the actual soldiers, within five months, two more were killed, Ignacio Allende, and Ignacio López Rayón. Their deaths were not in vain as the people fought on under the rule of other commanders, and their deaths became the battle cry for many.

The fighting lasted just over a year, with Mexico winning at nearly every battle, and taking just about every holding in what was New Spain. Even though there was no official war, the monarchy had no choice, but to relinquish its hold on Mexico, a peace treaty recognizing Mexico's sovereignty was signed March 5, 1811, making that Mexico's official independence day, the people recognized not the declaration of independence, but Mexico's recognition. Across the empire men and women waved the Mexican flag and cheered in celebration. The Mexican Empire was born into a new world. Fighting continued in small skirmishes especially in the lands around Central America, but this was to be the concern of a later date. Right now, revolutionary fervor shot through the nation, and the people were just happy to be free.
Spoiler :

The United States of America watched the Mexican War of Independence with complete hope of a colonial victory. Then, when they heard the bells of freedom and liberty resound across the continent, the Americans cheered for their Southern bretherin. Despite the lack of democracy, America was sure it was to come soon, and that the loss of a colony was good news regardless of the colony's government. With relations between America and Mexico currently stable and good for all, a free trade agreement was made. Mexican merchants now shipped and sold their dyed products to America in return for salted cod from the New England states.

The Guatemalan Conflict

In 1813 though, a new trouble soon befell the Mexican Empire. There were troubles of increased skirmishes between Mexican and Spanish citizens near the area around Guatemala, so Emperor José María Morelos decided to move in the Mexican army to deal with the problems. Fortunately for Spain, 1813 was also the year of France's leaving of Spain. Spain now had some of its power back and would not take lightly to an invading army in one of its last colonies.
The Spanish viewed the movement into their territory by Mexican soldiers as a declaration of war, and treated it as such. Only two years after their peace, another war had begun. This one would be different though as it would be made by two official nations. Along with Spain's war on Mexico, the Ottoman Empire had joined on the side of Spain because of old treaties made years earlier concerning a war in Europe, but the papers still required Turkey's involvement in Spanish wars. The people of Mexico did not entirely agree with this move, and the integrity of the Empire soon began to falter, but they would fight this war regardless of the costs.

An Empire Falters: 1814

The Mexican Revolution

While the Empire's army marched on Guatemala, there were pressing matters in the sands of the Chihuahuan Desert. Royalists had fled to the Northern reaches of the desert where they took refuge from the hostile Mexican government that had no sympathy for those in allegiance with the crown. Upon hearing word of the declaration of war, they began to march on the unprotected Mexican provinces on the frontier regions. With aspirations to create a new Spanish colony they were going to bring conquest to the city of Las Vegas. Fortunately for Mexico, using captured Spanish artillery and Mexican soldiers, they managed to intercept the royalists and after a fire fight, made the area safe.
Spoiler :

The army neared the capital of the Guatemalan colony, and they were prepared to liberate it. As they marched on, they met nearly no resistance. The superior power of the Mexican army awed all of the peasants of the colony and no one dared put up a fight. Through the dusty trails they marched on until they were met with some Spaniard soldiers, armed with muskets and knives. Their attempts to slow down the Mexicans were futile and they were quickly repelled.

They eventually met the main defenses of the city and the fighting quickly began. Armed with no artillery, the Mexican army was hopeful that there would be little need for it, and this was a very hefty risk to take. The rurales charged the musket bearing Spaniards and decimated their ranks. Once more they rushed their lines before the superior rifles cleaned the land of any Spanish resistance. The Mexican army claimed victory over the region, and declared it now a province of the empire. Thousands of humiliated Spanish officials could be seen escaping to New Castile in the South. The general and his soldiers proudly marched through the streets of Ciduad de Guatemala, waving their flags to and fro.

Spoiler :

While claiming victory in the battle, the Empire would be defeated on the battlefield known as politics. The people of Mexico did not want a war with Spain, they vehemently opposed it and its very idea. Upon hearing word of the capturing of a Spanish province, the citizens were up in arms. They lost trust in their government and all of its forms. The palace in Mexico City was surrounded by thousands of angry protestors. After Mexican soldiers were ordered to step in and bring peace, the protest became a riot. The soldiers could do nothing against the throbbing mass of people, and many fled their positions for safety elsewhere, and some even joined, shooting at the palace to bring out the Emperor. Slamming anything they could find, carts, logs, anything against the gates, the people were attempting to force entry into the palace. Like a wild bull, they were going mad and wanted blood, royal blood. They didn't want another tyrannical monarchy. The gates were soon to give, and Emperor José María Morelos didn't want to die like that. He then left the safety of his room and headed for the balcony, where he did the unthinkable, and rose a white flag. While many were still trying to make their way in, quite a few had stopped and seen the symbol of peace.

Morelos walked down the stairs to the now docile mass of people. While being guarded by a dozen or so soldiers, they opened the gates, and while the Emperor assumed they would stay peaceful, they didn't. They immediately rushed the guards and threw them aside. Heading straight for José himself. Several of the defected soldiers managed to get to him first and wheeled him away. Then, they found a spot public enough for people to see, but private enough to make the next action possible. The soldiers stood the man against the wall and proceeded to take aim. The captain made clear the purpose.

"For going against the will of the people, and creating a tyrannical regime no better than that of the people we fought for freedom against, the people of Mexico hereby execute you in the hopes of the creation of a new state. A free state." He finished his speech and said clearly, "ready, aim, fire!" And in an instant, the emperor dropped like a fly. The people cheered, but this wasn't the end of their problems. With no governing power, who would lead Mexico?

The answer soon came to a provisional government consisting of military leaders, they would create a system similar to that of America's in the hopes of creating a new democracy. The empire's short reign was over, and so began the reign of the United Mexican States.

The Rise of Democracy: Election of 1814

  • Liberales
-The party is a peace-loving party that wants to bring about a full realization of a democracy with power to the people. As a group they want to end the war with Spain as soon as possible and make nice with them so as to not further strain relations.
  • Mariano Matamoros
    Spoiler :
-He wants no part in the war as he claims it to be a tyrannical decision. He promises to bring about economic reform and increase the output of Mexican markets and trade so that they can bring Mexico out of the depression it is facing.
  • Francisco Xavier Mina
    Spoiler :
-An intellectual whom studied law before the revolution, he wants to make Mexico a nation for its citizens. He wants to spread Mexican culture and knowledge by funding the building of libraries and theaters across the nation. He believes this is the key to bringing Mexico out of its slump.

  • Conservadores
-They are a hard but strong group that wants to see Mexico become even more independent and also wants Mexico to retain power in the executive branch of authority. As group they generally want the war to continue and have more of Spain's colonies join them.
  • Vicente Guerrero
    Spoiler :
-Guerrero reminds the people of Mexico that he was one of the leaders in the original revolution and wants to see Mexico become the most powerful nation in the land. If the legislation will allow it, he would like to have ships bring his soldiers to Cuba where they would have more of Spain's colonies join the Mexican Union.
  • Guadalupe Victoria
    Spoiler :
-Also an original high commander in the war for independence, Guadalupe wants to see Mexico also become a center of power but wants to do it in a different way. Instead of focusing on Cuba, Guadalupe would want to send his troops to mainland Spain, in hopes of having them become a province of Spain. He goes on the theory that like its colonies, Spain is very poorly defended and still weak from Napoleon's reign.

Vincente Guerrero Wins First Mexican Election!

President Vincente rode into victory after it seemed sure that his running partner, Guadalupe Victoria, or his main opponent, Francisco Xavier Mina, would win the election. After the failed run for office from Mariano Matamoros, he told the press he would not run next term, but all other candidates said they would. Guerrero rode into Mexico City on his white steed as the many musicians played Mexico's national anthem. After a short ceremony Vincente was sworn in as the first president of Mexico, and promised to bring Cuba under Mexican rule. He then stated that after that, he would attempt to bring peace between the two nations. His short speech was followed by a roaring crowd, as he and his vice president, his running mate Guadalupe Victoria, went inside the Capitol Building, where they live on the second floor and the Legislation meets on the first floor. A fiesta was held at the government's expense for the night as a celebration of their first president, and his promises of change.

Conservadores Take Over Legislation With 78% Majority!

While the election for president was close, the Conservadores nearly took complete control of the Legislation. With only 44 of he 200 Legislators being of the Liberales, they will have little speaking power, but possibly enough to be useful in topics that aren't as black and white between the two parties. Only time will tell how successful or effective this form of democracy is.

Thank you. Also, that ballot took me ages to make because of the millions of things I had to with it. Click quote and you will see what I had to do  Also, on another note, what's wrong with Spain?? They had longbowmen and warriors! And bombards also! And musketmen??? Has anyone else experienced this??
