France: Choosing someone different this time. The French theme sounds amazingly frightening, with the sense that no matter how hard you try, you will not beat the French and Napoleon will always beat you with his superior military mind.

China: I'm just going to put them out of their misery now. It just doesn't sound very warlike. Now, you could argue that China couldn't have a good, dark sounding war theme due to the Eastern Music style and the Asian instruments, which all mainly are used for happy songs. However, if they did such an amazing job with the Japanese theme, then they could have done better with China's. Oh, and watch out, Rome, my sights are on you as my next target. :groucho:

China comes in at 37th.

Maya: This has got to go next. Some of the parts just make this whole song sound like another peace theme. Especially near the end.

Carthage: Now this. THIS is war theme. Sounds like a bunch of African Forest Elephants marching to the battlefield.

The Inca theme starts off nice enough... and then never goes anywhere, content with just repeating the same thing over and over. It feels like it's building up to something, but it just ends at some point.

The Zulus theme is so unique and appropriate toi the Civ : when you go to war as the Zulus, it really is fun ! It's a big party and you're murdering AI units left and right, this is what you're playing the Zulus for. I just love how cheerful it is.

*Note - I don't think HanNorwood's upvote for the Huns got counted, they should be at 18. I'm upvoting them again to 19.

Huns - very threatening, suits the Huns well. Has a nice tune as well.
Rome - doesn't suit Caesar at all. Their peace theme is terrible as well - disappointing choices.

Showing some love to the Huns. Very intense theme.

Not so much love for the Celts. It sounds like a generic European war theme, not very evocative of Celtic culture. This is something that would've fit Rome better.

Huns: There is something both silly and threatening about this theme. It's havy beats symbolizes Attila stomping cities like they were sand castles, while being incredibly drunk. IT has a "YAR DE HAR DE HAAAAAAR! WAR IS REA-LLY FUN!" thing going about it. And then when the theme nears its end, Attila got so drunk he fell asleep and had a nosebleed and died. It's a bit short, but a good Hunnic war is never long lasting.

Denmark: While it has the feel of an impending navy of embarked units closing into your borders, ready to disembark catapults/Trebs and fire them at the same turn, rush in with a handful of berserkers and crossbowmen, it just slows down to a dull tact midway. Sorry Denmark... :(

BONUS ROUND!

China: It saddened me to see this go. Therefore I made a bonus comment for this one.

This theme conveys anger and scorn. Wu Zetian's scorn, that is. I personally had no problem with her being China's leader for this game (though I have issues with her age. IIRC she was about 50-60 when she ruled China). The shamisen (I think?) conveys a distorted theme that can represent the organized, technically superior army of China as they steadily march towards the battlefield.

And as another bonus note, it seems most of the female leaders have quite scary music.

Polynesia - Arguably doesn't fit with the overall theme of the game, but Polynesia has a unique feel anyway. In any case, this tune sounds very Polynesian (Haka) and the glissandos make it unsettlingly threatening, in contrast to their effect in the peace theme.

Denmark - Dull, short, doesn't go anywhere, getting quieter and slower towards the end. Hardly sounds like a war theme worthy of the Vikings.

Inca : This theme is an empty threat. It starts off well enough, but then always leaves you waiting for the explosion, much like the AI declaring war on you from another continent : threatening at first, but never amounts to anything.

Persia : Feels epic, and while it is maybe a little quiet for a war theme, it just works for me because it just sounds like something important is happening.

After recently winning with the Inca, I have to agree, it's a very underwhelming theme. I guess I didn't notice it much, going to war so little with them.

I'll throw Rome a bone. It's not bad, there's a genuine feeling of dread and impending doom. I can certainly picture an army destroying a city, pillaging and razing it to this sound.

Ottomans war theme is catchy and gives a sense of impending danger as the Janisarys march towards your cities.

Persia - Mournful, but in a good way. The chorus and buildup in the middle, combined with the minor to major modulations, make this theme powerful and moving. It's one of the longest themes but doesn't get repetitive. I like it when the same motifs are used in the war and peace themes for a civilization, and both of Persia's themes are very distinctive; two of the most recognisable.

Rome - I can't really downvote anything else at this stage, this theme sticks out as the worst of all those remaining. It may be slightly threatening, but not in a 'glorious Roman Empire' way but rather in a slow plodding drone. The Romans wouldn't have conquered half the known world had they been forced to listen to this before each battle.

Of all the war themes left, the Maya is the only one that, to me, sounds like nothing but an unhinged mess of tunes. It's just not going anywhere at any point in the song.

Upping the Dutch Vader theme again as to me it is simply the best war theme among many great ones.

Still feel like the Incas should be the next to go. I think people are overestiimating it because of the first 10 seconds which are fine but are pretty much the climax of the song.

While the America war theme is not amongst my favorites, I still do like it quite a bit, and don't really understand why it's being downvoted so early. It's dynamic and threatening, like any war theme needs to be. There are many worse war themes to go before this one is what I'm trying to say.
