Football Thread No. 9

Oh christ Blatter demands that GLT should be introduced after the England-Ukrainian game. Where was his voice two years ago? He hates the English...like Platini and UEFA..all hate us!

They do hate the English, have no doubt about it.

But the GLT is separate from that I think. Blatter is probably just playing politics, pretend he wants it in, and silently not do anything about it. Result will be the same, it won't be introduced because its introduction would hit bribery revenues /patronage in Third World leagues too hard.

There are, you just fix them as well.

Anyway, Corinthians are the first finalists of this year for the South American title, they drew 1-1 with Santos at home. They haven't won since 1999. That was Palmeiras.

Also, Messi rather gentlemanly declines to answer moRonaldo's boasts, Yay!

there wouldnt be hawkeyes in leagues where match fixing is rampant anyway.

You can't say that. It's the principle that worries / threatens them anyway. Introduce it at tournaments, you'll get it in the top leagues; get that, and these officials stop getting the same dinner invites, less of those "independent" business contracts, and so on.

4. Rosario Central (Ros) 36 20 9 7 46 27 19 69
Now Rosario Central lost at home (until then, unbeaten) last Sunday morning to Chacarita Juniors who had so far won no matches away from home..

But then just today Chacarita's eternal rivals and fellow relegation strugglers Atlanta have contended that one of Chacarita's players for that match has also played for Atlanta in the same season and has never been actually authorised to switch sides so conveniently they're stirring up trouble when they're bound to eb supported by at least on other team who ebnefits from this… :crazyeye:

That does sound like normal league shenanigans. I do remember more than one championship we lost due to technicalities, wrong advice by league officials, good will (not complaining and asking for a forfait victory). OR are you insinuating corruption by Chacarita and/or Rosario? Btw. how can Atlanta file a complaint, around here only a team directly affected (in that case Rosario or Chacarita since those two played) can do that?

In other news, this week, the first events of the new European season start rolling around, more important than that strange European Championship in Eastern Europe ;). Yesterday was the draw for the German Cup, today the draws for the Champions/Europa League qualifications..

(Yes, I am procrastinating)

I like FC Zhetysu Taldykorgan, personally. JJK Jyväskylä is good too.

Theoretically anyone can do that but the claim will be trashed in all likelihood.

See here, the title was disputed between Tigre and Arsenal yesterday. Arsenal (the mascot of AFA president Julio Grondona, chaired by his son who succeded an uncle) played at home to Belgrano while Tigre played at home to Independiente (another club that's had the Grondonas as chairmen and managers) and Tigre's coach publicly announced that he'd be happy to settle for not having to play a relegation playoff even if it cost his team the title. :eek2: Yay!

Now, in the second division, River Plate beat Almirante Brown on Saturday with one offside goal and Brown having one goal wrongly disallowed to clinch the title and promotion, Quilmes also won away at Guillermo Brown who were already going to play a relegation playoff no matter what so their coach fielded a reserve/youth team 'to rest his players' while Instituto and Rosario Central both had to face teams that actually tried to play at something. The boys from Rosario lost to Desamparados who were relegated anyway as Chacarita won… and Atlanta lost at home 0-2 to Huracán who hadn't beaten them there since 1976. :wallbash: Atlanta went down early and their players managed to lose the ball even against players who were facing the other way. :hammer2: Instituto also lost at home to Ferro Carril Oeste 0-3 and crapped out on their chances of a direct promotion/title fight.

You really can't pronounce Finnish? C'mon!

If Southampton could even qualify for that. :rotfl:

@Takhisis I'm still very much confused by your description of Argentinian Football Politics... Had to read through your post a few times ;) Btw. my club is supposed to get a new Argentinian player, Sauro from Boca Juniors. The transfer has been heavily hinted at, but not confirmed so far for unknown reasons. Have you heard of him? Is he good enough for the European Champions League? ;)

Yes, you need to take a course before you can start discussing the league system as it's quite complicated, the smaller clubs started drawing up rules to make it easier to be champions (such as never having double-round-robin competitions because they're *boring*, disproved a few posts above) and nowadays most people don't understand the system. It's almost as complicated as a Dungeons and Dragons setting.

So-and-so. We'll have to see, won't we? How much for him?

1,5-2 Million Swiss Franks (around 1,5 Mio €), but that's only a guesstimate, could be anything really...

We don't know what is holding the transfer up, might be that they don't agree on the money, or they are just waiting to see if he injures himself with his last matches in Argentinia?

europa league :rotfl:

The names are funny, not the tournament. (I don't know how to read your post so forgive me if I misunderstood you). It's only logical that in the early stages there will be strange clubs from small to minor leagues. After all, only the best clubs of each league get to the European stage. That's why Southhampton never gets to play there ;) As for the participants, it is a (mildly) interesting tournament, f.e. I'm not interested in the FA cup as well, but you guys in here place a good value on it ;) So while I do make fun of the names of these clubs, I try not to make fun of the tournament (not saying you do), after all it's the only way to get the country point* for Kazakhstan ;).

(*seen a football match in that country)

The Europa league is a competition for mid-table European clubs. It isn't anything special.

I far prefer the UEFA cup format. Bring that back, the Europa league - what a joke!

It isn't anything special, except your team can't qualify for it and, hey, you'd be the first on apitch invasion if Southampton won it.
