What is a good plan for science victory? Ive been rushing pottery->stonehedge then going animals then bronze working. In the industrial era, everyone has arty and im still getting crossbows? is NC #1 priority then universtiys and public schools?

Please give advice for immortal + MP or SP.

It would be so much easier if you give a picture of a save at say turns:

60. (You should have 3 or 4 cities up and focusing on production)

95. (You should have national college built in the capitol at this point.)

120. (You should have education researched along with 2 universities in your cities with specialists being worked)

180. (You should be getting an ideology by roughly this point)

220. (You should have public schools up)

250. (You should have research labs up at this point)

280. (You should have hubble built at this point along with beginning to build the spaceship parts)

300. (You should have won by now)

This dates are really easy to make and they should be possible on every start with every civ. If you are far off on one of these, then post a picture, or better yet save the game at each of these milestones and we can the see what areas need to be improved. I don't want to give a full guide, because I trust that you know a lot of the mechanics, so it is just tweaking build orders and research queues.

Science is all about growth. After Philosophy you want to beeline Civil Service and improve all the riverside tiles as you can so they can be worked. Watery hills should be farms as well. Internal trade route should be sent to the capital, if an expo needs an internal route it is in the wrong place, or the right tiles haven't been improved.
You should be aiming to rush buy Schools and Labs. Although sometimes hard to achieve rush buying at least one university in your capital is nice as then your capital can focus on guilds for example. The top players will probably suggest a 4 city NC with rush buying a library in your last expo. I'm not a top player so I go for a 3 city NC and settle the 4th city the turn I complete the NC.
I'd revise the timescales suggested by fallout3dc a little to schools/ideology at t160, labs at t190. Although these are quite stiff timescales they are doable as long you settle in the right places and focus on early growth

In SP, for any victory type, Pottery usually is the best very first tech.
You can almost always pick one tech right after Pottery other than Writing (such as Mining OR AD) without delaying library construction at all.
It's almost always more important to get the tech(s) for your two or three nearby luxury types than NC, but Philosophy is indeed the top priority once you have done that.

NC is much more important than Stonehenge, frankly I wouldn't attempt to build Stonehenge at all until after NC is completed.

Bronze Working should wait until after you have Philosophy. I would instead recommend getting Archery before then if you are either having barb issues or starting next to the Zulus.

There is a backfill of several techs to be down at that point, I usually stop the backfill and go to an Education beeline via Civil Service after I have techs for Colosseum / Comp Bow + Circus + (with a coastal city) Lighthouse. (If you've NOT gone Tradition, you should add tech for Aqueducts after Civil Service. Tradition gets four of them for free even without the tech. )

agreed on everything joncnunn put, but the only exception to delaying bronze working are either jungle starts or you're either Greece or Persia.

i have been playing civ5 for about 25 hours now but i always seem to fall behind on research. i tend to make buildings which gives me gold or happiness.

You guys here have suggestion too how i improve research time?
I have the complete edition, if that makes any diffrence.

Focus on growth, and science, go for Library, National College, Universities and Oxford Uni as soon as humanly possible for you.

If you play on a low enough difficulty go for the Great Library since it gives you a free tech and a free library in the city.

Also finish the Rationalism tree if possible.

I also recommend you open and complete Tradition as soon as possible. Also settle no more than 4 cities, ICS and liberty isn't for the newly acquainted. When settling you want a new luxury as a rule and look for rivers as riverside farms get +1 to food once Civil Service is researched.

Key is National College ASAP... not tu put pressure on yourself since you are beginner, try to set 3 cities and finnish NC betfore turn 100... Later on try to improve at 4 cities turn 100... and eventualy you go down in turns...

Then as mention... Universities ASAP... then Oxford!

If you can achieve that, assuming you dont play higher level than emperor considering experience, its almost impossible to fall behind.

Early on science is way more important than gold!

And when you get universities up, work those science specialist slots. Do not rely on the city governor to work those slots for you -- won't happen. Manual specialist control is critical.

Those rules cannot be applied if you start off next to Attilla or Shaka. I had to start off focused on military and sure enough Attilla came knocking. I tried for science with a moderate amount of units and he took my main city with double amount of units, so NC very much delayed.

I'd be the last to disagree with Joncnunn, but I think it also comes down to strategies. I love to go wide as I think it it makes the game more interesting. Certainly high is easier to achieve an earlier victory, but I will always go Stonehenge to get a religion and the beliefs I want.

However, I will admit I play to just enjoy the game and not become the best player ever.

One trick I've found useful against Shaka is to cap him before he gets to Civil Service, another is to cap every settler he pumps out. A OCC Shaka is quite easy to deal with, an ICSing one isn't.
For Attila you want melee units and not ranged units as his Battering Rams get cover for free. In fact the quicker you get to Civil Service the better. Pop a scout near his borders to see when his horde is coming and if it is try to bribe to to DOW someone else. Just be vary of coastal cities as an embarked Battering Ram suffers very little penalty attacking from the sea.

Tradition+Patronage+Rationalism can give you a good science start.. I did that with England and eventually ended up with a science lead.. I have the save and could upload it if you really want to see how I did it.
