Final Frontier Demo Up!!!!

Starbases have a two tile border which allow you to access asteroid resources early. And they bombard units and auto manufacture missiles. I see them as being forts they way that forts should have been implemented in CivIV. I think they would be useful in a variety of different situations. I agree that there costs are high though. But I have only played a couple demo games so far.

I really like how starbases are implemented. I think it's great that they're a massive investment but they give you significant control over an area of space and its resources, and act as a very effective forward base of operations. One of the most important things about them that I've found is that they let you launch squadrons at enemy planets before carriers (where friendly planets would probably be out of range) - which are extremely effective in my limited experience.

Jon this is really a wonderful mod, I posted elsewhere how this is probably the first scenario/mod for Civ that I will play on a regular basis. I'm also wondering how the city/planet management will work.... for instance will there be automate worker buttons so the planets will be assigned optimally? and will there be a stop growth button coming at some point?

also, I assume there are no specialists in this mod? what happens if you leave one of your citizens unassigned to a planet, does it produce nothing..

I'm thinking the no specialist is just for the demo, sort of a cut-down version of the full game. Remember, they don't want to make the demo too big of a download.

I played a game where every planet produced at least +2 :food:, so I couldn't help but go over the :) limit. I tried removing a citizen hoping that would work, but it looked like the game auto-set him to the "build to" planet.

I asked Jon if the tech tree etc would be the same in the full mod vs the demo or if the full mod would have more stuff. But he only addressed the tech tree and said it was the same. If the tech tree is exactly as in the demo then there are no specialists providing buildings. I think this mod is great fun and I will spend much time playing it. But I think this mods future will be all about modmods. It is a great foundation but needs much more to make it a full game with loads of replayability. From this mod many many mods should spawn. I'm hoping to make a version of my Civ3 Colonial Space Mod (which only ever existed in my mind).

Had a great time playing this demo but where are the aliens? Is it a human only conflict>? Great stuff anyway.

one question for modders:

you know the ALT-key + unit command? (the city will build the unit again and again)

is it possible to create an ALT-key + building command so that e.g. i can build a bank on all planats of the system ??

thx

However, I remember looking at Sid's tips for the techs and I distinctly remember him mentioning a couple of the techs late in the tree mentioning free Great People (a General and a Spy IIRC) I'd need to confirm this (can someone check the full version?)

So, any of you modders figured out how to remove the 100 turn limit? If so, let me know! 100 turns just isn't enough.

BTW, I'd also like to try this as a OSC (One System Challenge).

Tsk tsk, Methos! Isn't that about as bad as requesting a No-CD hack here?

(one of those things we can't ask for, but I'm with you on that as the demo has succeded in being an EVIL TEASE)

I don't know anything about modding, so I assumed it was just something that could be easily done and was allowed to be done with the demo. If it's considered a "hack" like your suggesting, than I'm editing my post now. I don't and won't promote piracy, even if done accidental.

I apologize to everyone for my major mistake.

Yeah, that kinda drove me nuts too, it seemed impossible to avoid becoming unhappy -- short of intentionally sticking pop on the worst planets (so they are happier to live in a hellhole with no food than on a planet of abundance?!?)

i played twice, on second time was able to build a battleship & take over a system, woohoo! Needed 103 turns to make a serious assualt on his capital though :(

Hey Methos,
Please know that I really appreciate what you've done to keep us all posted on BtS and definitely feel your frustration, I just wanted to keep stuff safe.

I think its one of those double standards that the general public could request on the forum, but not you as a moderator/admin like figure.

I have heard from a few sources that the A.I is pretty weak in the mod. That would be a real shame.I hope it gets tuned up in future patches.

jon, is it possible you read foundation? there are one or two research quotes that state the source as "encyclopedia galactica". sounds suspicious to me.

I liked it a lot! I hope there's an option where you can evolve from ground based civilization to a space based civilization with something like a victory in 2020 as a condition for going into space based civilization.

Not really, assuming the full game is pretty much the same but with a few more Civs and maybe techs. You start in space BUT many reviewers have stated that the game replaces the "Space Race" victory in this game with the Alpha Centauri sounding option for "Transcendence" (no clue what is involved but can only assume its some huge multi system project).

Transcendence is really easy: the last tech on the tree allows you to build Astral Gate Pieces, you need five to win the Transcendence victory (they're even production-boosted by uranium). I almost had a Transcendence win on quick in the demo unboosted (a couple turns short), and I likely would have had it if I wouldn't have accidentally clicked out of Pacifism (losing a turn and the production bonus).
Also, the tech Fusion Cannon is confirm to have Sid's tips saying you get a Great Spy. Can anyone with the full version check that?

EVIL TEASE indeed! after 100 turns things are just about to heat up! and then... You won a time victory!!!

That would be great. I've only played one hacked game thus far and just focused on exploring the war aspects. On quick speed I was able to take out a civ and begin on another. I went way overkill on my armada because I just wanted to check out the battle elements ( I likely could have split the force in two and taken the majority of civs out (playing settler level on quick speed). Didnt focus much on the other aspects once I figured out how to edit the game speed.

I agree with all who say 100 turns was a teaser. I go farther to say that the demo sorta sucked. The mod rules! And this mod is a great resource for newbie and veteran modders alike. But the demo is weak. Its good for a taste, but there can be no sense of completion. It gives you knowledge of everything (maybee) but gives you limited time and allows no saves. The taste and tease could have been preserved by providing us with abbreviated gameplay features which allows a game to be completed. But which does not include all aspects of the game. Just my 2 cents on that. With another half cent thrown in to say that I understand time is limited both for Jon and Firaxis and that expending resources on moddifying the game for the purpose of a Demo would be tough for such an ambitious expansion pack as BTS.

As a stand alone mod if the game does not have more tech tree and building aspects then the mod itself is very lineal. There isnt many gameplay options although there are some various routes to reach a couple ends. It is great fun nonetheless. But I cant help but wonder if the main motivation of this mod was to provide a foundation for future mods while still providing a game which is well worth playing. I see it as a fun and justified mini-game which is also a great resource to the modding community.

I just gotta say to Jon... This demo demonstrates the fun factor of your mod. If the full mod is the exactly the same as the demo, then I know that I will still gain many hours of enjoyment from it. It is well done and is a full game in its own right. Nothing I have said previous in this post discounts how cool this mod is! Two more days and I will be able to kick up the difficulty and play a Full game in all its glory! I cant wait... arggghhhh I prolley could have if I didnt have to read about other people enjoying the xp already lol. But I suppose its fair for other parts of the world to get a game first for a change and not have to got through what my countrymen now go through ;~)
