Hmmm strange errors... First thing I would recommend is making sure you have the latest Window's drivers from "Windows Update". Then uninstall and reinstall Civ2. Finally go to ww.ligos.com and download the latest Indeo video drivers and codecs. If you are still having problems after, which version of Civ2 are you using, classic (2.42), FW, MGE, or ToT? You're not applying anything extra to it before plaaying right?

This is not a Civ problem.

Comctl32.dll will be a file in your \winnt\system32 directory, and about 500 to 600KB in size.

What this does is handle requests by programs for "common controls" ( "comctrl"). This is things like popup boxes.

Evidently, a request is being made taht is not supported by your version. MS often updates this file. Be sure to install the latest update for XP from MS. I do not use XP because of reasons I post elsewhere, but if you match the right versions manually (not recommended if you are not adept at it), then you can just go to a driver site and download them.

The best thing is to install the latest Service Pack (or latest update, if the SP is current).

PS, To see if you have the files, use Explorer to search, beginning at your \winnt directory. They should be in your system32 subdirectory :).

I don't think any SP will contain them. Civ2 is an OLD application, originally designed for Win3.1. Those 2 files (and not comctl32.dll, but rather an ancient 16-bit predecessor of it) are 16-bit dll's used for common and display controls (or so the Internet tells me)...

You can download them here (I took them from this site: http://www.dictacomm.com/Win_Dll/98_1st/ ):
DCIMAN - http://www.dictacomm.com/win_dll/98_1st/dfiles/dciman.zip
COMMCTRL - http://www.dictacomm.com/win_dll/98_1st/cfiles/commctrl.zip

These are the versions of the dll's that came with Win98, 1st edition, so those should work.

"Install" them into your system directory, which would be \winnt\system32 as starlifter said
@ jefflc: To be safe, make sure you back up any existing file if you have to do an overwrite! Changing a library can have rather severe effects in other areas, and you wanna be able to restore the original files if there are any bad side effects of usign the Win98 files  .
