Compared to Master of Orion BOTH 1 & 2, Birth of the Federation is a real disappointment. The diplomacy part, where the game could have shined,is minimal. Also you spend too much time upgrading everything under the sun & not enough time building ships. The Klingons can really kick butt tho & the graphics are good.

I got this game because a person at school said it was good.

Althogh I am not a Star Trek fan I do enjoy playing Star Trek: Birth of the Federation. My favourite race is the Cardassians. I like them because the computer always seems to do rubbish controlling them but they are actually good and get a cool intelligence network!

My favourite part is killing the borg by ramming it which causes HUGE casualties.

Please tell me your favourite race!

I prefer the Romulans.

Extra Dilithum (If you can spare the 800 energy!!!)
Cloak gives a free attack, which is always nice.

Next would be Federation because of fairly strong ships and good favor among minor races.

The Klingons 3ed because they are pretty strong.

I've never played as Ferengi or Cardassians but I know the Cardassians have strong hull's and ships.

I HATE THE FERENGI!!!!! They are my mortal enemy!!!! You handicap them and they still take first place. They buy all the minor races away from you!! And they are ulgy!!!!

Anyway....you do have to spend too much time upgrading structures.

My second favourite race would be the Klingons!
They have a cloaked ship which is cool. Next would be the Federation because of their great diplomacy. Then the Romulans because the computer always seems to gang up on me when I am the Romulans.
Here is a problem with the game...
If you found a minor race by signing a friendship treaty with another major race you cannnot talk to them.
This gets worse because you can liberate them but you can still not talk to them.
Also if you declare war on a minor race you can never sign any treatys with them even after getting them to worshipful level on the diplomacy!
You can still have some great big battles like this one... 180 ships v 5 or 6

Bringing this topic back up the list (woh, December) here is my list of cool races.

1. Romulans: A. Great intelligence. B. The cloak. The cloak is a decisive part of my strategy. It allows my outnumbered battlecruisers to destroy larger fleets. And if it's one battlecruiser vs one command, my ship will always without hardly suffering any damage. C. The people are easy to keep happy.

2. Klingons: Later on, their heavy battlecruisers get the cloak, and the final version has a movespace of three. Their assault transports can also move two. The only drawback is that if I want some peace to build my army or expand elsewhere, I took a morale hit.

3. Card. A. Solid Intel. B. Ok ships.

4. Fed. I really do like playing them, honestly. I get a certain thrill commanding the Enterprise, and ships that look like it. And their ships are good. But, THE PEOPLE ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO KEEP HAPPY. I can usually get a lot of minor races, but when I want to go to war, I have to trick the enemy into declaring war on me, win a lot of fleet battles quickly, and try to take planets with a mininum of force, and be sure to get the morale boost when destroying an enemy empire. If I don't do it just right, my population will rebel, and even this strategy requires martial law. It can be done, but I do not like being so restricted.

5. Ferengi: Argh. A. THEIR SHIPS SUCK. 1. I cannot train them. 2. They are of inferior design. The only advantage is that they move fast, and thus a group of raiders can strike almost anywhere in the galaxy. Playing the ferengi requires large fleets and the bribing of minor races (and empires). And the little boost for ecnomic intelligence does not add much.
