Preview: OWNES I: The National Game

The Washington Smokes and the Richmond Rebels have agreed to a two year home and home spring training series with the first being in Richmond for the 1903 season.

I confirm the confirmation.

Anybody want to face the Baltimore Giants? ...I feel unwanted

But seriously though we are down for any preseason actividads.

The Americans will host 5 games in New York, at least one of them being against the Mohawks, one vs the Smokes and one being against the Half Moons.

We invite the Baltimore Giants to play in New York

We can play a 3 game series with the Mohawks if they so prefer

We're open for an exhibiton game on the 5th and 6th.

Agreed.

Agreed, as long as it isnt during my games against Boston.

Some quick player backgrounds

Alvie Shin and Malcolm McKay bare an unfortunate cross in sharing the former position of owner Ryan Lewis. Alvie suffers a constant stream of abuse on defense, but makes up for it on offense. As two of the most experienced players in terms of dealing with Lewis, they tend to be seen as leaders in helping players deal with his tirades. All in all, they have become far more laid back as a result of this, and try to help show players that when being sermonized, its better to drift off to a better place.

Eddie Kennedy is one of the longest tenured players on the Americans. He actually is one of the few players who actually has a positive relationship with Ryan Lewis. During a slump, Kennedy was hitting below .100, and many were calling for his benching. Instead, Ryan Lewis told him his ills came from his facial hair. Annoyed, but not wanting to upset the one man who would still sign his paychecks, he agreed and entered a surprising hit streak, becoming one of the best players in the game. While he still sees Ryan’s schemes as ridiculous, he does go along with them for the most part due to personal loyalty to the man who continued to believe(?) in him.

Ryan Mulloy is rather pompous and arrogant. While he tends to find Ryan Lewis annoying, Mulloy is able to leverage his position as the staff ace for added benefits. He loves being number one, and he uses that to build his own personal brand in New York. While privately he promotes himself as elite, in private he is acutely aware of his mediocrity and knows that his solid record is only the result of the efforts of solid hitting and defense. His new biggest worry in life is sensational rookie Abbot Lambeth and his potential to be a new ace for the team.

Abbot Lambeth is a quiet, religious man. He seems to take the sermons of Ryan Lewis seriously, and has shown dedication to becoming a good pitcher. When he speaks, its in a soft voice and every word he said is positive and encouraging. Most of the team has a positive opinion of Lambeth, aside from Ryan Mulloy.

Hey guys, just checking in to give y'all an update. I'm sorry I've sorta fallen off the face of the planet this past week. I absolutely want to make it clear that a) this NES is not dead and b) I'm neither procrastinating nor losing interest in running it. Quite the contrary, in fact. The reality is that I probably put the pre-thread up too early. I've spent the last week hard at work getting the simulation program together, and I'm mostly done. As it stands right now it's eclipsed the 11,000 line mark, and I'm currently in the process of going through it and making minor adjustments and proofreading. It should be very done, at which point I can finally start simulating the 1902 season and give you guys some actual, tangible statistics to play with (as well as test my baby and make sure everything is in working order).

In the interest of keeping you all interest, making up for my absence, and because I'm so goddamn excited about what I'm working on that I just absolutely have to tell somebody, I'm going to draw the curtain back and let you in on some parts of how this game is going to work. So here's a sneak-peek at how defense works:

Defense
For the purposes of this NES (and to make everything more excel-vba friendly), the defense in this game boils down to three metrics: O/C%, Fld%, and ARM.

O/C% is short for Offensive Conversion Percentage. This is a catch-all metric for overall defensive effectiveness. At its most general sense, this metric represents a player's ability to a) convert makeable outs into actual outs, and b) turn otherwise sure-hits into outs (spectacular plays). In this sense at its most basic O/C% represents a player's range and general ability to get to balls and put himself in a position to make a play. For catchers this metric also deals with positioning on plays at the plate (the ability for the catcher to apply the tag once the throw has been made). It's important to understand that O/C% relates specifically for the fielder's ability to get to the ball, it doesn't say anything about whether or not the player is able to field the ball cleanly.

Fld% should be a metric that everybody knows, and is really the only verifiably tangible one of the fielding metrics. The formula for Fld% is (PO+A)/(PO+A+E). Now it's important to remember that Fld% on its own can be a very deceptive statistic. A player can be a demonstrably poor fielder but still have a great Fld% (see: Derek Jeter). Within the perameters of the simulator, Fld% refers simply to a player's ability to not make an error on a play which he is able to make per O/C%. Fld% covers three facets of the defensive game: errors on fielding plays (the player gets to the ball but bobbles it), errors on throws (the player gets to the ball and fields it cleanly, but the ball sails over the 1B's head), and errors receiving (the SS makes a good throw to 1B but for whatever reason the 1B can't make the catch that he should have made).

ARM relates to (understandably) a player's arm. This, again, is an abstracted metric that refers to all manner of things. It isn't just arm strength, although in positions where that matters, it is related to that. It also deals with skill-based throwing actions, for example a 2B's ability to flip the ball to the SS, and the SS's ability to turn the double play in spite of the 1B runner's attempted spiking. In catchers ARM deals with a Catcher's ability to throw out basestealers. For OFers ARM is the OFer's ability to gun down runners.

Some notes about defense: the positions listed in the rosters post I made solely refer to that player's preferred (and best) position. Theoretically any player can play any position, but some positions are much harder than others to play, and moving players around will represent this from two standpoints: the relative difficulty of the position, and a player's familiarity with the position. Moving a 2B to SS wouldn't necessarily entail a falloff in ability. The positions are similar from a relative difficulty standpoint, but it may take some time for the 2B to acclimate himself to the position (although the time required to do this would be very quick based on the similarities between the positions and if the 2B had any previous experience with the position). If you instead wanted to, say, move your 1B to SS or CF, you may see a considerably starker falloff in defensive production, one that could potentially never be bridged through acclimation to the position. It's also important to remember that putting a player in his preferred position will impact his opinion of you the owner. If you put a player in a position he's not totally comfortable with, particularly if he's fussy or talented (the ostensible superstar of the team, say) could lead to some conflicts between you and the player. Although theoretically the reserve clause means the player is shackled to your team for life until you choose to release him, you still have to sign him to a contract every year and if he doesn't like you, he may find the money not worth the trouble, and may decide to "take a year off". (Sidebar, superstars like Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner were notorious for pulling stunts like that. You the owner hold many of the chips, but not all of them, to be sure).

Ok, enough aimless blathering. Here are the player ratings for every player in the game starting in the 1903 season. I'm not going to give you actual numbers at the risk of allowing people to game the system, but because defense is largely an eye-test Thing, and because we notably don't have eyes with which to observe these guys, I'm giving you all a general sense of overall defensive ability. The scale I'm using to portray these metrics is the standard Outstanding - Excellent - Good - Above Average - Average - Below Average - Poor - Awful - Abysmal. One final note - while all of these metrics refer specifically to a player's ability to play his position as listed, O/C% and ARM operate on a general scale (a "good" 2B and a "good" OF will have similar O/C% numbers), while Fld%'s ratings refer solely to a player's Fld% relative to other players at his position (a "good 2B" and a "good" OF may have vastly different actual Fld% numbers)

Oh, one more thing - with Fld%, try not to take things too too seriously. The differences are minute, and even the worst fielder by Fld only makes an error twice out of 10 opportunities. The difference between best and worst 2B is less than 10 points, and the average difference between ratings tends to be around 1 point.

Don't worry too much, those are just fielding abilities. Offence and pitching are not released yet.

Bump.

Any news on how everything's coming along? Not to be pushy, I'd just like to know when to check this forum again ;)

Yeah, I finished the code - 28,000 lines, well over 100,000 words and around 900 pages when pasted into word. I'm in the process of testing the individual components and trimming a loooot of fat.

Hey guys. Just chiming in to say that I'm working on this still. I've spent the better part of the last week preparing the OP for the main thread, which, optimistically, should be going up sometime early next week. To tide you over until then, here's a look at what the stats are going to look at.

Some information to get you started:

Personal worth is based on a couple things: the overview of your owner which you gave me, market size considerations, and general balancing.

Revenue is broken up into 3 numbers:
Raw gate revenue: this is how much money the team made for the year from the sale of tickets at the gate
Take-home gate revenue: The MAB operates on revenue sharing (as the MLB historically did at this time). The home team gives 20% of the gate revenue to the visiting team. This second number is the 80% you keep.
Net revenue: Your take-home gate revenue+revenue sharing income - this is how much money you actually make.

Market size is an indicator of how large your city is in relation to others and indicates the size of the fanbase you have to draw on. Numbers are arranged on a scale of 1-20.

Fan Interest is a measuring stick of how interested your fanbase is in your team. This number can change rather dramatically from month to month, and even game to game. It's most heavily affected by payroll size, quality of team (presence of superstars/attractions), fan loyalty, and team performance

Fan Loyalty is an indicator of (surprisingly) how committed your fanbase is to your team. This number helps dictate fan interest (higher loyalty means fans remain more interested longer, even in the face of flagging performance). Fan loyalty is a number which changes in the long term, and is dictated by performance trends (several years of consistently good performance), owner/team's relationship with the community, owner's reputation in dealing with players, particularly popular players. Jerking players around and forcing holdouts can have possible serious ramifications.

A player whose salary is listed as "-" indicates that player has yet to sign a contract with the team. This is the era of the reserve clause, which is to say teams which sign a player, own the rights to that player for the entirety of that player's career until the team decides to transfer those rights to another team. All contracts last 1 year and are renegotiated during the offseason.

Some common stats - such as RBI and SLG have been omitted. This is because either these statistics haven't been invented yet (in the case of SLG and SV) or are not yet in common usage (RBI). I have made exceptions when omitting the statistic would make talent evaluation in the absence of being able to physically see the player is impossible (which is why CS is included even though the statistic was not formally recorded until the 50s)
