Sorry but that thread where people frantically search for stock images to show that the associated artists have used photo references is just bs. They should really link that to conceptart.org or cghub and have people who are commercial artists comment on this. Not even tracing is against the law. The so-called "copies" are all different enough, not to mention that things like the great wall or the statue of David REQUIRE heavy referencing for accuracy.
My point is that since Firaxis had already broken many copyright laws (and got away with them), they should add the Motherland Calls, as it is better to represent Order than the Kremlin.
Well, the fact that they were going to have the statue, and then scrapped it, kind of implies someone actually came and told them to stop its inclusion.
The same presumably cannot be said for the owners of the stock images. It's probably not worth their bother to sue. Not everyone is litigious, especially about Google image search pictures that are plagiarised daily.
