G-Minor XXIX

ImageWhile the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << BEFORE playing!

Settings:
  • Victory Condition: Diplomacy (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
  • Difficulty: King
  • Map Size: Small
  • Map Type: Any
  • Speed: Epic
  • Leader: Any
  • Opponents: Any
  • Version: SV8 (1.0.1.511)
  • Date: 16th May to 1st June 2012
The earliest finish date wins, with score as a tiebreaker.

I'll rule out all AIs with a Diplomacy score above 5, then start fine-tuning.

I think at King you don't really have to worry about anyone beating you to a diplo victory.

I'm just trying to lessen the competition over the city states. It works, too! Now if I can just cut my victory time down by 200 turns.....

Edit: Well, I shaved 130 turns off, but I doubt 542 will even get on the board....well.....unless there are only 9 other people playing this challenge.

See, you learn something new here every day! It's a darn shame that there is not more participation in the HoF.

Edit: I managed to knock it down to 495t using only one city, so I may actually be able to break 450.

I'm trying a game as France on Pangea (just cuz I like playing France). I don't think this is going to be a stellar game, with one RA already broken, and cash really tight at t222 I'm not able to fund all five RAs.
I'd like to try another game, but I'm not a very fast player, and Epic speed is a pain for me.
What other civs and maps are people playing?

I'm playing Egypt on Tiny Islands. If I can beat the AIs to both the Hanging Gardens and Colossus, I make boatloads of money.

Ouch, I hate Tiny Islands! I much prefer One Big Island (Pangea)
Not to mention that it's usually slower to meet all the AIs.

any of the top tier civs have potential.
for map type, i think you need to pick one that allows you to meet all other civs early enough for RAs - pangea, inland sea, or great plains.

stuck! - can't build University

Any ideas how to get around this problem? sell Library, and rebuild it?

never mind.
I had closed the game with the Univeristy in the Queue, and when you reopen a saved game I guess you need to check to the Show Queue checkbox again.

Played a game last night. France, pangea. After quite a lot of rerolls, i found FoY who was supposed to be for a cs but an early culture ruin helped me to steal it . Nice land with rivers with 4 unique luxs(i could settle for 2 more cities but there was no rivers around so i stickied with 4), i settled 3 more cities and began RAs around turn 95. I finished at turn 293.

I made a lot of rerolls because i wanted a ''perfect'' start.

My goals :

Get 2 cities(2nd around turn 20) and 2 workers(1 bought and 1 from policy) for turn 30. Then 2 more cities for turn 50(10 turns per cities made) and 2 more workers(1 built from 2nd city and 1 stolen from a cs. 3 libraries + 1 GL for turn 70. Then NC. 1 ge for HG for my capital. Around turn 120 i was building universities and my cities were at 11-10-8-7.

The fun thing with france is that you don't need any early cultural cs(allied maritime instead).

Mongol diplomacy?

My first attempt on this gauntlet was with Harun. The game went well but I got bogged down by incense(18total with bazaars) and not enough of other luxs. I had an epic fail at the end and was two techs short in the middle of selling off all my buildings with no more RA's or gs's. I want to try again now with Mongolia. Does anyone know if you can win diplomacy with all or almost all puppeteer or annexed city states?

I was think you could build to chivalry/renaissance era, then with 3 allied city-states you could start picking off city-states that are either targeted by your allies (or potential allies) and other city-states that have no allies. As you begin building UN you should still have enough time to take the remaining 2-4 city states needed to win diplo.

I would think you just need to make sure that you can still get enough votes for the diplo win. I haven't eliminated many city states, but I think you may get to a point where you can't get a diplo win anymore because there aren't enough city states votes for you to get in order to beat all the Main civs voting against you. Or does the required number of votes to win go down as the number of city states left in the game goes down? I don't know how that works.

i think the number of votes does go down, but you'll still reach a point where you can't win unless you managed to liberate other civs.

Nice!!! I think I'll try that with China. Every time I have played this on a land map, I seem to have the bad luck of ending up close to Napoleon or Catherine or Darius. Napoleon is by far the worst. He launches attack after attack after attack until I go in and wipe him out entirely, in which case I can't get any RA's from him.
