Virtual Windows Machine
If I have a Mac and I want to run Civilization V on it, and I have the ability to run Windows virtually from the Mac, can I buy Civilization V for Windows and run it on the virtual machine. I assume I would be able to, but I just want to double check.

Civ5 is on SteamPlay
.If you buy the Windows version from Steam, you should get the Mac version for free. |

Could I install Civ 4 for Windows on the virtual desktop for large mods?

I'm not sure if it would work for either 4 or 5.
It really depends on what graphics card is simulated and how much RAM you can assign to the VMs. |

Well the Mac will be new and hasn't been bought yet, and the virtual machine will probably be Windows 7 or 8.

Doesn't answer the question
.But if I remember it correctly, then there are some users who run Civ4 via Wine on a Mac, so yeah, possible .

I know it doesn't, but I thought it might give you a basic idea.

After thinking about this some more, I came up with another question: Does Civ5 on Steam Play work with mods?

IIRC you cannot use the SteamWorkshop when you're on a Mac, but mods from other sources (like CFC) should work. For a more detailed explanation about what to do please see here.
