Religion was very important. I had a nice stream of GS to bulb in my push for Information Age. Also, I took Swords into Plowshares and Religious Community, which gave me four powerhouse cities. As for spies, I used them initially to steal tech. Amazing that England with their extra spy never caught me, and never gave me a warning to stop spying. After Globalization, I used them for WL votes.

The map was helpful, in that it pretty much kept Rome and America out of my land during the war. It was a hindrance, as it took a very long time to find all the civs. Anther way it helped was the amount of later game strategic resources the CS had. I ended the game with stockpiles of coal and aluminum, from CS. Something I very rarely have in my regular games.

Emperor is my everyday play level when I want to play and finish a game in one evening. So, it wasn't very difficult to keep on plan, despite the two DoWs.

I loved the immediate trade routes of the advanced start game, and being able to open rationalism turn one.I was surprised at the lack of AI expansion. I was disappointed in the AI play, even more lackluster than ancient start Emperor. Eventually my finish time came down to managing when I received free techs from Rationalism, Oxford and GS bulbing. I sure I could have done that better, and probably knocked off one WC period and finished maybe 20 turns faster. In all, I did enjoy the advanced start. I may play some more advanced starts to figure the best tech path and free tech sequence to get a faster finish.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Continuing from my Opening Action report. My Worlds Fair proposal passed and I won. Used the collected GW to finish out Freedom to the Treaty Organization tenet. Getting the Volunteer Army tenet ended the wars with Rome and America. They each offered up a city, but I took them for as much gold/GPT as I could instead. While that was happening Germany wiped out China.

The second WC I was able to pass World Religion by myself. That set me up for the end game. I mismanaged my sequencing of Oxford and GS bulbing. I missed triggering the WL vote before the second WC. The rest of the game was clicking end turn while monitoring my CS levels. Germany did throw a scare my way with completing Apollo Program with about 20 turns to WL vote, but he never built a spaceship part.

Not an eligible submission, but I'm proud to say I got it in 155 turns!

I had played through turn 220-something the first go-round, but was DOW'd by America and Rome at the same time. Lost my northern city (by the cotton) and Moscow was sure to fall soon.

I started a replay following the same basic strategy, and this time around, America declared war alone. Saw CS's take cities for the first time (for me)--Kiev took an English colony (I joined Rome because I knew my allies would buffer). Cahokia took New York as well.

I didn't use RA's, had only a couple DOFs. Used merchants to gain gold/favor. Only had 2 GSs all game (?) Couldn't generate them despite having all the right buildings/staffing them. Didn't think to experiment--do you split Great Person points within a city? I mean, do you lessen your chances of either if you staff a bank AND a university? I popped 5 merchants and only 2 scientists, and I had more specialists in science buildings.

- How did you use religion or spying to your advantage?
Stole a bunch of techs, allowing me to beeline. I converted Rome and America as well as several CSs to my religion, got World Religion without problem.

- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?
It made it harder, naturally, to find all the CSs. Started out Astronomy and sent pikes in all directions, which left me without units to do barb quests on my continent.

- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?
I have recently started playing "up", so it made me very conscious of what I was doing.

- What did you think of an advanced start?
Love it.

- Did the advanced start make the game easier, or harder?
It made the beginning much easier.

- Did you enjoy playing an advanced start game?
First time in Civ 5. I'll do it more, for sure.

:thanx: for following the rules. :goodjob:

And nice work on your game. Submission next time, I hope. :)

replayed this one using a different strategy.. this time i started with 2 in tradition for free culture buildings and 2 in liberty for free worker.. the next policy came quickly so i chose liberty production.. the worker policy was crucial for developing land tiles quickly to kick start economy.. sold early horses and traded luxuries for happiness..

focused early production on libraries, NC, universities, aqueducts to push through astro asap and get borubador to dovetail with my 100g per city religion.. got 2 scouts in the water to go west as i didnt have a coastal city yet and they found the other civs just as i researched printing press.. also sent a pike east at the same time where he met poland and killed a camp for the food CSs.. (previous map knowledge was obviously key)..

next focus was on great scientist generation.. founded a city on the river south of cap.. chopped library, university, and garden.. built leaning tower and national epic and porcelain tower in cap and staffed science slots as soon as i exhausted the 3 food tiles..

then the focus was getting enough gold to be able to afford both public schools and keep the culture CSs at a minimum of friends to get some policies in rationalism asap.. built all gold buildings for rest of game in sats and built TPs on the poor plains tiles which came in handy later on..

leveled up first spy in cap then sent him to washington where he could only steal gunpowder and navigation before i had outpaced him.. next spies went to the culture CSs..

religion was key to buying science buildings.. rush bought an aqueduct in second city, all public schools and all research labs.. picked 100g per city, swords into plowshares, enhance with production and religious texts..

first world counsel vote i was able to push thru sciences funding.. america and germany helped.. second vote i tried to get religion passed but rome flipped an allied CS on the vote turn and i lost that vote 28-26.. rome built forbidden palace..

chose freedom for ideology which allowed me to staff all specialist slots and work as many gold tiles as possible without starving too badly.. starting bulbing scientists to reach plastics.

i thought i might have problems with enemy spies in the final turns so i sold my public schools and research labs to generate insurance gold..

in the end it finished up on turn 299.. 114 turns.

An interesting game, for sure. Had I completed the Tradition tree, I wouldn't have ended with 5000 faith. I had nothing to use it on! Oh well.

never went to war

Spoiler :
Ok so funny that victory is on turn 350 but I guess that is really 165 as it said when I uploaded the game file. Anyway I played a pretty dull boring game, I think it would of been faster to warmonger, not really sure. I never looked at any of the settings or map before I started. I don't understand why practice games are needed, one shot one kill, thats my style anyway. I wanted to go coastal for the cargo ships so I said screw it Im gonna build my cap right ontop of the iron and that's what I did. I was suprised to see all the culture at the start lol. I took tradition and the three choices down the middle. I never played a game on this level or at starting in this era so I went Printing Press first to build Leaning Tower. Scouted the map as fast as possible with my units and decided to get into Religion fast since Mt sinai was close. I built my second city on the tundra coast that had Sinai in range and I chose +4 faith for my panth. So I was first to religion and chose tithe,pagodas,+2 faith from wonders, and religious texts. I hard built workshops in both of my cities and after that I built all 4 cargo ships, two for food and two for gold. I chose GE for GP from pisa and built borobudur. I went onto Architecture next for PT. I decided to just bulb all scientist right away since I didn't think academies would come into play. I focused on all science buildings asap, production building next, gold building after that. My game was real peacefull I got astronomy after arch and found all the civs and cs's. I chose order first and made it the world ideology, next I made my religion dominant. Worlds Fair after that and I bulbed a mass of GAs after winning it. I went 6 deep into Order for the 2 free GPs. Other wonders I built were Cristo, Kremlin, Sydney Opera House, Eiffel Tower, Hubble and CN Tower.

I won on the first WL vote by buying up most of the CS's but I actually paid two other Civ's for 8 votes ( only needed 6 ). I never seen that before but I really only every play this game on deity since I bought it a few years ago. ( Picture #2 )

Anyway game was strange because I only ever play from Ancient era so I was a bit lost in what to do but it was a really easy win but I think that I took way too many turns. I look forward to seeing the fastest turn time and reading about all of your games! Lastly my policies were 3 deep into tradition, full Ration, Full Patronage and 6 deep into Order. ( I posted a quick note and stats on After Action Thread )

This level and game reminds me of how I used to play GK pre patch. I agree with the comment I seen that 165 turns seems like it is too long and maybe warmongering will speed things up. I still can't believe that bribing two civs to vote for me as world leader worked, they should not vote for you to end the game lol!! Another note I sold all my units and some buildings to get enough gold to buy that last cs that I needed although I did win the vote by 42 instead of 40. Oh and I never had control of the WC so that gave me the "Dark Horse" Achievement!

While I've played quite a few gotm's before, this is my first submission. The advanced start made me test out the settings on a couple similar maps first. I tried it with civs like Mongolia and Austria and Venice (as AIs). With those AIs, you are forced to go to war. The advanced start also allowed me to test out different social policies. I almost always go full tradition from ancient start. I found that 3 coastal cities seemed to work best (free lighthouse is very nice). 3 cities allows you to use all your trading routes for food and get exploration for +3 hammer +3 happiness policies. 3 cities seemed to also be the limit for happiness management and worked nicely for having one cultural national wonder per city. Later on you can switch the trade routes to external ones, which net a lot of gold (~25/route).
Back to the current game. I saw the coast to the south, so I figured that would be one city with the silk and a couple fish. I was pleasantly surprised to find there were actually 5 fish in range. My second city went next to the whales and fish to the east. Not an amazing spot, but since it was coastal, it will work. By the time the settler for my 3rd city was ready (~13 turns to build), I had found the nice spot to the west on the coast, which included Mt Sinai in the borders. Sadly, by the time I had enough money to buy the tile, 4 religions had been founded, and I missed founding a religion by a few turns.
I had hoped the AI would meet everyone and found the world congress for me, but no such luck. ~60 turns into the game I had units wandering the ocean until I finally found Germany and China. I was already in the industrial era, so the first congress was scheduled for 25 turns later. I bulbed 3 scientists for ~2700 each and then used oxford to beeline satellites just before the first congress. This set the first world leader vote for 15 turns later (I don't actually know how the timing works, but it seems to have worked out well for me). I then switched to gold focus and started selling buildings every turn. Had plenty of money to get all the CS's allied (also built Forbidden Palace earlier), so I DOWed all the AI's the turn before the vote to be safe.
While my time seems to be fairly fast, I'm quite sure it could be done at least 10 turns earlier. I could have sent scouts into the ocean earlier and I accidentally made a GE, which could have been a 4th GS.

I managed the win on turn 338 so that's 153 turns. However, this was on a replay after I screwed up big time on the first try, so I'm not submitting.

On this replay I went with Liberty, patronage, Freedom and right side of Commerce.

Moscow on the coastal river because that allowed quick access around the ice. The 2nd city on the coastal tundra to the west for the natural wonder, 3rd city on the coastal tundra to the east for the whales and a fairly late 4th city on the desert north of Moscow to put the coastal cotton and the wheat next to the other cotton both in the 3rd ring.

I didn't decide to put the 4th city until Washington sent a settler in that direction.

In the end I had every city state allied, a diplomat in every capital for the globalization bonus, Forbidden Palace, world religion and world ideology for a total of 50 votes, but only needed 40 for the win.

Religion was God of the Sea, Tithe, Pagodas, Mosques and Religious Texts. The 5th religion was never founded. I used Hagia Sophia to enhance and Borbodour to spread to my 2nd & 3rd cities and to Rome.

Overshot the 100 turn target by a bit... oh well
I still have not figured out how the number of turns to world leader is determined. I had to wait 20 turns from information era to vote, that's quite a lot of wasted turns

I won in 113 turn (298 in game) by eliminating all but one civs in atomic era.
As the results shown information era peaceful wins were faster (especially in real time :)) but I really enjoyed advanced era start (more interesting game and can learn sth new) :)

I use gunboat diplomacy. Not as strong with ancient era start. I made hard work to have enough military to influence military states.
I played for fun, went to get all civs but one with aircrafts. When I realized after second WC and autocracy voted, I can win in first world leader election. Lucky early win. :D
England (with to polar cities), China, Poland and Germany are alive. I plan to raze Germany because he built four spaceship parts. Too late, Bismark.

4 cities, Full Tradition, secularism, Autocraty gunboat + total war, and at the end Patronage.

Oxford for Dynamite. I didn't bored to build research labs in all cities.

Religion : Tithe + Pagodas + Religion Community.

Two engineers with faith for Prora and Neuschwanstein (two CS quests in late game).

Spies for tech at first, then rigged election and with globalization diplomat for WC votes.

Hard to play on Emperor after one week on settler. :D

PP should have been 2nd tech instead 4th to shave off few turns - but who can know ...
4 city 4 liberty into Rati - pretty straightforward game. Ais been weak all game - no competition for CS. had 45 of 40 needed votes in end.

Unable to finish in time. Played to turn 345 (160). CS allies were only just starting to snowball. Tough game for quests.

Turn 149 victory.

Continuing from the other thread :

LATE GAME / VICTORY

Picking authocracy (again just for an achievement) got me some heat with everyone, except rome who took the same. Bismak seemed at the point of attacking when i bribed him to war china... that distracted him just long enough, and he ended up completely eliminating china from the game. Can't complain. :)

I ended up with 4 points into tradition, patronage maxed, 2 into exploration, 1 into commerce, 2 into rationalism, and 3 points into autocracy. If i had to do it all over again, i might focus more on maxing rationalism earlier so i can buy scientists with faith, but i was making a lot of money from tithe so i am not sure which is optimal, the extra science or the awesome gold. 435 gold per turn at the end, 55 of it from religion (quite a bit of trade posts though), but early on the gold from religion was a bigger chunk or my income. So there is probably an optimal moment to stop making missionaries and keep faith for scientists. So i should do less points into patronage, and more into rationalism, earlier.

I allied all city states in turn 319, had globalization (diplomats give you a vote) about 5-10 turns before that. I have more than enough votes to win, just waiting for the first world leader vote. Didn't even need the diplomats in fact, ended up with 47 votes vs the 40 needed. 5 extra votes from the diplomats, and 2 extra from passing my ideology as world ideology in the united nations. Note that bismark eliminated china (what's the impact on number of votes needed?), and i had +2 voices from an early forbidden palace.

Never have been in a war. Having a look at demographics, i ended up #1 in everything, except #2 on land, and #3 on soldiers. (most of them gifts from military city states.) I think i might need to start playing on immortal now. Even if i can tell, the AI had more trouble adjusting to this late start.

Voted world leader on turn 334. Really turn 149, first vote.

What i could have done better :
- More focus on great people generation, i didn't build a single garden, great people generation wonders late or never built.
- Earlier economic buildings, i had markets but lagged behind on making more advanced eco buildings.
- Better timing with oxford, i didn't use it until the atomic era, research times were so low that i felt it was a waste to use it earlier. Research was good, but could have been better by maxing rationalism first and being faster with buildings.
- Voting religion instead of ideology for more votes, america, france, and rome all had my religion. Was too cautious vs easy AI.
- Should have made even faster religion (maybe settling near sinai right away, skipping coast), i missed the science from converting cities belief, it could have made a huge difference since i was spamming missionaries anyway.

QUESTIONS

- How did you use religion or spying to your advantage?

Religion made my neighbors peaceful early, made money from tithe. Spies went right away to city states then half of them to stealing. (I assumed all AI started with same techs as me so no point stealing right away.)

- Did the map type help or hinder victory and how?

With the advanced start and going astronomy first it didn't really make it harder, found all other civs pretty fast using my starting units.

- How did the difficulty level affect your game decisions?

It is my usual difficulty level so i felt very comfortable. (Played as usual.)

- What did you think of an advanced start?

Very nice, i always like shorter games (IRL), seems like a good way to practice some late game strategies without dragging on from ancient. Would happily play this mode again in future TSGs. :)

- Did the advanced start make the game easier, or harder?

Mush easier to focus and synergise, and the AI didn't seem to adapt well, i felt like i was playing an easier difficulty level than emperor.

- Did you enjoy playing an advanced start game?

Yes, definitely. :)
