SGOTM 15 - Misfit Gypsy Nuts

I played 4 turns.

Everything was good until Genghisgawa declared war on us. Now there is a full scale global war going on.

@aj, I got off the spreadsheet some, the cities are still in order, I just sped them all up a bit so I could try to get more artists in Delhi to better the odds there.

I am going to follow the spreadsheet and suggestions and play some turns now.

Good Luck Ronnie1 :)

Haha cross posted but in a way thats brilliant for us as it puts Liz v GK!!!!! Bad news of course might delay us a bit.

The only other semi-bad news is that I traded away our stone for gpt. I have not started a Castle yet in Kyoto, it is a 5 turn build without the stone. Genghis has 7 Cuirassirs in his stack, and a total of 27 units. 3 Mace/4 Keshik/1 LB/1 SW/1 Axe/3 Pike/ 5 Cats/ 2 Trebs

So I am looking at the the best way to handle Genghis' stack.

Again we have to 2 options of hiding behind the walls and possibly castle in 5 turns OR attacking in the open. His stack is as you can see is only 3 turns from being able to attack without bombarding and they will pillage our farm on the way in more than likely.

We could manage the Castle into a 4 turn build if we emphasize hammers which requires firing some artists in favor of citizens.

The biggest difference I see this time is that the Cuirassiers being gunpowder units completely negate the defensive bonus of the Walls and Castle.

I would love to attack that stack now with Pikes, unfortunately we don't have any yet.

Does anyone have time to sim some battle outcomes?

Well I think were safe to move some units from Palit area to Kyoto but not to weaken to much because of HC/Mansa. Do also think we should look to attack with cats this time once they get adjacent to the city. No siege (well very little) and our defences shouldn't be any problem this time... :) Of course if a massive stack is right behind this one then might be a bit different..

I would personally play on a little bit as there's not much we need to do this time. :)

Our cultural defences should be at 80%? so no real need to worry about castles now. It would just slow down his siege.

As mentioned the problem is our lands being pillaged. Otoh with Liz declaring on him perhaps if were very very lucky his stack will go home instead?

Other thoughts as the buffy log seems a bit dodgy. Says Shaka declared on us!!!

Anyway one plus is Hammie is on our side v GK and at war with Hattie so hopefully he'll send cuirassiers to Kyoto area?

I wouldn't count on that. The AI sucks completely as a war ally.

When is the next AP resolution?

Totally agree on that. Given up telling the AI to attack a city a long time ago...

Good chance if he sends forces through our lands he will have to go through Kyoto and the AP vote is ineffective as GK isn't hindu (or at least he wasn't) and don't want to stop Liz's war.

We are only at war with Genghis, see screen shots.

Units in Kyoto which could be upgraded...
  1. 6 Spearman costs 570 gold to upgrade to Pikemen
  2. 1 Archer cost 95 gold to upgrade to Longbow OR 125 gold to upgrade to Crossbow
  3. 5 Axemen cost 625 gold to upgrade to Macemen
There is a 6th Axeman Super Medic not included as an upgrade.

We have 861 gold in the Treasury now, so we could upgrade the Spears & Archer now if we wanted. If we turned all the sliders to 0%, we'd be making +94 gold/turn, and should be able to upgrade the 5 Axes in five turns.

Not sure what turning all the sliders to 0% for 5 turns would do to our finish date. Looking at the Culture graph of the P&R page, Team FE has been at 1740 AD for a while now, so that may be the date we have to beat for a Culture Victory.

Also, Liz is willing to trade Gunpowder, we could see what she wants for that; maybe upgrade the Spears & Archer before asking.

EDIT: x-post with C63 & Sleepless. Next AP vote in 8 turns, but Sleepless is correct, Genghis is not a member.

I don't see any need to upgrade the troops in Kyoto. As I've mentioned numerous times ;) though to move the LBs from Osaka/Tokyo to Kyoto. Have the fw's ready to build improvements as soon as we have dealt with the stack but don't think we should move out in the field. Bear in mind we can hit the stack with cats from Kyoto and retreat back inside if we win. If we had a lot more maces would be inclined to attack after collateral cat damage but we don't so. :)

Holy moly, things are really complicated now!

It is far more important for us to maintain our Artist allocations than it is to keep the slider high (Delhi going legendary before Kyoto and all that). So, I think we use our cash to at least upgrade the spears. Pikes will be our best defence vs Cuirassiers, which are the most threatening unit in that stack.

I think we play it the same as we did vs Hatty - don't attack with the cats, but instead let them soak up some of Genghi's siege collateral damage. Probably also wise to move the GG out of the city so that it can't be targeted and killed.

Ron - why is Kyoto working so many mines? Is this a change that you only just made this turn? As far as our artist production is concerned, I think we should keep them full steam ahead.

If Genghis is not a member of the AP, we can get all AP members to declare war on him. This would put Hatty against him, preventing him sending troops our way.

Edit: Sleepless is right about moving the LBs from Tokyo and Osaka. With the culture slider where it is, we don't strictly need garrisons in those cities.

@aj, I got off the spreadsheet some, the cities are still in order, I just sped them all up a bit so I could try to get more artists in Delhi to better the odds there.
Comparing the F1 screenshot to the GPP spreadsheet, most cities are as I'd expected them to be, except for Delhi, Tokyo and Kyoto. They all seemed to be below what I was expecting.

I've updated it to where it looks like we are.

From this turn, Tokyo must assign every man, woman and child as an artist. For a pop 8 city, I expect it will run 9 artists this turn, 8 artists the next, and at least 6 artists after that. Failing this would then needlessly slow Delhi down.

Kyoto should get back up to 8 artists. Delhi up to 5.

Looking at the Culture graph of the P&R page, Team FE has been at 1740 AD for a while now, so that may be the date we have to beat for a Culture Victory.
I'm much more ambitious than that. Chatter in the maintenance thread suggests that there are other teams who haven't finished. If we improve our date by any we might be able to beat one or two of the war mongering teams.

Assuming the war mongerers do boost their score towards the end, we might stand a chance of winning the "most efficient victory" wooden spoon :) Though Kakumeika are looking strong for this one, assuming whatever it is they are scheming works out. (Or already has worked out! :crazyeye:)

NB: I expect us to win circa 1640 AD.

Edit: We really do need to keep up the pace though. Ron - do you feel confident to play out the entire Genghi situation? I'm sorry if I come across as some micromanagement freak. Honestly, you can disregard all the spreadsheets if you like. It's more important that we get through these war declaration challenges intact, so if you feel a quick build of a caste is more important than artists then I'm totally ok with that. More importantly, that we play the next 30 turns within the next 11 days.

Sorry about that sleepless, I know I read it, but now I am VERY CLEAR!

aj, can you get on messenger please, also, anyone else that can chat through windows live messenger would be great to work out a few things real quickly!

Interesting developments! Both in the game and the fact that a few teams are saying they might not finish!

Think we have the defenses to withstand Genghis, especially as he will be pre-occupied by Liz hopefully.

Agree with aj that trying to finish at our desired date is the main priority. Move the extra defenders from Tokyo and Osaka and keep up with the artists. I think upgrading the spears to pikes is worthwhile though.

I can't remember my live messenger password or my hotmail account has expired (haven't used it for years). Don't have access to the game though.

More later, gotta run!

We were on MSN as Ron was playing, here's the MSN log
Spoiler :
Ron Sebold says
I am playing now
spears upgraded
Adrian Jongenelen says
oh yay
Ron Sebold says
exploring worker found 1 mace and 1 pike way behind
Adrian Jongenelen says
actually, with another mace and 2 longbows arriving, we will have 20 quality defenders
Ron Sebold says
5 and 4 turns respectively from our borders
Adrian Jongenelen says
cool, they won't make any difference
I think have Kyoto slow build longbows.
Ron Sebold says
no...Kyoto still building Uni!
Liz has a giant stack in north hatty lands that will clean up any more GK units
Adrian Jongenelen says
haha, sweet
Ron Sebold says
i am chopping the pre chopped forests around Delhi for more units
Adrian Jongenelen says
fair enough.
Ron Sebold says
SWEET! Ended turn and GK units headed for HATTY!
Adrian Jongenelen says
haha. Gold!
I guess revert to peace-time policies and play out the turnset as originally planned
Ron Sebold says
yes...no more changes for sure
wish I had waited to upgrade the spears
Adrian Jongenelen says
Oh well.
maybe the spears are what frightened him off
Ron Sebold says
lol
no
hatty moved a stack onto our farm
he went for the city she just ekmptied
Adrian Jongenelen says
hatty is going for Hammu?
Ron Sebold says
no
Adrian Jongenelen says
we aren't at war with her are we?
Ron Sebold says
she is at war with GK also
Adrian Jongenelen says
oh, is she now excellent
Ron Sebold says
no sorry
GK is at war with us/liz/shaka
hatty is at war with Hammy
very confusing looking at 8 Toku's
Liz is at war with shaka/GK/Cyrus
only Capac/Musa are not at war with someone
Adrian Jongenelen says
right, so perhaps Hatty is having a go at Hammu. Genghi has just decided to retreat to defend himself from Liz possibly
Ron Sebold says
yes and yes
Adrian Jongenelen says
When AP vote comes around, we might be able to get Hatty to declare on Genghi. That would be excellent
Ron Sebold says
both hammy and hatty are moving troops towards each other
i wish I had a visibilty horse for better recon potential!
Adrian Jongenelen says
oh really? What are we, Belgium?
Ron Sebold says
lol
Adrian Jongenelen says
I assume these stacks aren't interfering with our populace working tiles?
Ron Sebold says
no
hammy is in our lands to the north
we have OB with both, so no worries
Adrian Jongenelen says
biggest concern I guess is one of them requesting us to join in the war vs the other. We have only one possible answer to that
played any more turns? Genghis still withdrawing?
Ron Sebold says
GK went into hatties city and is just sitting there
will NOT join any wars
Adrian Jongenelen says
Hmmm... GK loitering sounds dangerous. Keep the troops of Patal and Delhi flowing for a while. Kyoto can finish its University and then get back to longbows.
Ron Sebold says
Hammy just asked us to cancel deals with Hatty
Adrian Jongenelen says
ummm................. I think no
Ron Sebold says
lol
I think not
let them beat each other up while we watch

Adrian Jongenelen says
I don't think I've ever seen two AI stacks meet out in the field...
what's the bet they bypass eachother completely and just keep on truckin to the other side.
The once one of them thinks the threat is bad enough, they'll send their troops back home to defend.
So starting a long war oscillating back and forth through our lands
Ron Sebold says
Mongols are in the far north
east a bit
Capac is straight east of Hatty acroos the water
Adrian Jongenelen says
How are Tokyo and Delhi going?
Ron Sebold says
Tokyo just popped
Delhi in 3 turns now
Adrian Jongenelen says
Great. Tokyo can switch to merchants now
and generally work whatever tiles maximise Gold
Ron Sebold says
Delhi will starve for 2 turns to maximize artist %
Adrian Jongenelen says
but not lose Pop I hope?
Ron Sebold says
oh no
Adrian Jongenelen says
sounds good
Ron Sebold says
7 artists for 2 turns now
pops in 2
up to 61%
GK moving back towards us
Adrian Jongenelen says
same size stack? did we have extra maces/longbows arrive in Kyoto?
Ron Sebold says
Yes and Yes
2 LB
1 mace
1 pike coming
1 cat coming
Satsuma revolts IBT
Adrian Jongenelen says
hi Griff
Ron Sebold says
Tokyo is now stagnant running 4 merchants
hi griff

Tom Griffith has been added to the conversation.

Ron Sebold says
I want to sell EDU to Hatty for 320 gold
any reason not to?
Adrian Jongenelen says
I can't think of any... gets her closer to Liberalism which couldn't hurt
Tom Griffith says
Hi Ron. EDU is on the way to Liberalism, so IMO OK
Ron Sebold says
Done...got us to cautious also
how many more artisits do we need from Delhi?
I can get it to 1 turn without losing any pop
Adrian Jongenelen says
depends on if this next one is an artist...
if the next is an artist, then we might not need any more
Ron Sebold says
would odds change
Adrian Jongenelen says
if you can add without losing pop, then might as well
Ron Sebold says
better with 12 artists for 1 turn
or 7 for 2 turns
probably 7 for 2 right
Adrian Jongenelen says
it's pretty marginal. I wouldn't care too much
it's worth about 21/1800 = 1.1%
Ron Sebold says
i'm going 7-2 to stay above 1/2 full food bar
Prinitng Press learned
Gunpowder next?
Tom Griffith says
Have you tried to get Gunpowder from Liz?
Ron Sebold says
We have nothing to trade and she won't gift it
Tom Griffith says
If the War is still going, might as well get Gunpowder
Ron Sebold says
that was my thinking
Tom Griffith says
What turn is it?
Adrian Jongenelen says
Yes, I think GP next
PP won't make any difference to our victory date
Tom Griffith says
PP should help the Villages/Twons around Delhi
Towns
Adrian Jongenelen says
sure, but helping Delhi any more doesn't help uor overall game
Tom Griffith says
but it helps the Treasury some as well
Ron Sebold says
ARTIST in Delhi!!!
Adrian Jongenelen says
yes, I suppose. In any case, did you say we already learned PP?
artist, Great!
Ron Sebold says
yes PP is in
GP 2 turns
Adrian Jongenelen says
any word on GK stack?
next GArtist challenge, make sure Bombay beats Kyoto
Ron Sebold says
GK moved and pillaged copper IBT
Bombay is 8 turns Kyoto is 9
Adrian Jongenelen says
I assume we weren't working that tile anyway... Hmmm... GK loitering will eventually intrude on Kyoto's GP production
how long before AP vote that might get Hatty to declare on GK?
Ron Sebold says
2 turns
Crap...game crashed
Adrian Jongenelen says
hah! mid-turn? IBT?
Ron Sebold says
ibt
right when i ended turn actually
Adrian Jongenelen says
hmmm. Guess you'll have to replay from autosave. And not chat to us so much
replay as you did, then upload save. Mailing autosave to AlanH and Neilmeister
Ron Sebold says
yea PM'ing AlanH now
we have this chat to record if there are any questions also
Adrian Jongenelen says
you should replay the turn while everything is fresh in your mind
Ron Sebold says
Replayed...ended turn and Liz's stack wiped out GK IBT!
Adrian Jongenelen says
that's unbelievable! Did you save before end turn?
Ron Sebold says
yes
and after!
Tom Griffith says
is GK dead?
Ron Sebold says
the troops that were in our territory yes
not the civ
Tom Griffith says
OK, he's way up to the NE, so may take a while to get more troops down to us
Adrian Jongenelen says
sounds like now is a good time to stop, and wait for a reply from Alan or Neil
Ron Sebold says
yep

To summarise:

Ron upgraded the spears.
GK turned his stack around for a while.
Tokyo produced a GArtist before Delhi, then went to assigning merchants.
Hammu and Hatty started sending troops towards eachother, which look like they'll do battle in our lands.
GK pillaged Kyoto's copper that wasn't being worked anyway.

After so much alt-tabbing in and out of the game, the game crashed just after an end-turn

Ron reloaded the autosave, and played that one turn again (not much to do, and no RNG involved I don't think).

After replaying that end-turn, Liz comes along and wipes out GK's stack!
