In Titan's Shadow

The Narazh
Starting Location: As per Map. Start of the first tributary of the main river, down towards the Senarai in the west and touching the Zhunzh in the north.

Society: Narazh society is largely patriarchal. Familial units are important and like their neighbours have a Family in charge that derives from the main patrilineal line of descent and then associated satellite families etc.

Several Large cities dominate, placed along the river for easy access to water, they offer protection to outlying towns/villages/homesteads. Power resides in councils of wealthy landowners and water merchant families that sell access to water via underground reservoirs/qanats, that they have constructed/improved, this is used to support the large populations of the cities. Several aqueducts that bring water from natural springs into the cities do exit, although these are associated with only the very wealthiest and largest of cities.

Lineage: Mostly Patrilinear, although descent through a female line is accepted at times (Modern influences from the Zhunzh, Adazh? Simply money buying power?).

Food: Barley and Wheat are common. Citrus and Macademia Orchards. Sheep, goat, waterfowl provide meat (and milk where appropriate!). Cattle are mostly beasts of burden, but beef exists in the diet especially to the east near the Zhunzh where cattle is relatively more common.

Religion(s): The Narazh pantheon is associated very strongly with the heavens above. Namely, the Sun and Titan are representations of the two most powerful figures in the pantheon, brothers in fact. The Sun God, Firr is a bringer of light, growth and warmth. Titan, Shaon, is a bringer of the cold, the dark and deception. In the beginning the brothers fought Firr over a woman [potentially one of the other planets that are in the solar system, their sightings are of course incredibly rare]. Firr gained the woman but in a jealous rage Shaon swore vengeance. Firr wept and from these tears the minor gods were born [moons of Titan], plus of course the life giving waters on the planet.

The twice yearly eclipses represent Shaon attacking Firr, resulting in a period of fervent prayer. The most solemn of vows are made in this time, families make important alliances/marriages during this period. Oaths and other promises via blood pacts the betrayal of which are especially heinous. After Firr is victorious celebratory feasts are held.

The moons represent various gods, which themselves have avatars on earth that are honoured with specific rites (i.e. goat/sheep prior to slaughter and eating will have a specific prayer etc, various birds of prey are prayed too for a good hunt etc).

Language(s): Related to the Meli/Senarai languages/writing with some appropriate borrowing of Zhunzh words and sometimes even sentence structure.

Origins:

Mankind are children of light and water, they were planted from the heavens and grown. The Narazh believe to have fled from across the mountains.

Economic Base: Agriculture, nascent mining (water merchants constructing stuff sometimes segue into mining). Lots of trading down river and some with the Zhunzh (some variety in the diet is needed/wanted!).

The Tale of the King Kelshantar

The god who has seen everything, I will make known to the lands. I will teach the people about him who experienced all things, glorious and sorrowful alike in the dawn of days. I shall recount the tale of Kelshantar, sacred avatar of the god, King of the people and master of the way. For the Most August Lord granted him the totality of knowledge. He beheld the Secret things, and discovered the Hidden places, He brought forth the secrets of the floods and of the sand unto the people, and went forth across the Gashwetalon, pushing himself even unto death to behold with his own eyes the place of origin, returning again across the sands victorious unto the people. His exploits have been carved upon the walls of the great temple which sits beside the mother of waters. It is known that by His hand was built the great wall of the city of the people, which is beyond compare to any in the world. The enclosure of the holy sanctuary by the mother of waters too was raised up by his command in wrought stone. Behold it gleams like copper and shines with the glint of gold and glimmers with precious stones.

Ascend o scion of the people unto to the holy gate of the temple, and go up upon the city wall. Is not it wrought of the finest stone even unto its core and unto its very foundation. Verily did not Truth the font of all understanding lay out its plan and did not substance render it immovable by the rushing waters of the tempest? Behold then the city of the people, its palm gardens and the fields of grain, and know that all was wrought by his august command. For the god Kelshantar. Supreme King, divine master over princes and chiefs and lordly in countenance built these things. He is the hero, born of Senarasan, the great lion who conquers all foes. He rides forth in kingly chariot before his host, the great leader who smites his foes, He is the great protector of his people, and bulwark against the great flood which shatters even great walls of stone and harkens unto the father of darkness.

He is the avatar of the Lord of Ways, the spirit of the god dwells within him which descends from upon high to grace Man. It is he who is the living image of the god who in the beginning who opened the gate of the heavens and beheld the gaze of the High one who wrought man in the place of origin, and sent them hither across the vastness of the world. It was Kelshantar who crossed the high mountains and the great salt water, the vast seas, to the rising sun. It was he who crossed the desert by his own strength and found the lands of origin. It was he who in the beginning raised up the people and brought all the princes to heel. All these things and more did he do in the beginning of days.

Amongst the Kings works, there came forth in these the beginning of days from across the high mountains a malevolent spirit, a demon of destruction might and strong beyond compare. It in great wrath tore down the villages and devoured the people, it wallowed in pools of blood and fed on the flesh of men.Women wailed in lamentation and the men wept over their fallen sons. The earth trembled and the sky heaved with tempests and with fire. The land was laid waste and rendered devoid of people. The elders of the land by the high mountains came forth in council and hearing of the glory of the King spoke unto the council saying "there lives by the great river a certain Kelshantar,who's strength is beyond compare. Let us send a messenger unto him, and with him send the harlot Bashaba and gifts of fine wool and precious stones. Let him tell Kelshantar of the great demon which afflicts our land and give unto him these gifts and he shall surely come to cast out our enemy"

The council of elders heeded the wise chiefs advice, and so they sent forth a hunter swift of foot across the sands. They sent him unto the land by the river in which dwelt the divine avatar, King Kelshantar. He who was greatest amongst men and Lordly ruler of the people of Senar. Coming upon the dwelling place of the people the hunter made prostrations before the King, And bowing again showed unto him his gifts, of precious stones and the harlot Bashaba and declared to Kelshantar. "There is a certain demon, great and terrible, which has descended upon our clan from beyond the mountains. His strength is as a great tempest and his coming is marked with pools of blood and the lamentations of women. He continually goes hither and thither across the mountains, striking in the shadow of the titan in the days of darkness and in the evenings twilight. We bid you, look favourably upon our gifts, precious stones, fine wool, and the fairest amongst our women and come to our assistance o mighty lord". Kelshantar said unto the hunter. "Go, hunter, bring the harlot, Bashaba, with you. Have her take off her robe when the darkness comes and you hear the demons coming. When the demon sees her in her nakedness and beholds her voluptuousness he will draw near to her, and we shall in that moment come upon him and cast him low with bow and spear"

So they went forth, bringing the harlot Bashaba with them. They set off by the quickest way unto the land by the high mountains across the sands and the acacia thickets. In time did they come upon a village by the mountain waters in the appointed place, And beheld the lamentations of women and the ruin of the people of that land. Here did they wait for the coming darkness. For three days they waited as the orbs of heaven spun overhead in the firmament. Then did the darkness fall, as the great leviathan devoured the sun. In that moment did he, the devourer, the demon from beyond the mountains, the destroyer of peoples, he who eats the flesh of man and casts down villages come to the appointed place, looking for more souls to consume. For the demon was hungry for the taste of flesh.

Then he, Kelshantar, greatest of men, seeing the demon, scaled and ferocious, bearing aloft upon his head horns of iron, hands dripping with blood and fangs snarling in fury, called forth to the harlot Bashaba saying. "That is he, the demon who devoureth villages, Bashaba. Release your robes so he can behold your voluptuousness, do not be restrained, for he shall draw near to you!" Bashaba, listening to the wise Kelshantar then unclasped her robe, and exposed her voluptuousness, and the demon came near. His lust groaned, and his jaws gnashed in destructive power as he single-mindedly sought to release his energy. Yet in that moment when the demons mind was astray did the Hunter draw forth his bow. In that moment too did Kelshantar come forth with bow aloft, spear by his side, bedecked in armour of gleaming bronze.

Kelshantar took his route towards the rising sound of the demons rage, and the spirits of the gods besides took witness by his side, the, the lord approached the demon that is called devourer and desolation. He surveyed him approaching the harlot Bashaba. Soon did the demon behold the great Kelshantar, and he falters in his steps, his eyes blur and become filled with rage. The demon turning its neck towards the King roared, spitting defiance from bitter lips saying, 'Upstart, do you think yourself too great? do you think scurrying forth from your hole you can cast down I?' Then the lord raised his bow, and flung his words towards the demon in his fury " Why are you rising against these people, your pride is unsurpassed, your heart is set on devastation, so that mothers weep for their fallen sons? You have abused the order of nature and defied the gods, in bitter malevolence you threaten the children of the Most August Lord, the king of all the gods. You have sallied forth across the high mountains, and taken refuge in the darkness. Prepare for battle, stand up alone and we shall wage battle together, you and I to put an end to your hubris."

When the demon heard Kelshantars words his wits scattered, he was possessed with rage and howled in great fury, his legs shook from the crotch down, and his mouth uttered spells and maledictions. Then they met: Kelshantar, that hero of men, and the demon who is called devourer and desolation grappled alone in single combat. The lord shot his arrow and called forth the lightning upon his foe, as the pursuing tumid wind, , came from the demons hand and beat the lord in his face. Yet when the mouth gaped open to consume him body and spirit down he drove his spear of gleaming bronze in, so that the mouth would not shut. Calling upon the power of the gods he called down the heavenly fire, which struck the spear and raged a tumult in the demons belly; his carcass being shattered and cast open. He gaped, and now the hunter shot forth his arrow that split the belly of the demon, piercing its gut which had consumed the tribe that dwelt by the high mountains, and ravaged the land. The demon knelt low, and the Lord sword aloft conquered the demon who is called devourer and desolation, and ended its life splitting its scull in twain. He flung the devourer down and straddled the carcass. The demon was dead, his rout was shattered, his devastation ended and the tempest cast beyond the mountain wall. The race of man was saved.

When the tribe by the high mountains saw all this they were pleased and laughed aloud, and sent Kelshantar gifts. They sent him their thankful tributes of gold, and bronze, of precious stones, fine wool and fair maidens. Thus was the fame of the King Kelshantar, avatar of the Lord of ways, he who stands between heaven and the world and bears in his hands right authority and banishes ignorance spread far and wide after the return of the king to the lands of the people, where he took Bashaba to wife and wrought many great things until the end of his days when the divine spirit passed unto his son, and unto his sons even unto the present day unto him who is the divine avatar who rulleth over the people.
 
There will be if I recall correctly upon the update be a progression of events over time, and hence a culling of peoples civilisations (the river valley for example is likely to end up dominated by a few large empires) and the emergence of new ones (spin offs, and so forth). Those who don't end up with a state at the end of it will presumably choose between the states that are available, or be permitted to set up shop in newly revealed lands.

edit: put in a few words I had already into the senarai language table on the previous page for the benefit of those within the same language family. Also Dreyei and Kayei are quite clearly the same language (albeit they are slightly differing dialects of that one language) whereas Senarai and Kakoi are different but related languages (judging from the few words available of Narazhi language, I would say its an Adazhic language [NK/iggy group] with melic influences rather than the other way around). Abarneko is probably either a language isolate transplanted or a divergent adazhic language with a heavy melic substratum (either of which would fit with the historical background erez gave).
 
I just finished my culture. I should warn you that I did not explained everything because I want to keep some things for stories (as for example the formation of the language, City-States or a deeper cultural vision). The language is being a pain in the back but I'm trying to finish slowly (it's a mixture of Gaulish, Latin and maori-not necessarily in that order, or all). :deadhorse:

This is my first culture ever created and I'm not good with creations from zero. If there is something wrong with the text, I'd be happy to fix it tomorrow, good night. :)

The birth of words

Abar must be the first written word. He was abarne, the magnificent, as Abar was born from a cover of darkness. He rose from the mound and looked across the world in all directions. Then he looked up into Sigomi and breathe his first Sigomi-eri. A smile rose on his face as he felt the breath flowing through his lungs and stomach, happiness filled him. He walked three steps towards the river and whispered to the wind, and the river roared and calmed three times before out of the center a woman came out of the water. She had blue hair and blue deep eyes, she was Ranari in all of her beauty and grace.

She left the river and came to Abar, dripping with water from her naked smooth and bluish skin. She opened her mouth to speak when Abar raised his hand with a smile on his face. Abar sat on the mud near the river and drew the shape of Abar, the first written word, a small drawing of a man smiling and next to it he drew Ranari, a woman with a flowing river that makes her body. Ranari sat next to him and drew a circle and within it stars and the Segomi and Abar responded by drawing the Segomi with its rings and a faint glow going from it into all directions. Ranari than took Abar’s hand and drew the darkness, and then she draw with her own finger and drew a single calling bird.

Abar looked at Ranari with a faded smile, understanding that this is the last Ashi Inne before the darkness comes again, before Tetsurot awakens once again. He drew several more signs into the mud and Ranari read the signs, stood up and smiled. Then she turned her back and left back to the river, as a great wave came and took her away into the water. Abar was left alone and looked back to his birthplace. He saw Tetsurot of the darkness and upon him Malko who covered his darkness in a lying mask of light. Malko stared back at Abar, she was awake.

Malko smiled at Abar and opened her mouth but was moved to a surprise when no sound came. Abar smiled to her two smiles. Malko’s face grew in rage for the insult but Abar came to her and drew on the mound’s sand next to her a face with no body, a mask with holes for eyes and mouth. Malko nodded in anger and was going to get up as the sun was falling in the sky but Abar drew another word, a glimmering star next to her name, and a flowing cover around it, and Malko fell to sleep again.

Abar than drew a large mark of darkness, flowing and cruel but also knowing and old, and next to it he drew an emptiness. When the sun finished its fall behind the Segomi, Tetsurot did not rise and Abar fell to the ground. He could not feel the breath of Segomi-eri anymore and could not move. He could not breathe. He closed his eyes waiting to leave.

Then a great wave flushed on the shores and Ranari appeared again, smiling a worried smile to Abar who opened his eyes when he heard the wave. She sat next to him and drew the Segomi-eri that he drew before and then touched his forhead. He was filled with the Segomi-eri that is within her and sat. He then drew a new woman with a flowing river for a body, but now added glow that came from within her and marked her chest with the Segomi. He then stood up, turned away smiling and left.

This were the first written words of the Abarneni when Abar spoken to Ranari and stopped the darkness from rising again. This was not the beginning nor the end, but it was the most important story of them all, the story of the power of the written words, a power that will one day be used by other men to create the Abarneni under the order of Abar. This story is important and any child must know it. That is why I told it to you, my child.

And remember. Abar must always be the first written word. For he was the first written word and the first writer of words, the first to use their power. Tomorrow I will tell you of how things begun, but for today, read the signs on the paper, for it is the skill that grants us power.
 
Danginsing

Society: Most Danginsing spend most of their life on the Mnuisan [Mother Sea] on their Osan [Ships] which they live on and use to ply the length and breadth of Mnuisan. Osan take two forms. Nugaosan [Family Ships] which are comprised of extended families who live together and practice what might be termed sea farming. These Osan tend operate in large groups and might be thought to be analogous to a village in function and are to be found all the sea. The second kind of Osan, Sidaosan [Black Ships] draw their crew from the young males of the Nugaosan who are required in Osan culture to wander around the world until they acquire enough knowledge of the outside world and riches. In some cases, these riches are acquired through trade, particularly with the Danginsings more terrestrial cousins to the south, while in other cases their riches are acquired through plunder sometimes through hiring themselves out as mercenaries, sometimes as pirates and often as slavers. Slaves can be sold for large amounts elsewhere in the world including in the Danginsing homelands where their labor is prized. The Danginsing living in the homelands make up only a small fraction of the total Danginsing population but have a disproportionate influence over their seaborne cousins (though most Danginsing in the homelands still live on boats even if they work on land) because of their role in producing all the things the Danginsing cannot produce themselves at sea: beer, wine, salt, leather, wood and osan. Moreover, the all important Danginsings religious caste must live on land being barred from sleeping on a ship. All Danginsings answer to Ngonosan [Ship Fathers] who in turn answer to their own Ngonosan until one reaches the prow of the ship, the Godlike Masananosan [Old Man of the Ship] who has huge practical and ceremonial power over his children. In this way, all Danginsings are linked together.

Lineage: Matrilineally as all Nugaosan are owned by women. Sidaosan spend a lot of time in between raiding and trading shopping around for the best deal from the Nugaosan to allow them to settle down. Interestingly, women often share husbands because of the relatively high attrition rate among the Sidaosan.

Food: The Nugaosan do farm on land but tend to move around from time to time between sites but always in a circular fashion. Principle crops include taro, which grows rather like a weed at the worst of times, sago palm, coconuts, sweet potato, pumpkins, yams, cassava and pretty much everything in the ocean that can possibly be eaten - and some things other people don't think can be eaten. Case in point, the Nugaosan like to eat raw sea urchin which is consumed raw using a hollow piece of wood which is hammered through the outside shell. The Nugaosan are also known to engage in various forms of aquaculture including seaweed and kelp which is tied to stakes to encourage growth, oysters which are attached to long lines and crabs and crayfish which are raised on the refuse of the Nugaosan.

Religion(s): The Nugaosan worship the Mnuisan in all her guises and the Nugaosan themselves which are considered to be living things. The priestesses of the Nugaosan are all female and are those that are bound to the land. Sometimes the newly nominated priestesses of the Nugaosan are marooned on remote islands to allow their kinsmen to worship without having to return to the Homelands. Given the distance involved, formal worship is often infrequent but when it occurs it tends to be exuberant and expensive. Slaves are sacrificed to placate Mnuisan. Slaves are sacrificed to quicken new Nugosan with life. It is for this reason, at least in part, that the Sidaosan seek out slaves. The Sidaosan for their part worship Mnuisan in the form of her Consort the Living God Masananosan who is selected from the best living warriors of the Siadosan. Individual fleets of Sidaosan might also worship one of their number who manifests an aspect of the Masananosan such as Mala-Masa [Victorious Lord] who ritually eats the hearts of fallen enemies or Ngueng-Masa [City Lord] who takes the prettiest virgin women of fallen cities and towns for his own.

Language(s): The Dangingsing language is quite similar to the Kranaali language and is generally mutually intelligible

Origins: The Nugaosan believe that Mnuisan gave birth to the Danginsing as punishment for the First People abandoning her and living on land. The Daningsing as her beloved Second People have made no such mistake. It is for this reason that the priestesses of the Nugaosan are confined to land, as a means of reminding all Daningsing of the pain of separation from Mnuisan. The propensity of Nugaosan priestesses to be confined to small islands or in the Homeland far distant from their families obviously doesn't help to allay their spiritual anguish.

Economic Base: There are three legs of the Danginsing economy. The first, osanin (pirate, including the terrestrial sort who fight for kings) are important because of the constant flows of exotic and valuable goods they bring back to the Nugaosan. The second, osanan have much the same function but often bring with them rather more mundane goods like grain and timber. Not quite as flashy as a bevvy of snmun [beautiful] slave-girls (which are somewhat useless from the perspective of the matriarchs of the Nugaosan, except as shepherds and farm laborers) or a box of gold but useful all the same. The final role, osanung (fisherman) covers the whole gamut of other activities from blacksmiths (who have their own transportable forges) to farmers (who manage a range of terrestrial crops from their Osan) to actual, honest go goodness, fishermen who specialise in taking more exotic species that are not available in the current anchorage.

Polity Names: City and community names tend to be lengthy and descriptive, but are usually shortened for the sake of convenience. The names are almost always descriptive and relate to legends or famous historical events, people or ships. Some examples include: Osanungosanngueng (Fishing Ship City) which is shortened to Osangueng, Snmunwinyungueng (Beautiful Spirit City) which is shortened to Snmuneng, Dangnaamgueng (Red Water City) which is shortened to namanagueng (Alcohol City). Other examples include Masanangueng (Old Man City), Winungogueng (City of the Gods) and Osaninnuga (Pirate Clan).

Person Names: Danginsing names tend to be one word long and use either a pleasing thing e.g. tla (sun), isa (star) or a virtue, characteristic or outcome the parents wish the child to have e.g. yinda (happy) or tallamala (shining victory). Danginsing use traditional Clan names that more or less mirror those of their southern Kranaali kinsmen e.g. Tallanga, Salanga, Nawanga and Mnmaga.

Place Names: The sea is called Mnuisan (Mother Sea), the Homeland is called Ngontlay (Father Land) and our cousins to the south are called Kranaali and their part of the world is known as Omtla (Sun Women).

Skagar

Starting Location: Angst’s claim on map

Society: Skagar gods are both hermaphroditic and genderless and both bodiless and embodied, being avatars of their element but also one with it. This ambiguous nature of the gods resonate with Skagar society which ordains it social system with castes that are indifferent to physical gender. As such, the Skagar might seem androgynous as individual dress and behavior mostly differ between castes, not between biological differences.

Lineage: The castes are usually registered in their home town, and inheritance of caste title is usually given to a child at birth.

Food: The Skagar utilize herding primarily of sheep and goats. But advanced masonry allow for some agriculture in the mountains similar to Incan terraces.

Language(s): There isn’t much interesting to be said here yet; they speak mountaineously regional dialects of the Skagar language, but for now it’s just another language. I’m considering to attribute grammatical gender per the castes, however, which I find interesting. Although you must realize I try to archieve a certain æsthetic with the names :)

Origins: The Skagar believe all humans hail from the mountains and that this ‘resting earth’ is what the world consisted of aeons ago. In the first age, the dominant god was Otom, the resting titanic planet of the sky, who was in and of the earth, molding his way as he saw fit. He gave the earth a piece of himself, raising the world’s mountains from the sea. Then humans learned to live on land, building their homes in his rocks.

Otom was eventually possessed by his child, Skyr. Skyr first usurped and destroyed the old sea gods and united the sea with the thundersky, then he met with his father and possessed his will. Skyr became the mind of Otom and brought storm into the land, as well with its feathered embodiment, the emperor raven. Basically this bird is a giant species of raven which lives the peaks of the Stygar mountains, about the size of this bird, having much the same diet. These sacred ravens, the kagelrakar, are the physical embodiment of thunder and sightings of them is commonly associated with incoming storms.

The word for mountain, otomleng, means Otom’s limb, similarly to how the word for sea, skyrral, is literally Skyr’s belly. This conception of bodily presence is still associated with a hugely potent power, like how thunderstorms are closely associated with Skyr’s rage, and the gods severely punish the Skagar who do not accept the will of Skyr and his kagelrakar.

Possession is a common event in Skagar mythology and the word has relations to our understanding of rhethorical convincing, and is as such not really a demonic power, but one that is considered a natural part of life. The best thing that can happen to a Skagar is actually to be possessed by Skyr as well – or one of his kagelrakar. The mighty storms of the sea and the solid stone of the Skagar urban design are considered a just, natural part of life, and is an example of the thundersky’s possession of the earth.

Economic Base: Economy is not very well-developed in this edge nation and is simple with primitive coinage and little exchange. But there is some trade with the West, and there are rich mineral deposits within the mountains that the

Only people working in fields of faith have last names, based upon their residence. Other people are simply surnamed after attaining a profession, such as hunter, mother, traveler drunkard or king. As hinted at by the name ‘drunkard’, they are often given in the small communities around the mountains, not chosen by the individuals themselves.

Additionally to these ‘last names’, people’s names are usually followed by their caste, as if a title (such as ‘mister’), although the caste is as having been said more similar to our idea of gender than of political or cultural class.

An example of a full Skagar ‘name’ could be Kakal mokenrag, Aspyl which would translate into Kakal (who is a) blacksmith, (of the caste) Aspyl. Only the first two are considered actual names; if translated into our culture, this tradition of naming a person would be similar to ‘Markus Persson, male’, per the gender-identity like structure of the castes.

Place Names:

The mountains are named Stygar while the sea itself is called Skyrral, which literally translates to sea.

Well, I'm on my phone now, so I fear I will not be able to create an entire language and such in time.

You people are overestimating the depth I require. I don't need you to take graduate courses in linguistics, just tell me what your language is about and give me some names to use.
 
My application is more or less complete, barring some linguistic refinement when I get back to stable internet. Please, pointers or suggestions would be helpful, my knowledge of the era isn't exactly thorough.
 
I'm afraid that my submission will not be completed by tonight. Been on vacation for the last week and only had mobile access that whole time, so I was unable to work.
