Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Wow, thank you GooglyBoogly and Sisiutil for fast and detailed reply. I have another question about unit stacks. Unit's strength reduce in a large stack, I assume this would affect when defending only. When I'm attacking, would this reduction still there?.

In a non-important tiles, would you recommend that split into 2 tiles squares with 2 units on each or 4 units on a single tile square to keep the reduction low?

Unit strength is completely unaffected by how many units are in the stack. Generally a big stack is safer than scattering units, since its easier to have all possible counter units in it. The only downside is if you're attacked by units that do collateral damage, which will affect several units in the stack, and might just provide a reason to scatter troops. However there's a maximum number of units that can be affected by collateral damage (6?), so the solution is just to make an even bigger stack.

There's a couple of other issues, like flanking attacks and nukes which are bad news for big stacks of units, but normally it's best just to keep your units together.

I have some:

When I’m attacking a city, is there any way I can choose the defenders my units fight with? I would like to take an archer with a unit that has promotion against archers, but instead I get one that has promotions or bonuses against my attacker. This also happens when I’m being attacked…

Is it better to use the great scientist to make academies in different cities rather than to make them all join the science city?

Thanks! and sorry for my english... it's not my mother tongue, but I hope it's readable:)

I can only answer a few of your questions... and your English is fine!

The attacking / defending automation is part of the Civ4 core features. Nearly every unit has a unit that counters it, and the game takes advantage of that. It encourages the player to have varied units in a stack attacking a city, or having defensive units in your stack to protect it as you march up to the city.

Great Scientists ... like many Civ questions, this depends on a few factors. If you have a city with tiles around it which make it especially good for commerce, then you may want to make it your Super Science City (SSC). Build an academy there, and then join later Great Scientists as super specialists. If your map is slightly different, where you have 3 cities that have moderate commerce, you may consider building academies in all 3 cities, along with libraries and universities.

Given the science boost that you get from the Oxford University national wonder, you will probably want to join your later Great Scientists to that city, effectively making it your SSC.

Every type of unit except archery units (excluding quechas), which is why they make such good city defenders, and such a pain when attacking.

The one exception to the rule about not choosing who you attack is with Ballistica Elephants, hte Khermer UU, which will attack mounted units first.

Yup! I didn't realized that in Civ IV the trades are permanent.
Note that after the trade has been in effect for 10 turns, either party can cancel it. One way to do this is by going to the Foreign Advisor (F4) screen, clicking on the Active tab, and then clicking on that deal; you'll get a confirmation message before cancellation actually happens.

I have some:

When going for a cultural victory, is it better to make the early great artists join a city than to stockpile them and use them at the end of the game for the lagging city? I know there are many variables to consider for this, so I’m thinking of these ones: first artist pops… I don’t know, as soon as the game allows it to; all cultural building available for 3-4 religions, until Liberalism, are built on spot; almost no world wonders; normal speed and aim for cultural win before 1800. If yes, what is the maximum year limit for this to do (make them join a city)?

A Great Artist produces 12 culture. So, assuming you don't have cathedrals or the Hermitage in the city, 334(rounded up) turns before 1800 (I'm not sure when that is). That seems very close to the beginning of the game to me. Well before you could get a great artist. Assuming that you beelined for music and got cathedrals up pretty fast, that might be x3 culture in that city(four cathedrals). 334 divided by three is 112(rounded up). Again, I don't know when that is. I'm guessing somewhere around 1000 AD.

Does spreading your corporation into an AI empire cause them to declare war on you? Washington was pleased with me, then I spread the mining company into one of his cities and him (and his vassal Shaka) declared ware on me.

I don't think corporations have diplo effects.
Someone else probably has more info.

Corporations have no effect on diplomatic relations, and can't trigger a war. "Pleased" only really translates to "marginally in favour of you at the moment", and the AI will often attack you even if Pleased. You really need to get up to Friendly to be reasonably sure they won't attack.

I have researched scientific method which I learnt obsolotes monastaries.

Sooo... I can no longer build monastaries right? So If I have no monastary I cannot build it, right? So once I discover scientific method I can no longer train missionaries?!?? Is that correct? Does this go for all people on the map (i.e. all monastaries are obsoleted?) But why does my confucian monastary still let me train monastaries?

Do I need to make sure I have all the monastaries I need before I get scientific method?

Also, I have Buddhist STupa still on my building list, but it is greyed out even though I have all the pre-requisites - why might this be?

You can only train missionaries after scientific method in cities that either already have monasteries or if you are running organized religion. SM only makes it so that you can't build anymore monasteries. It only works for you, the AI gets to wait until it learns SM. As for the Stupa, you're probably building it somewhere else and don't have enough temples for two.

Hi,
Have few questions fanatics:
1. How can I know about others civilization economy and their trade business with me?
2. Can I use spy to know, what have they built in their cities? Buildings and so on?
3. If I would conquer or raze their city, where SDI is, will they still intercept my nukes so sucesfull or I wil be able to bomb them a lot :)

Thank you for answers a lot.

Hardly a newbie, but as good a place as any....

Look at the screenshot combat odds...

Am I going mad or is that wrong? i.e. how can 5.50 vs 6.00 be odds of 59.0%? Surely the odds should be on my side?

Any clarification replies appreciated......
Yours :crazyeye:

P.S. It's a mod using Dale's Combat Mod as one component, so if Im not going mad then Im wondering if somethings going wrong...

The only thing that I can think of would be if the catapult had Drill promos. It affects combat odds but not strength.

1/ Not sure what you're talking about; look into the foreign advisor screen (f4) to know your current deals with other leaders.
2/ In Vanilla and warlords, yes; in BTS, this is a passive espionage mission, you just need to accumulate enough espionage points against a civ to get this result.
3/ SDI is a project, not a wonder. Specifically, it means that it is not "located" in a city, like a wonder.

The swordsman could have been damaged, then healed after combat back to full, you would need to scroll up a bit further to when the sword gets hit once and see the hp.

Maybe possible, but I never saw it, so.....

I'm pretty sure the combat screen doesn't wotk like that. i.e. the strengths presented are the actual ones at the point of combat...

Thanks anyway guys :) I'm going to try some WB stuff to set my mind at rest.
