If I have met A and seen his territory, and I trade world maps with B (who has not met A), does this effectively introduce A to B? The map will include A's territory, so presumably that is all it takes for B to establish contact with A, correct?

no. it does not. You will know where other ai is, but that does not mean you can talk to them.

There is a big difference in this one, and in civ III. In Civ III they refused to show you other AI's territories if you didn't have contact. Now you get to see those territories, but you still don't have contact. Sometimes I have to build a boat and move to the other continent to make contact. I usualy do this because I want to find someone to sell my techs to. The more contacts the better.

In my last OCC-challenge I got the whole map and saw all and everybody but was still missing two trading partners. Since my city was not on the coast I could not make contact with them and I missed a lot of tech trading.
