Quick Questions and Answers

I'm playing on Prince difficulty and I constantly get the populaiton unhappy and I lose a lot of money... Any hints? Maybe I'm missing some strategy or maybe I'm expanding to quickly...
With my same stile of play, I don't get any problems in lower difficulties.
Thanks

Welcome to (the posting side of) the forums. :wavey:

In terms of gold, the best thing to do is probably to see if you have any unnecessary roads or buildings or units, and get rid of them. It's not like Civ4 in that regards; these things are expensive. You don't want to be paying for a road you don't need, or a building that's next to useless, or a unit that you aren't ever going to use.

In terms of happiness, if you hover your mouse over the happiness icon, it will break down what is giving you happiness and unhappiness. Population gives unhappiness, so you have to balance this with buildings. You may not be building enough happiness buildings, or you may not have access to enough happiness resources.

Is going for theocracy (In Piety social policy tree. Get -20% from population, but you have to get organized religion first) good in a domination game? Or is it better to just invest in rationalism or autocracy or order?

in a domination game. after filling out piety, i just save everything for autocracy...seems easier that way but its just me. winning domination on prince isn't a big deal in civfanatics forum :p too many pros!

For what purpose do naval units have melee strength? As I understand it, they cannot engage in melee combat...

They can't engage in melee combat, but I believe that their melee strength determines how well they defend against other ships.

The melee strength of a ship determines how well it survives bombardment. The attacker's ranged strength is compared to target's base (melee) strength.

I find theocracy to be one of the all around best social choices out there, unless I'm planning on being rationalist. But I tend to get fairly large cities regardless of what kind of victory I'm pursuing so 20-30 :c5happy: from it is not uncommon.

So I am in a game where I had 3 coastal cities +3 hammer (Merchant Navy) and +5 Communism policies and while my building times were quick, do you lose the hammer bonuses from factories and Plants after running out of strategic resources like coal and aluminum?

Also, how come they don't limit National Wonders to the two per city anymore? Now you just spam them in the capital to maximize the bonuses. Makes for bad game play.

You don't lose hammer bonuses if you are out of the resource.

I don't find it much matters where you build national wonders, most of the bonuses are fixed. Personally I never liked the limit of 2 from Civ 4, but that tag is still in the XML and easy to mod in, if it bothers you that much.

1. How do you use a mod? When you downloaded it, what do you have to do next to play? For example, I downloaded the huge Earth map with 22 (or 23) players, what do you have to do now?

2. When you ''demand'' something to an AI who is friendly to you... Do you say: ''Give this to me or I'll tear you in pieces!'' or ''Sorry bud... But I need your help. Would you please give this to me?''

Thanks for the help. ;)

Question: If you "liberate" a captured AI settler from barbarians and choose to take it to yourself, you get a worker unit, not a settler. Does the same apply to the the AI if you choose to return it? That is, does the unit type of a liberated unit change for the AI as well?

In most cases you of course want to keep the unit, but there was a situation in which I needed to escort the free worker for quite a long distance with a military unit which was still positioned to scout new territory... If the AI gets a worker, the diplomacy bonus might have been worth it - giving back a settler helps the AI a bit too much :)

Thanks in advance!

I have recently started playing immortal difficulty, after winning constantly on the lower levels. Does anyone know if there is any sort of "attack" bonus for the AI on this difficulty? I find I am loosing swordsman and horseman to the AI's single attack from Archer's and other weaker units:mad:. I am sure this didn't happen on Emperor. It's hard enough to raise a decent army and not go bankrupt. If they get attack bonus as well, I dont think that is right.

Any advice for this level is appreciated :)

Returning a settler will give them their settler back. It only changes to a worker if you keep it.

The AI does not get outright combat bonuses at higher levels. However, they do get free XP (I think it's free XP every turn, distributed among their units, but not 100% sure on the mechanics). If those archers are especially highly promoted they might be doing enough damage to kill your units. Level 3 open targeting against your un-promoted swordsman in the open I could see doing 10 points of damage sometimes.

When the AI says something to you (denouncements etc) you have two options as answer (We´re sorry... & Get over it)

Are there any differences between the two answers in terms of relationship?

I don't understand how movement is working in combat.
Why does it take all four moves of a tank to attack unit outside a city in adjacent hex?
Why can damaged mechanised infantry move only one hex when alongside the enemy and a city in revolt?
It seems that these units will now be lost to the enemy next turn. I had expected them to escape and have chance to recover.
Even naval units are picky about routes around island cities. What is it about the hexes that surround a city that suck up movement?

@Caesar of Rome: Well, unless you have the Blitz promotion, your units can only attack once per turn.

And the city and unit movement issue is caused by zones of control (Something that was better used in Civ3). Units lose all movement if moving alongside an enemy unit. In Civ3, you'd have a chance of losing a HP if moving next to a fast unit.

@Michkov: I believe that both determine how the AI thinks about you.

Do workers acquired from other Civs work slower than your own?
