Escape Velocity aims to build and explore a futuristic post-cyberpunk Earth.

The events of the story begin in 2092.

Technologically, computing and connectivity have evolved to a scale where humanity experiences physical and virtual reality simultaneously and continuously. Medical and materials technology have advanced to a point where cybernetic augmentation is widely available but except for several pieces of computational hardware, relatively unused due to the availability of superior options. The gerontological treatment, effectively halting the aging process and bringing new vigor and energy to the elderly has been available for almost two decades already; the oldest human is already over 125 years of age. The successful implementation of fusion energy and the development of high energy batteries and suprapowerful electric motors has allowed Earth to circumvent many of the limitations relating to energy of the 20th and early 21st centuries. Nano, engineering and constructing material at the single molecule level, is only just beginning to come into its own. Rho-field manipulation allows the levitation of rho-eggs (flying cars) and rho-trains, as well as opening new avenues in medicine and space exploration. Man has colonized the moon.

And so while technology has answered many of the pressing needs of previous decades and centuries, it has also led to new concerns and crises. The ‘internet’, which we call the maelstrom, serves as a breeding ground for virtual ‘life’, and that ‘life’ has learned from us how to kill biological systems, like humans, making us of wary and occasionally very real victims of the maelstrom. Fusion energy is not nearly as efficient or cost-effective as it needs to be to produce the energy the world needs. Despite our best efforts at curbing climate change, and our first tentative steps towards terraforming our own planet, the damage of our ancestors remains and we continue to do active harm to our atmos- and biospheres. The longevity treatment has led to huge social upheaval across the globe. It is expensive and time-consuming, the wait times for treatment measured in years, and occasionally in decades. Those without are known as ‘mortals’ and those with… well, one wonders what they sold to afford the treatment. The masses speak of divergent speciation.

Socially and culturally, and especially politically, the world has changed. The trend towards globalization that was reinventing the economic and cultural identity of Earth’s people for the last hundred years has only accelerated, linking us physically through wide-spread transport availability, economically, though millions and millions of worldwide transactions every day, and of course through the connectivity of modern computing. Certainly almost every political border has been redrawn as nations and national identities have collapsed, to be replaced with a post-national structure called ‘phyles’. Trans-national corporations with greater wealth and resources than most early 21st century first-world nations govern populations alongside phyles built around cultural or ideological identities. While each of these have central ‘heartland’ territory where their presence is dominant, they all also have tens or hundreds of thousands of enclaves as large as major cities to as small as a single office tower strewn across the globe, making physical borders between the phyles effectively impossible to define, let alone police or limit.

Free-market capitalism, like communism at the end of the 20th century has for the most part collapsed, the run-away predatory nature of its largest and most competitive- and most successful- institutions ultimately leading to the downfall of the system as a whole. This was cemented when the majority of the world’s population rose up against accelerating wealth segregation and the dissolution of the middle class first, unsuccessfully in the late 2050s, then again, with greater success, in 2061. Today much of the world’s population lives in financial systems variously called social market capitalism, coopetition, or democratic economics, depending on its implementation and the speaker.

Despite this, the transition to a post capitalist economic model is not complete and much of the world continues to live in abject poverty. The supra-rich aren’t going anywhere fast and are only too eager to continue to exploit social and world resources when they can to entrench their positions. And the poor are so very expensive to care for, many have no state, no phyle to call home and have come to be known as the unaffiliated. Without medical or nutritional support, beset by the effluent and pollution of the wealthier, and their inexpensive labor often predated upon by those with better prospects, their lives are often diseased, violent, and short. And despite the successes of the ‘middle way’, the world is as fractured by competing economic models as it is by culture, religion, or ideology,

And so the world is not the dystopia of the cyberpunk genre, where there is no hope and one lives a life in rebellion of the faceless powers above, and neither is it the utopia of imagined science fiction writers of old. It is something else, something I hope is both realistic and interesting.

I invite you to explore the world of Escape Velocity and consider participating in this game. I intend to launch in ~3 weeks.

If you would like to play, please list your two favorite triple-A related phyles and your two favorite double-AA or A rated phyles that you might want to play (see factions).

Also indicate which forum(s) you would be comfortable playing on. I need 14 players before launch.

Hey,

Very interesting. Quickly looking, here is my list.

3A
1. Mitsubishi Keiretsu
2. Shengen

2A or A
1. ASEAN
2. Catholic Church (Though this would be a big reach for my basic understanding).

As to were. Here of course. :D

Either would be fine for me. If I only had the addy for the other site.

This looks pretty neat.

Triple-A:
1. New Atlantis
2. Puszcza Wynd

Double-A:
1. Zen-Serotonin
2. Persia

I can play at either forum.

Oh allah this looks fun. I'm down with either forum.

AAA:
1. Apauruṣeya
2. New Atlantis

A(A):
1. Mondragon
2. Scotland

Already claimed at the Frontier, but here are my choices.
AAA
Mitsubishi
New Atlantis

Mondragon
Quebec

Don't really care which forum:
1. Puszcza Wynd
2. Amazonia

A/AA
1. Zen-Seartonin
2. Persia

Although I will be honest; I know more about the future soldiers and void-airships than I do about most of the minors (or majors). Monks with Zen-Trance superpower sounds to cool to blindly pass up, whatever that actually means. Although I have to ask, has Quebec expelled all the Anglo-phones and native-who-complain-about-mercury-in-the-water and reclaimed "their" territory from Labrador yet :p? I can't help but sense a pattern in your near-future neses.

To bring things together, here are the current postings:

It looks like most people are picking the AAA phyles that have a flashy banner or an established superproject (myself included). Since I was wondering this myself, I'll ask - can we expect the unloved factions to be more fleshed out as we move towards launch? If we pick a "barebones" AAA phyle, will we have input on their backstory and starting projects, or is that already defined behind the curtain?

Well, one of the reasons for this is (probably) the paucity of information on most of the factions; we're largely running of off a brief list of values and whatever project they have. For example, here's what we know about Pambazuka:
Capital: Kinshasa (4°19′30″S 15°19′20″E)

Popluation: 836 million

Values: African culture, Family, Educatoin, Democracy Pan-African

Description: One of the oldest phyles

If we can assume that the start positions an ideologies and what not are largely set, then that really doesn't tell us much, does it. Could be in for a shock if you choose it.

Also, I would like to swap the positions of Amazonia Pusxzcz Wynd on my list, given the new info on them.

Dark Saber

Amazonia, Pusxzcz Wynd
Zen-Serotonin, Persia

yeah- i'm hoping to build up their individual descriptions over the next little while. in the meantime, you can learn about them indirectly though references in the other wiki pages.

Yeah, picked up a few hints that way, particularly what Deus was, and why it destroyed London.

Certain phyles (New Atlantis, Mitsubishi, Puszcza Wynd, Shengen), were more popular than expected. So I’ve tried to assign you the best I can to the primary phyles but there’s just too much overlap between you.

Nuka, Seon, Blaze Injun, Mrrandomplayer, Thomas.Berubeg, Hbar
At this point I would ask that some of you consider some of the other phyles. If you switch away from a phyle that is ‘overbooked’ to a new phyle without any sign-ups, you can assume you are confirmed for the new phyle.

Phyle Assignments

Amazonia
Dark Saber (confirmed)

Apauruṣeya
Southern King (confirmed) (I chose southern king for Apauruṣeya despite there being multiple applicants because I believe he would know the underlying mythologies that have been popularized as cultural ‘motifs’ better than most)

Atlas America

Chavis

Lei Feng
Valleron (confirmed)

Mitsubishi Keiretsu
Nuka or Seon or Blaze Injun

New Atlantis
Seon or Mrrandomplayer

Pambazuka

Puszcza Wynd
Thomas Berubeg or Mrrandomplayer

Qeng Ho
Hbar or Thomas.Berubeg

Shengen
Sifaus (confirmed)

Ummah Al Salaam

United Socialist Peoples
Megs (confirmed)

Also, I do believe we need two more players.

I'm willing to take Pambazuka

Edit: xpost :p

Thanks, Hbar, that in turns confirms Puszcza Wynd for Mrrandomplayer and New Atlantis for Seon.

Excellent Hbar!

So, ummm... what exactly is a phyle?

Also, a lot of people were asking "Whats a phyle? How are they not like or like nation states?" Hopefully if you check out this link you'll have a better idea of what I mean:

I'm sure thats not true (better job than you), but i put you on Pambazuka. I think they are pretty cool but if you prefer something else, we can switch you.

Thanks for the kind words. Pambazuka will be just fine thanks.

When will the game start/what is the plan? : )

I plan to start in the first or second week of November.

Things that remain to be done:

All the stats are done except the militaries. Military stats I intend to write as open-ended descriptions. If you want to try your hands at writing your own military stats (avoid quantitative descriptions and stick to the qualitative), that would be super helpful- at least as a starting place. I might just provide stats with point form notes on military and fill in the details on the military stuff later.

The map is about 2/3s done. I need to spend a night just working on that. Unfortunately there isn’t much that can be done by the players to assist with that.

Other than that, its all just the wiki that needs to be completed. I want to complete a description and a banner for each AAA phyle and clean up the description on a few of the AA and A phyles. I guess I could offload some of that by putting up my ideas for each phyle in point-form and letting the adopting player fill in the descriptions. Also, if you like making banners, please go ahead. I used gimp-which is freeware and managed some not so horrible ones- in my opinion. You are welcome to do whatever- keep the scale the same though I think its 720 by 120 or something like that…

I think today or tomorrow I will try to post example stats so people will know what to expect in terms of complexity. (don’t worry- there is only one currency to spend- economic points (EP)- everything else is a lagging indicator)

That said, what are the most important factors people would like to see developed before the others? I’m guessing at least point-form descriptions of their phyles, completion of their ‘projects’, a map, and stats in that order? And after that complete the wiki’s history, military, and technology sections before the others?

We’ll start with a brief ‘update 0’ once those things are complete and then its up to you, the players to really make this world come alive.
