How do you get influential over other civs?

Seriously I have no clue. I'm in the modern age and Austria is tied with me in tourism with 46 tourism. I'm 0 our of 4 for each civ when I check the tourism page. So how do I get influential?

Carlsguides does a pretty excellent job of explaining all of your major tourism mechanics here, and there's also a slightly older Deity Cultural guide done by Deau off the top of my head. They'll do a much better job of explanation than I.

Especially the third post in the above guide explains the many ways you can increase your tourism output to the other civs. It's from 2014, but I'm sure most of it still holds up and will definitely answer your question from the OP.
