Reworking Hell

I would go with 2 and 4, or atleast give 2 a try. It's main advantage is that you can very easily see what is coast and what is ocean.
 
well i always had the problem with 2) that the detail texture of the coast would also encroach some pixels on land. this was very apparent on desert coast and you can also see it in the screenshot i posted earlier, that the coast texture is going a bit on land.

however i fixed this by adjusting the alpha layer of the coast blend texture, now the land texture goes a bit into the water before the cost texture starts. this allowed me also to adjust the coloring a bit, here is a screenshot:

i am fairly happy with it, unless you have problems with the texture. for hell i would simply use 4), but with the same blend texture as the screenshot above, i.e. the hell terrain will go slightly into the ocean before the coast texture begins.

looks good, and the hell terrain version is probably more interesting than a generic sea of lava.
