Better hotseat?

So, my father and I recently started a game of Civ 5 (1v1, quick pace), but it has been anti-climatic. A lot of it has been a repetition of "end turn, pass laptop, end turn,...". Is there anything I can do to add more action and less turns?

Sadly no. Primarily because of the fact that Multiplayer to this day does not support any for of modding or even frigging Scenario play (Seriously firaxis)

The only thing you can do as far as I know is change the game pace to quick when you start the game.

Actually not true anymore! With the release of the SKD tools it is possible to get mods in multi. All players need the same mods, but it works.. I'll look up the post and link it...
