About pirates, how should I play with them?

I have given a shot try to the pirates, to see how it is, but maybe I dont get it, they only have free colonist, criminal and soldiers, (no specialization), and about units, I only see pirate caravels, and pirate galleons, these last ones can attack, but only 4 strengh, so I almost can sink a single caravel.

Are the pirates just like that? if so, how can one develop a game with such little number of units and no specialist??

Dale abandoned developing the pirates in his mod, theyre not really there for playing anymore If you wanna play as a pirate i suggest you have a search for one of Kailrics mods , Pirates & Privateers i think it is
