Anyone want to share what they liked about the game?

I am amazed at the number of people who announce that the game is in some way worthless to them because of opening day bugs. They can’t see a gem through a little bit of dirt. Any of you hear about the opening day of Disneyland? There were a few bugs to be worked out, but people didn’t give up on it.

How about this, I’ll just put in one a few of the bugs and complaints I’m reading. Then... we can move on. Please, share what you like about the game.

Here are a few of the bugs:
Weak AI. Ships start at the bottom of the map. At times the map is hard to see. No disbanding colonies.

And, here are a few lost game concepts:
Custom house. Vet. Soldiers in the field become Continental Soldiers. Natives asking for food. The king volunteering you to fight his wars. Intervention of other European powers in the Revolution.

Does any of that ruin the game for me? Am I quitting? NO!

And then there are just dumb complaints:

1. The game is too short.
Well, then move the little slider over to “marathon.” It works like that – you get to choose the length of the game. Don’t play on normal if you want a long game.

2. Natives run out of gold too fast.
Well, probably because they haven’t been in the market for long building up a big economy based on the kings gold. Just guessing on this one.

3. The REF size should not be connected to liberty bell production.
Come on. Why do you think the king builds that massive army? He’s scared as calls for independence ring, so he responds.

4. The tutorial should have warned us to keep liberty bell production down.
Seriously? For the game to be fun, the programmers have to tell us exactly what the computer is basing its decisions on? Good to know, but there is no reason to complain that it’s not in a book or a tutorial.

5. The interface is not user friendly.
Neither is a keyboard. Just keep practicing: ASDF, ASDF, ASDF someday you’ll learn to type.

6. The map shouldn’t be curved.
When you sink that low to complain, it’s really not worth answering.

7. The map is too small.
This isn’t civ. Just a few colonies.

8. There are too many natives.
That was also Andrew Jacksons view.

9. I’ve sunk xxx hours into playing this game and it sucks.
As if the number of hours you put into the game makes you more of an expert in determining if it is fun or not. Am I really supposed to feel for someone who thinks they have wasted their time playing the game, but are now giving their time to complaining about the game? If your time was wasted, quit thinking about it and move on. See a shrink, get over it!

10. Colonization 1 was a better game.
So go play it.

I like this game. Though strangely titled, the game is exactly what it was advertized: A blend of Colonization concepts and civilization engine.

So, having heard everyone complain for a week about what a bad game it is... anyone want to share why they like the game?

Hey man I really like this game as well I think it has the potential to be great just needs patch. I've been enjoying the ride so far :D wasting tons of time building my plantations and setting up an economy. I think they have captured the time sink quality of the original I have found my self burning up quite a few nights just playing this game thinking I was only playing for an hour and looking at the clock to find out I played for 4 hours. Yeah its got its problems but its gonna be amazing after a couple of patches :)

Just....one....more......turn......

Exploring, trying to work out whether that land you just discovered is part of the huge land mass you're on, or just an island.

Trading. I don't know why, but there's something very satisfying about shifting resources around and trying to build the ultimate efficient rum making economy.

Graphics. I like them. More atmospheric than Civ and the whole interface is about 20 times better than Col 1.

To your list of 'dumb complaints' (well, complaints I just don't understand) I'd add:

11 "It's absolutely identical to Civ 4".

11 "It's absolutely identical to Civ 4".

Thats a good point I saw some guy on another forum say the game was exactly like Civ4 and guess what he didn't even play this game he just said that it was exactly like civ4 for no apparent reason other then the name nice argument :)

May I suggest the unofficial patch to help resolve a few of those bugs (and working on it more and more). :) http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=293253

Why just tonight, I fixed the AI armies and it beat me to an independance victory around turn 250 on conquistador (this will appear in v1.03). ;)

Add to that comments like:

12. "It's not enough like Civ4."
Was someone thinking it was a secret Civ5?

Things I like:
1. Not running out of tools for my pioneers. I got sick of running them back to the fort to get more tools. "My shovel broke."

2. It has a civ feel without being civ.

3. I like starting from nothing, building my own mini-empire and then trying to kick the snot out of the King of England (or whoever).

I really like the culture boundaries. They keep your rivals off your land (open borders? not a chance) and let you peacefully dispossess the indians of their land.

The Founding Fathers allow for plenty of devious plans (I must get Peter Minuet so I'll trade guns and horses to the indians and hope they don't attack me). Sure they are not all useful but then again why should they be balanced. Let the others nations waste points on a free caravel while I am grabbing the rest.

Missionaries/training in villages is a great combination. Get a convert and train him in the same village. In fact with the indian villages allowing multiple training (even convicts) you don't really need schools at all.

here are a few changes i would want the game to have:
1. REF should be tied with time/difficulty.
Each refusal of money given to the king results in 5% faster REF buildup.
2. natives should restock there gold a lot faster.
like 500 per turn x number native villages x bonuses for being prosperous.
with a cap wealth of 20 times that value.
3. education penalty cap of 5. so that the penalty is never greater then 150%
4. higher level schools halfs the time needed to be trained.
5.cross immigration should be have a cap value of 300 crosses/225 for english.
6. The european AI should get a bonus on all difficulties above easiest, since they too weak. Make the AI have more men so they are on more even footing with the human players.
7.founding fathers like peter minuit should have there bonus lessened while the later founding fathers should have there bonus increased.

Reason for 1. I like this idea since it rewards the good player and is alot harder to exploit.
Reason for 2 is to keep them useful throughout the game, but only as support unless you trade with a lot of native tribes. Also it helps gives a much needed bonus to the different founding native relations founding fathers.
Reason for 3/4 is to keep education useful troughout the game.
Reason for 5 is to make crosses an alternative for food cities, and to make the english bonus balanced and not useless.
Reason for 6 is to make the game a little bit more intresting and fun.

But overall i would like these changes to make the game a little bit more varied and less metagameing. Also i think the different leaders will be alot better balanced with these changes.

What do you guys think?

I wouldn't mind the Indians having less gold if they had more resources for me to buy

I like the Pioneer not running out of tools
I like getting to build a lodge
I like the banana and corn and crab
I like the trade screen from GalCiv and Civ4
I like defensive pacts with Indians! (I wish they fought the King harder though)
I like that wagons still move goods after the King boycotts them!
I like that the free colonist goes to the school rather than the specialist

I'm uncertain about the Indians' not-unpredictable behavior. I never have to worry about sending treasure wagons cross-country without an escort. I'm too complacent now! :p

Things i consider an improvement over the original:

-Lots of music (over 100 songs) in good quality
-Great interface. Except that prompt messages should go in the center of your screen (i sometimes find myself clicking away thinking why my mouse doesn't work)
-Units have health bars. No more miracle soldiers that defy all odds thrown at them.
-Visible colony borders.
-The new founding father resource system. Although the founding fathers themselves are either worthless or game deciding (need rebalancing fast!)
-Multiplayer mode
-Proper modding capabilities

I'm enjoying the game.

I think those who aren't fall into a few categories:

- miss cheese elements from col 1
- want the game to be an economic sim
- want to use strategies that can't/don't work instead of what does work

I enjoy the econ part of the game and bulding up a colony but I see little point in lengthening that part of the game because if you had more settlements and generated lots more gold you'd need the cost of stuff to scale even higher faster and a bigger REF to keep the game competitive and purposeful.

I love the concept and generally like the execution.

I think the REF and WOI is fun. It gives you a clear goal to work for and there is good tension between declaring too early and risk being crushed, and waiting too long and having to face a large army with not enough turns.

I like the overall way that natives are handled. There are so many native settlements and they have some of the best spots that you pretty much have to interact with them one way or another, befriend them or kill them or a combination.

Kissing the ring, generates a real loathing of that $#%@# King.

I think the mechanism for acquiring found fathers presents the player with some tough and interesting choices. That said the difference between the best founding fathers (-25% purchasing cost or Veteran and Minutemen promotions) and the guy that gets you a couple of indentured servants is crazy.

Finally, and probably most importantly I really like they used the Civ4 engine, my hundreds of hours of playing Civ means I don't have to learn a new interface and new concepts for everything.

 yeah somtimes its better to be a bad player in terms of having fun - so evil.

Heh if only too much skill was the issue at hand it might not be so bad, well probably bad for the ones concerned but not so bad for everyone. But the reason for not being able to lose in this case has nothing to do with skill and all to do with broken game mechanics.

8. There are too many natives.
That was also Andrew Jacksons view.

Seriously, I've had a lot of fun with this game and can't wait to play it even more. Yes, some of the game's little problems irritated me, but that didn't stop me from going "One more turn" and suddenly realizing it was 4 in the morning and I had to get up again at 8! :D

Any game that can do THAT to me is pretty good in my book.. ;)

That's what I've been saying for years. Colonization rocks :D

The new version of Col just needs balancing. It's still a great game.

More good things:

-Indians standing around don't impede your units' movement
-Colonists on horseback can train at Indian settlements without losing horses
-Indian settlements can train the same profession repeatedly without the game being unbalanced
-Colored boundaries of your colony, crop yield overlay, other things from Civ4 (although the bonus resource icons tend to obscure those in colony view)
