KATHMANDU: Fate ordained that he would become king twice against all odds and fate ordained that Gyanendra, the last king of Nepal, would cause his 239-year-old ruling dynasty to lose its crown, sceptre and throne. ( Watch )

On Wednesday, the deposed king would lose his palace as well, making his final departure from there with his wife, former queen Komal.

With 24 hours still remaining for the expiry of the deadline given to the former royals by Nepal’s newly elected constituent assembly, the former king will move out of the Narayanhity royal palace on Wednesday, home minister Krishna Prasad Sitaula said.

“I have advised the former king to leave with dignity,” said the minister who met the ousted king last week to coordinate his final exit and the appropriate security measures.

“Before he leaves, he will have to hand over his crown, sceptre and other possessions of historic importance to the government committee (formed to make an inventory of the heirlooms in the palace.)”
By yet another quirk of fate, the Gyanendra’s departure comes in the same day he had taken up permanent residence in the palace as king.

Though crowned on June 4, 2001 following the murder of his elder brother king Birendra during a family dinner in the tightly guarded palace, Gyanendra chose to stay in his private residence Nirmal Niwas for 13 months while priests offered special prayers and worship to cleanse the palace of regicide and drive away evil spirits. He finally moved into the palace with his wife on July 4, 2002.

In another bizarre twist, Gyanendra’s stepmother Ratna will remain behind on Wednesday. The former queen mother had been the sole occupant of the gloomy palace in 2001 after 10 members of the royal family, including her two stepsons and stepdaughters, were gunned down, supposedly by her stepgrandson Dipendra.

The government has agreed to let the 80-year-old remain in the Mahendra Manzil, the mansion her husband Mahendra built for her in the 50s.
Thats it. So the monarchy in Nepal is finished.
