Going from Vanilla to G&K

I got the $50 G&K and tried installing it with the vanilla version still on my comp---three hours later and it was still trying to "convert" the vanilla!

Is the $26 expansion for G&K like that too?

From memory I just went into steam and used the activation code that came with the disk.
