Well, not if you are trying to buy another Great Person with faith.

I was trying to buy a Great Merchant (cost :c5faith: ) and forgot about it. Until I had about 2500 :c5faith: and realised nothing was happening. I tried to work out if there was a limit on GP (I only had 3 cities and had 8 GP floating around) then it finally dawned- I had a GP in each of the cities.

Promptly moved one out and received my merchant the next turn.

What, may I ask, were you stockpiling all those GPs for?

I had a Great Admiral and had already explored the seas so he was just sitting there. A Great Artist left over from the Louvre, two engineers I was saving for the Hubble Space Telescope and some other wonder and the rest were scientists to use as I neared completing the Apollo Mission. Basically I had also run out of land to set up specialist sites as well.

In this case, he just happened to have a random assortment of GPs, but it's not uncommon for me in some games to have 3-5 GSes waiting around until I am getting massive :c5science: and am ready to start bulbing the last few techs for the space race.

The only other time I might have Great People stockpiled is with Great Artists in the following situations:
- when I anticipate building or conquering the city with the Chichen Itza wonder
- when I am about to close Freedom and already have several Great Artists planted and want the extra-long Golden Ages for the culture bonus
- when I am Persia and am gearing up for the final war(s) :)

I can't manually buy a faith person in a city with a worker in it, so doesn't this go for all types of non-combat units.

Yes, any civilian unit in a city will block the ability to buy GPs with faith in that city.

Just for the record, the Great Admiral does not block for land-based Great Persons. You can have a GAd in the same city as a GG or other GP, just like you can have a naval and land unit in the same town.

Once I found out that Great People were the same as combat units for unit maintenance per turn, I stopped hoarding them.

But at least settlers and workers are doing something productive.

GPs languishing on the beach, drinking Mai Tai cocktails while waiting for their moment on stage, arguably are not.

On the other hand it's a good way to prevent a great prophet from being born if you're close to industrial and want to save your faith for a GS.

Excellent point. I was thinking the same thing. It's very annoying to be making a ton of faith and GPs keep popping out. I had one game where I had to plant four or five GPs as religious sites.

haha yeah it just happened to me in that ethiopia game when i had a GG in the city.. i was thinking oh crap why did i leave in the cap and then out pops the GP..
