Pre-NEB2: Feasibility Study / Workshop / Signup Thread

Geography: Frontier-like. Plains and mountains and valleys.
Military: Primarily Land and Air. No Navy.
Unique Unit: Peace Keepers (Very elite infantry)
Primary Colour: Grey
Flag: The Black Flag
Ethnicity (optional): Viking
National animal (optional): Black Pit Bull
National anthem (optional): "Revolution Begins" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2PuD3XrF9Hg
Names for people (optional): Viking names
Names for places (optional): Viking places
Notes: Anarchists were concentrating in this area before "the event". After the dust settled, new governments were popping up in the area. There was, however, a community of the ungoverned who had condensed into an area were thriving. After a series of attempts by neighboring warlords to attempt to establish control over this community, they realized that they will never live freely while governments exist. The community aggressively organized into a volunteer army who's mission it was to free other people. This volunteer army easily gained recruits after each victory and soon the entire region was swept free of governments. Voluntary interactions, contracts, and the non-aggression principle are the law in the Free Territory, with property insurance companies and third party mediators upholding these laws. When these fail private wars do sometimes erupt, but usually the parties involved do a cost-benefit analysis and realize that this is not a good way to resolve things so private wars end up being rare. Religion in this region has largely been recognized as a tool used by states to control them and has thus been rejected in favor of reason and logic.

I shall play as the driving force of the people, expressing the moods and giving general direction for the militarism of the Free Territory. When buildings are built for the Free Territory, it is owned by a private individual who then has to spend more on insurance, thus providing more money to the overall defense of the Free Territory. I'll go deeper into the details of things like military organization when the NES starts.

If you throw out the politics of the State its really not the State any more, so I'm going to scrap that and go with this:

Nation Name: Svartjufar
Ideology Picks: Survivalist Nationalists
Government Style: Democracy
Start Location: Iceland
Geography: Comparatively warm and hilly (similar to otl Iceland)
Military: Heavy naval bias.
Unique Unit: Torpedo Boat (a small gunboat armed with a rack of torpedoes).
Primary Colour: Grey
Ethnicity: A mix of Icelandic and Anglo-Celtic refugees.
National Animal: The raven.
National Anthem: (TBD)
Names for People: A mix of Icelandic names (Iceland actually doesn't have surnames - everybody is Blah [Father]sson or Blahina [Mother]sdottir) and Anglo-Celtic names.
Names for Places: Icelandic sounding names.
Notes: The Svartjufar are the hardy settlers of old Iceland. Raised to be hardy and self-sufficient, the people of the Isle of Svartjufar are distrustful of outsiders and mistrust the mass consumerism of the continent. They are loyal to their families and their polity above all else, which results in a strong current of nationalism.

Nation Name: United Provinces of Gwinushurai

National anthem (optional):
Spoiler :

Names for people (optional): A mix of Ryukyuan, Cantonese, and Hokkien. People also tend to give/have humorous or ironic nicknames.
Names for places (optional): A mix of Okinawan and Ainu in the north, and of Cantonese and Vietnamese in the south. Meanings are either quite specific but uncreative ("Town-by-a-River-near-a-Rocky-Mountain") or quite idealistic ("Paradise-of-Limitless-Love")
Notes: Gwinushurai loves black humor

Once again I'm grateful for the interest in this, thankyou very much!

I've set a deadline for any more submissions (or revisions), which you can now see on the front page. Its the evening of Saturday 20th USA time.

I've got in mind a limit of 12-14 major nations. So this is going to be hard!

I'm wondering if other players could get involved by having semi-NPC nations? They could be minor states, or powers lurking in unexplored reaches. They wont have full stats or customised armies. But I guess we can cross that bridge when we come to it.

On UU's: calling them UU's was a mistake. They should really be called 'one unit design you start with, also the technology area that you have a head start in'. You'll have opportunity to design more units every turn if you want, I want to make that clear!

Interim todo list:
* make an organised list of faction/nation ideas for each cradle
* streamline the rules
* make the game more War-Friendly... While I don't want this to be an always-war game, and I wanted to give people interesting choices/things to do in peacetime, I think I may have pushed too hard in the opposite direction when I wrote the rules originally. I think we all want to see some action ;)

@Daft I saw that someone else claimed the Chocobo rider as their unique unit already. Do you still want me to change to that, or should I pick something else? Also how realistic do you want this game to be? I realize my nation is already a little silly that I was just wondering exactly where you want the line on environmentalists sort of things.

@Frozen In Ice & SouthernKing, I'm thinking giant bird riders are just a regional cavalry variant. So please go ahead and think up another UU!

On realism vs fun/wierdness. I'll let you know when you cross that line. Basically nothing 'for the LOLS'. If its something a little eccentric and unusual, even comical to our eyes, but it works well IC and it has, I don't know, 'dignity' at the same time... Then that's cool :)

If you throw out the politics of the State its really not the State any more, so I'm going to scrap that and go with this:

@Grandkhan the only problem was pseudo-Britain being over-used as a base for geography and culture, I had no problem with the politics :) was hoping you could transplant that. But either way, I'm happy with your latest idea!

Since Switzerland's UU has taken the wind out of my sails, I will change my UU to being a regular infantry with consistently more advanced weapons than the average infantry.

Nation Name: The Troughs And Groves Of Kieran
Ideology Picks (4 max): Survivalist, Environmentalist
Government Style: Elective monarchy would have been cool, but I think I'll settle for Republic.
Start location: Northern Africa
Geography: Basically Tunis: Hills and fertile soil by the coast, desert elsewhere.
Military: Land focused
Unique Unit: Camel riders (tougher cavalry, with some sort of terrain bonus for desert)
Primary Colour: Ocre (see lower stripe of the flag)
Flag:
Spoiler :

Ethnicity (optional): RL Berber
National animal (optional): Camel
National anthem (optional):
Names for people (optional): berber names, or at least muslim sounding. Something like Samir, Munir...
Names for places (optional): Berber names, like stuff starting with “Th”
Notes: Briefly a colony of one of the more modernised nations from across the sea, following The Catastrophe whoever was still alive took refuge in the hills and lived from mountain oasis: streams born from hills, flowing through troughs filled with blooming palm trees. They struggled to keep their habitat stable and reverted to primitive democracy to avoid falling into anarchy.

EDIT: I'm happy with being a minor/semi-NPC or whatever. :)

Grandkhan, we're natural allies! Or enemies, I guess. My prehistory is all about all not-Scandinavians banding together for a common prehistory to form a progressive Viking bastion. So I'm not-Scandinavism, perhaps your out was a deliberate middle finger? Perhaps not?

Nation Name: the Isa Alembratwryh AKA the Isa Empire. The country the Isa Empire is cradled in is known as N'emh, after the great river that flows through it.
Ideology Picks (4 max): Fundamentalist, Aristocratic, Capitalist
Government Style: Monarchy
Start location: around the Suez and Nile
Geography: Much land is desert. However this is countered with the N'emh River. The great river's bank is very fertile, along for a agricultural economy to flourish. A notable man made geographical feature is the Alqnah Canal, allowing two seas seperated by landmass to be connected.
Military: high focus on mobility, with heavy emphasis on air power and infantry deployment.
Unique Unit: Ghanem Hawk, a fighter designed for battle over the desert. Named after the dynasty that funded its design.

[under construction]

If the Arabic lettering in the picture is Egyptian Arabic, it says "Al - Gana". If it was meant to say Al - qanah or Al qnah, the closest things I found in the writeup, it should be written as القنة

I was using Google translator I confess; الجنة was written in attempt for "paradise." Thank you for the aid; I will need to consider a design of the flag if need be.

@Frozen In Ice & SouthernKing, I'm thinking giant bird riders are just a regional cavalry variant. So please go ahead and think up another UU!

Battlehounds - They are as loyal and lovable as any other dog, but thanks to many years of selective breeding these hounds have been bred to be nearly as fast as a Greyhound and as strong as a Mastiff. To those who are friendly these dogs will play fetch merrily, but enemies should beware its agility and strength.

Or if you don't have an appropriate sprite for the one above...

Poisonous Riflemen - riflemen using bullets dipped in a paralyzing toxin found in a rare species of frog near the Koori.

A bullet is over 500 degrees F when leaving the muzzle of a gun. That means the toxin will most likely not be biologically active when it arrives at its target. Try using radioactive dust? Marie Curie's work was in the late 19th century so feasibly it makes sense. Though its still far-fetched.

@Ailedhoo, given that this is an alternate universe I'm not going to be picky about that. Also, the flags on the map will only be a few pixels ;) Your flag is very cool though!!

@Frozen In Ice, I'm not feeling either of those :(

Luckymoose wanted anti-tank bomb dogs, I disapprove that for the same reason I disapprove yours - you won't have war-dogs roaming alone, you'll have soldiers & war dogs. Perhaps the war dogs are a combat buff / special that you pick up, but I think its really the soldiers we're talking about ;). And poison bullets do seem a bit redundant even without what Immaculate mentioned.

How about some kind of tribal ranger infantry, adapted to the Jungle (or whatever terrain you prefer)? They can mix rifles, grenades with native know-how, using poison projectiles for silent stealth attacks, etc...

As I said, UU is probably the wrong term. You can all have aircraft carriers if you want!!
