Raliuven SG3 AWE Persia

Well I certainly had some fun. A lot of battles, a volcano erupting, a boat, the Colossus of Amsterdam, civil disorder, and an Elite archer.

TURNLOG:
Spoiler :
Turn 0, 1500 BC; Send settler north to red dot with warrior+archer escort.

IBT; Two Carthaginian warriors appear east of Antioch, one American south of Antioch.

Turn 1, 1475 BC; Pasagardae makes spearman, starts archer. Send one archer to help fight off warriors by Antioch. Send workers to Arbela to work on wines.

IBT; Two Carthaginian warriors move to outside Antioch, American goes south.

Turn 2, 1450 BC; Civil disorder in Pasagardae, make a temporary Entertainer. Veteran archer fights regular Carthaginian warrior, wins.

IBT; New Carthaginian warrior appears to east of Antioch.

Turn 3, 1425 BC; Persepolis makes archer, start curragh for exploration. Settle Gordium on red dot location, start spearman.

IBT; American regular warrior attacks veteran Archer, loses. Another Carthaginian warrior appears to east of Antioch.

Turn 4, 1400 BC; Workers road wines.

IBT; Americans want peace, told to f#ck off. Carthaginian warriors head further into Persian lands.

Turn 5, 1375 BC; Persepolis makes curragh, starts spearman. Curragh sent to explore island(?) west of Pasagardae. Workers mine wines.

IBT; Carthaginian warriors head further inland.

Turn 6, 1350 BC; Pasagardae builds archer, starts settler. Civil disorder in Persepolis, temporary entertainer placed. Veteran archer fights regular Carthaginian warrior, wins. Regular warrior fights regular Carthaginian warrior, wins (1hp left).

IBT; Regular Carthaginian warrior fights 1hp regular warrior, wins. Amsterdam makes Colossus.

Turn 7, 1325 BC; Antioch makes barracks, starts spearman. Veteran archer fights 1hp Carthaginian warrior, wins. Becomes Elite. 1 worker starts road from Arbela to Antioch, other worker sent north to Gordium. Science to 70%, writing in 6 turns.

IBT; Volcano in east erupts, kills archer :(

Turn 8, 1300 BC; Arbela makes spearman, starts settler.

IBT; zzz

Turn 9, 1275 BC; Persepolis makes spearman, starts settler.

IBT; zzz

Turn 10, 1250 BC; Worker starts road to Gordium.

I started so many settlers to ease down the population, and so that we can expand faster. There's an island to the east of Pasagardae that has room for two cities, we should settle there (not immediately, but eventually). As far as I can tell, I think Carthage is closer to us that America. They sent four warriors total, so I'm guessing they're on the other side of the mountains.

EDIT: Forgot the file. Duhhhhhhhh

Looks like a fun game.

@Toxicman007: Nothing quite like getting your first exposure to SGs by debuting in an AW game! :whew:

Scarey and fun at the same time.

But don't forget the save!

Too bad about the volcano - I gues this really is Persia agains the world!

I'll see if I can squeeze in 10 turns tonight if you would be kind enough to post the save.

There you go. Yeah, it was quite a first experience.

I had a horrible feeling about that volcano, and I think there's another one in the fog. They might cause massive problems later.

Preflight –

Units [Allowed: 20, Total: 14]

Workers: 2 (not enough)
Warriors: 2
Archers: 4
Spears: 4
Immortals: 1
Curragh: 1

I swap Arbela and Persepolis to workers; we are already working dead tiles. We need to build our core some.

I consider raising the lux to 20% to put people back to work, but neither city can work anything better than a unimproved grass. I opt to go with scientists instead, we get writing in 2t @ +4gpt. I will re-evaluate when the workers start to produce something. I don’t like to do this because it will slow growth, but I can’t see a way around it at the moment. Entertainers are almost never the answer in the beginning of the game.

Turn 71 [1225BC]

Persepolis: Worker=>Archer
Arbela: Worker=>Archer
Antioch: Spear=>Archer

Shuffle units, move spear towards Gordium to help the archer. Move scouting warrior around the volcano, Curragh up the western isle but I don’t know how far I want to go with that. The Americans must be over there. Workers move to tiles to start working.

Push science back to 70% to get writing in 1 turn @ +1gpt.

IBT – we get writing, start Phil. Make best speed, science to 100%, due in 9t @ -3gpt.
Our foreign advisor wants us to make some embassies. :crazyeye:

Apparently he is not comfortable with our brand of insanity. No thanks.

Turn 72 [1200BC]

Pasargadae: Settler=Spear

Move settler towards orange dot. Warrior continues to scout around the mountain. New workers begin to mine. Because of settler, we are down to Phil in 11t @ -3gpt. Can’t sustain this, but we’ll see how things turn out.

Worker by Arbela is on auto road. Toxicman007, please do not automate workers if the actions will extend beyond your turn set.

IBT – zzz

Turn 73 [1175BC]

Send settler with spear & archer.
Antioch receives a scientist, Phil due in 8t @ -3gpt.

IBT – American archer appears from the north.

Turn 74 [1150BC]

Persepolis: Archer=>Worker; receives a scientist

Receive treasury warning, as if I care.
And we’ve found Cartahge.

The curragh has also finished scouting the small island to our west. It has iron and looks like a nice place to visit.
Advance spear/archer/settler

Turn down science to 80%, Phil in 7t @ 0gpt.

IBT – American Archer runs away from us. Hey, come back here!

Turn 75 [1125BC]

Anticoh: Archer=>Worker

4/4 archer vs 3/3 American Archer – flawless victory.

And we’ve found America.

Swap Gordium to a barracks.

IBT – zzz

Turn 76 [1100BC]

Persepolis: Worker=>Archer
Pasargadae: Spear=>Settler
Arbela: Archer=>Archer
Antioch: Worker=>Archer

Gordium is connected via mountain road.
Settle Bactra near America. Send some archers that way as it will probably be a battleground. Start walls but could be a barracks.

Warrior sees NM in Carthage’s cities. That’s not good.

IBT – Carthage sends a warrior out to meet our warrior.

Turn 77 [1075BC]

I move our warrior deeper into Carthage territory and find their iron – can’t get there from here, though.

Our Curragh has gone as far up the west coast as I am comfortable with. Send it back south to go explore Carthage.
Pasagadae receives a scientist again.

IBT – Carthage cancels a worker action to save it from our horrible warrior!

Turn 78 [1050BC]

Move warrior deeper into Carthage, hopefully to do some pillaging.

IBT – See a Carthaginian Sword moving along the road.

Turn 79 [1025BC]

Persepolis: Archer=>Settler
Move warrior though he is trapped now and likely to die.

IBT – Carthaginian sword kills our scouting warrior.
American archer appears to the NE of Bactra.

Turn 80 [1000BC]

Antioch: Archer=>Archer (could be a settler?)

Leave units unmoved.
Phil do in 1t @ +3gpt. Bank is 13gp.

@Toxicman007: Do you have CivAssist or MapStat running on your computer? Either one would help avoid civil disorder. I use CivAssist; one of the alerts is cities that grew during the in-between-turn. I just check on those and make adjustments if any of them are about to riot.

Looks like those volcanos make blue x a better spot, and then another city 1SW of the gold.

Having a backup Iron on that island is nice. We can retreat there as our Taiwan if all goes against us.

I vote for an archer push on US cities if possible. Try to cut them back a bit.

We will need catapults soon-ish for killing Numidians.

Bactra should be connected by roads in 2 direction in 3 turns so we can move archers straight towards America. I was already sending archers that way because of where the American units were coming from. I think we've got 4 archers in the area, one of these is Toxicman007's elite archer. :D I tried to get a kill with him but the stupid American archer ran away!

**Edit** Oh, and Carthage is producing swords, so we should expect to see them to our east sometime soon. I don't like the idea of attacking a sword on a mountain either. :(

@Aabraxan, I made the curragh to explore that island. That was pretty much his only goal.
@Elephantium, no I don't, I tend to play "pure" C3C. If I probably need some add-ons for the SG, please tell me so I can use them.

I've got the save. I should be able to look at things this afternoon and possibly play then. Literature after philosophy, and then math?

CivAssist II and MapStat (which is part of the CRP Suite) are both very helpful utilities. They make game information much easier to find, and they can be found in the downloads section.

MapStat: I couldn't find a working link for this one. Anybody know where this can be found?

CivAssist II: http://forums.civfanatics.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=21

Toxicman007 - I'm like you - I don't use any assist programs. Which is not to say that is a good thing. I really should learn how to use it.

Mostly I suggest CivAssist II as a way to help avoid riots. You get a lot of efficiency by turning off the city governor, but you lose the benefit of the improved efficiency anytime a city riots.

It's not very difficult. I was skeptical of this whole utility program thing at first and then I tried it and now I swear by it.

Turn 80:
Persepolis gets a scientist. Archers move along. Worker roads.
IBT: Learn philosophy first, learn literature, start math. Arbela builds an archer and starts another one.

Turn 81:
Switch Antioch to the GL. Math in 10 at -1 gpt.
IBT: American archer advances on Bactra. Carthaginian sword and two warriors advances on Bactra. Pas. settler to archer.

Turn 82:
E archer kills Am. archer. Cover with 2 spears. Pas. settler goes north.
IBT: Warriors move toward Bactra. Sword kills spear, loses 1 hp. Persepolis settler to library.

Turn 83:
Archer redlines but kills warrior. Retreat E archer and spear back into Bactra. Persepolis settler goes to blue x.
IBT: Second sword shows up. Warrior sits there.

Turn 84:
Move along.
IBT: Swords advance.

Turn 85:
Build Sidon 2 tiles north of Gordium and Tyre at blue x. Sidon is pretty lousy, but it has an oasis and can be irrigated, and it keeps our border more reasonable. Archers kill both swords easily, but the third archer dies to the warrior without scratching it.
IBT: Carthage asks to talk. Pas. archer to archer, Arbela archer to worker.

Turn 86:
Sit tight.
IBT: NM shows up.

Turn 87:
E archer kills warrior. Cover with spear.
IBT: NM sits there. Carthage sails a boat by Tyre.

Turn 88:
Retreat back into Bactra. Move archer toward Tyre in case of landing.
IBT: Boat sails along. Persepolis library to archer.

Turn 89:
Increase lux to 20% to keep Antioch happy.
IBT: Carthaginian sword shows up. Pas. archer to spear.

Turn 90:
Leave units unmoved.

The spear in Pasargadae should go to Bactra to join a stack of archers destined to invade America. We need to leave some archers and spears in Bactra since that is where Carthage is attacking. I'd suggest 3 archers and 2 spears, so we can cover archers that move out of the town.

The spear in Sidon is a prebuild for a catapult. Math is due in 2 turns at -3 gpt.

There is a galley in the fog to our south. Our curragh is providing advance notice of American movement to the north, of which there has been none.

It looks like our next choice will be whether we go for Monarchy ASAP after math or wait until our GL gives it to us. More gold if we wait, but if we get it sooner we might be able to delay our GA until we are out of despotism. I guess catapults will help a lot if we want to delay our GA.

The GL is a long way off, and I expect that we won't get much from it anytime soon. I'd hope that the Americans were eliminated in less than 50 turns, though we might decide to leave them with 1 city so that we could get techs in two lumps from the GL - a bunch of early techs when we build it and a bunch that expire the GL when we make contact with another continent.

I think we want to head right for Monarchy, either way.

I didn't build any immortals, but I think that we ought to build a bunch to take on Carthage. They are going to be to painful to conquer with archers, though I don't think they can make any progress against us if we stick with archers. My vote is to just deal with a despotic GA.

America is not doing very well and should be easy to reduce to one city or eliminate.

I didn't build any more settlers, but we'll need to do that.

Preturn, 750 BC, 90 in game.

Change Pas to Settler

Move units
Spoiler :

IBT:

Carthaginian Sword suicides on a Spear outside Bactra. The NM moved N, and a Warrior came from the E.

Turn 1 (730 BC):

Lose eArcher to rWarrior, no damage :wallbash:
vArcher finishes off the Warrior, taking 1 damage.

Sci slider to 50%, Math still due in 1.

IBT:

Carthaginian Galley comes out of the fog near our capital.
Math > Pots

Persepolis: Archers
Bactra: Walls > Barracks

Turn 2 (710 BC):

Retreat troops back towards Bactra

IBT:

Arbela: Archer > Spear

Turn 3 (690 BC):

Gordium grew, so I check on it to prevent any riots.

IBT:

Carthage drops off a unit next to Gordium.

Turn 4 (670 BC):

Move Worker to avoid capture.
Sci slider to 20%; we only need 11 beakers over 2 turns for Pots.

IBT:

Persepolis: Archers
Pasargadae: Settler > Archer
Gordium: Barracks > Spear

Turn 5 (650 BC):

Move troops. I'm avoiding fights with the Carthaginian NMs, but they're coming deeper into our territory...

IBT:

NM attacks Bactra; Archer kills him
NM attacks Bactra, killing an Archer.
Pots > Maps

Korea completes the Oracle.

Turn 6 (630 BC):

Arbela has grown; I check on the city to prevent any riots.
Archer in Bactra takes revenge on the redlined NM.

Sci slider to 70%; Maps in 13 @ -3gpt.

IBT:

NM kills Archer in Gordium
American sword kills Spear N of Bactra and wins a promotion :(
Arbela: Spear > Archer

Aztecs complete The Pyramids.
Dutch complete the Great Wall.

Turn 7 (610 BC):

Archer kills NM next to Gordium.
Archer dies on American Sword
Archer kills American Sword

Persepolis has grown; check the city to prevent riots.

IBT:

NM comes next to Tyre.
Persepolis: Archer > Settler

Turn 8 (590 BC):

Archers kill two Spears at Boston; rSword is revealed underneath.

Bactra grew; check the city to prevent riots.

IBT:

NM ascends the mountains between Antioch and Tyre.
Americans want an audience. Um, no.

Pas: Archer > Worker

Turn 9 (570 BC):

Lose an Archer killing the NM near Antioch.
Lose an Archer at Boston.

Sardis founded near Sidon

Antioch grew; it needs 30% lux to avoid rioting. To avoid going bankrupt, that costs us two extra turns on Mapmaking research.

IBT:

Sidon: Cats

Turn 10 (550 BC):

Pasargadae grew; check city to prevent riots.

After this turnset, I agree with CKS about the despotic GA, particularly since I went after Pottery (for Granaries) and Maps (so we can settle our island) in research.
