Spain- Either you don't get any natural wonders and it feels like you're getting ripped off, or you find/settle a few early and it feels like cheating. Either way it's no fun.

I hear that.

I remember one time I found the Fountain of Youth about 10 hexes away from my first city....as Spain. I just didn't have the heart to play the rest of THAT game, ha. :D

I like Siam's ability, but since it has no UU or UB that helps it actually get those bonuses, it's kind of on the same playing field as everybody else when it comes to gaining favor of city-states.

This is actually a large part of the reason I like Siam - you have to work for their UA; but when you do so it can be extremely effective and very versatile. And both the UU and UB fit multiple strategies, making Siam a very versatile civ with the icing on the cake being that I love playing the CS game, moreso than ever in G&K.

Although like Gucumatz I love playing Maya just to try and get as many cities as possible (partly because Kabah is at the bottom of the city list...) and particularly to reach ones I've visited. And the calendar is a fantastic touch. Despite which I simply haven't found the Maya interesting enough to play in the long run, having now tried them several times. So my vote will go to Siam.

Downvote is trickier - there are a lot of civs I just don't find interesting to play and/or haven't yet tried. So I'll go with AI civs I dislike in this round at least, so Germany goes down.

My vote for this day has already been cast, but I wanted to throw in a good word for Spain. Spain is not really about the gamble of whether you start near a wonder or not; it's about exploring until you find a wonder, and then slashing your way through other civs to settle near it. Having two very good UUs makes this a lot of fun. Try playing it with that mindset, and not only is it a good civ, but it's a very fun civ.

Also, you forgot to actually increment your vote above.

I find this thread more difficult to cast votes in because I find the Civs to be generally well balanced. There's no Civ I think of as just plain sucking.

Japan Not as good as they were in vanilla, but Samurai spam in Samurai-Musketmen makes them a powerful Rennaissance force. And a Japanese force is still difficult to put down.

Egypt A subpar UU, a UB that rewards other players for taking you over...plus a UA that *also* awards other players for taking you over. Yikes.

Babylon was the reason I bought civ v on a steam sale and i love everything about that civ.
India isnt long for this world, i mean list. I like elephants and thats it. Not worth playing for my interests.

Why all the hate for Austria? Buying a complete city for 500 gold, and whatever units happens to be there, is fun for the war mongerer in all of us.

I don't care too much for Germany's ability. I don't have much use for barbarian grunts. Early in the game I like using horsemen and archers anyway.

Thanks for noticing the flaws! I've adjusted the OP for it.
And I'd prefer if people downrated civs not for the reason that they haven't bought the DLC. If you haven't got them then just don't vote on them.

I really can't stand playing against Austria. Maria's civ is so broken right now that if she isn't spanked early enough and often enough, she'll simply infest the world, metastasizing city-states like cancers until nothing's left but her sickly shade of red all over the map..

As for Spain I know I'm probably in the minority, but I just find them sexy. ;) I love the theme music, the natural wonder hunt, and the conquistadors!

Yes, this is much more difficult than the wonder elimination thread...

Rome: Easy to dominate your two nearest neighbors early, with two complementary UUs. And the UA augments a large puppet empire/any large empire.

India: More hate for India. I don't think they suck per say, but their UA, UB, and UU seem less useful than other civs. Also, I have not had much fun when they are my random draw!

With Denmark's Units and Ability making their ground units speedy and water based really doesn't work well with me.

Sweden with a few DoF's can just pump out GPs and their units are pretty good.

Austria is straight up broken, on a large map she will eventually have 24 extra cities and no CS's for anyone.

And i personally love spain, 2 good UU's that can be used to create a strong beachhead on another continent ( i lol'ed hard when i settled 5 conquistadores around an AI capital on another continent and just started rushbuying units with faith). Their UA is basically a roulette that can send you to whatever VC you roll. Mount sinai + one with nature + holy warriors = the continent is yours. And an overlooked fact about the UA, instead of normal 10 (is it 10?) happiness you get for finding all wonders she gets 20 (or whatever the double may be), that's 2 extra cities she can settle without any unhappiness problems.

Carthage, because the free harbors let you get trade routes for free and before you even need to research the tech that gives you harbors. Combine this with meritocracy and messengers of the gods and you get so much just by building new coastal cities. My favorite civ for water maps.

India, because its ability is pretty boring and not at all representative of the culture of India or its history. Population growth... because it has lots of people? It could easily have a much better ability.

Byzantium: their is nothing more satisfying than seeing your religion all over the continent without the use of missionaries.

Netherlands - I've been trying them out and I haven't been too excited by them. Their bonus is pretty nice at the start of the game, but eventually it gets hard to give away all those luxes (as in, you can barely give them away). I'm not a big fan of melee ships, and Polders are situational (though great if you get the type of land you need).

China - I find all their stuff works well together. A UU that's buffed by all the ranged unit/melee unit rebalancing in G+K, and a very nice UB. The GG buff is also well situated for a classical or medieval honor rush, and extra citadels can help defend what you acquire. Great for beelining a tech with libraries that pay you, pop up Honor and go to town on your nearest neighbor or two, then spend the rest of the game in builder mode (or just keep conquering). China isn't as good as it was at release but it is still a very well-rounded civ.

Aztecs : Basically my favorite and default civ. Decent growth bonus, Jaguars are a swell unit as long as you (get iron) / (keep them alive) and make great long-term upgrades. UA tends to get better at higher levels with more barbs and more wars. One of the few civs I'd go down Honor first.

Denmark : I don't like their ability and I don't care about their UUs. I rarely pillage, attacking from disembarking rarely comes into play, and I rarely fight around snow
