Ship of the Line still gets my up-vote for being a ocean going beast.

Took away from the Turtle Ship. I know Korea is a turtle civ and this UU fits that strategy, but I have had too many play throughs where I just sigh to myself, 'wish I had a caravel'. Exploring the seas with scouts or other melee units (which is safer now with the embarkation promotion, I have to admit) is annoying.

you should add the faith bonus for Pictish Warriors (they earn faith every time they defeat an enemy (50% of the enemy's strength is converted to faith)).

They can also fortify and get defensive bonuses in rough terrain, unlike other cavalry, but they lose all of their bonuses when they promote (Dromons do too).

Added. I think every units lose thier defensive bonuses when promoting.

Down to Dromon. I'm not doing much with navy at this point in my games. I'm usually worried about fending off AI attacks over land, not sea, in the early game. I've rarely said to myself, "if only I had more Triremes this game would have went differently". Cool looking attack, but lack of usability dooms it.

The Sea Beggar on the other hand...once the ocean is in play, I need ships. Ships that can take over other ships to use as canon fodder ? Good! Ships that can attack cities ? Yes! With two promotions for city attacks ? Very good! And it can heal in foreign waters ? Sign me up! Love the sea beggar.

To be fair, I never play with Germany (doesn't suit my style, don't like the colours, find everything boring), but it means that I find this extremely unattractive as a special unit.

Slingers? Love them. One of my fave units for one of my fave civs. I love stationing them as a border patrol and harass attackers as they press towards the capital. I have had great success using this harrying strategy, with the attackers melee-ers just pushing me back into more cover.

Thanks a lot :goodjob:

Can't believe in my last vote I left out the main point of my entire argument for upvoting Sea Beggars, which whyidie pointed out: the Sea Beggar is a Privateer replacement. You don't need to build any naval units (other than Work Boats) as the Dutch until Navigation because the Beggar will convert any ship it captures, AND it keeps Prize Ships after it upgrades. Amassing a sizable fleet and attaining naval superiority is so easy for the Netherlands.

I gave the Safari my down vote this time. I usually try for a culture win as Ethiopia, and therefore I rarely build them. The 20% bonus from the UA is usually enough to hold off any attackers, and if the Safari's not near Addis Ababa, it's pretty much just another unit with Drill I... which my units usually all have by this point anyway. I don't know, it just seems a bit meh to me.

B17 - bombers are OP anyway, so B17 isn't big difference.
HA - quick logistic and swarm = conquest of world.

Finally added a final ranking in the OP(almost forgot ). Zero and Maori Warrior are dead. Does the War Chariot will be next? Or maybe the Slinger?

The Cho Ko Nu is a crossbowman which can attack two times. That not only means two attacks, but also 2x the experience every turn. A Cho Ko Nu can become a two shot 3 range medieval artillery twice as fast as a Longbowman.

The Turtle Ship is just silly. Research Astronomy and not get the Astronomy effect of exploring oceans for your new ship. Maybe if it was available earlier (like at Optics) it might be a nice UU.

I feel like many people haven't tried out the War Chariot/Turtle Ships post Gods and Kings. Turtle Ships appear early enough and easily enough to be the Battering Rams of their era. The no sea restriction is a drawback to prevent them from being too powerful atm. They are still pretty OP though - War Chariots are super fast mobile composite archers that are cheap to build. Obviously it will depend on the terrain - but if its flat (on multi) and sp it has become a much better unit.

I suggest to try them out again!

Tercio: Given the fact that tercio's can now be upgraded from longswords they are far more important. The extra 50% combat bonus against cav makes them a stronger pike, and the only other melee unit stronger in its era is the Musketeer.

Hoplite: Far too early for a unit with such little reward. If they had some sort of bonus promotion, all their was a way to quickly get some out then maybey I would consider using them more often.

While Inca are my favorite Civ, I've yet to see how the slinger is really all that much better than the regular archer. The retreat ability? I'm pretty sure that's just a legend.

Foreign Legion: who doesn't want a bonus for attacking in enemy territory?
SLinger: I like to play with the incas, but your early ranged units should never be in position to be meleed anyway so this ability is rather pointless.

the camel Archer is like the Keshik except they have higher damage, but lose some movement. even with it's decreased movement it's still pretty good.

The Norwegian Ski Infantry is to situational. Unless you are fighting on tundra they are just like riflemen, and i never found it useful except in a few cases.

My vote for the carolean wasn't counted.

Mohawk Warrior: Nice versatile unit for two reasons. Bonus in jungle and forests mean you can use to defend the forest heavy lands of the Iroquois, and offensively by building a ton and rushing someone without the iron requirement.

Battering Ram: Knocking this down because of how overpowered the ram + horse archer combo is. It wouldn't bother me so much if horse archers required horses, or if the battering ram couldn't take cities, but any unit that can take a city single handedly in two hits is counter productive to the great city defense system that fire-axis made. Can't attack other units? No problem. Without the need for horses, just make 5 horse archers and easily take out any units that get near it. They also don't count as actual horses, so spear-men that should be effective, are just like normal melee units now. 300% city attack bonus is nuts, and the extra ranged bonus just solidifies it as being too powerful. The AI can't use it properly, but in multiplayer, spawning next to the huns means good game.

I hardly even build War Chariots. Too early, doesn't synergize with Egypt's playstyle, and loses its bonuses upon upgrade. Meh all around.

B17's, on the other hand, make America worth playing. They're awesome, especially because you can build them and upgrade them even after unlocking Stealth.

(The post above mine has incorrect numbers; my numbers on the other hand are accurate.)

War Chariot: Okay on flat maps, but even then it is not markedly better than the chariot archer that it replaces.

Jaguar: +33% forest/jungle bonus, double movement through forest/jungle, and the crown of them all, +25 HP per kill. That +25 allows much more aggressive attacking, as your units will need less turns to heal, and you can get away with putting them into more dangerous positions because units that would normally be down to ~50 will now be at a much less vulnerable 75.

Once I get swordsman, I keep building them as jaguar's and upgrading them :p Builds significantly quicker and gets great promotions. Well worth the gold.

+: Slinger. I understand the reasoning someone gave in rebuttal to why I like them, but they work for MY playing style really well. Small military of slingers stationed at outer perimeter of mountains absorbing and falling back when attacked, harrying all the way.

-: Immortal. I hate the Persians (to play as and to play against), and the Immortal has never inspired me.

Haha, I was just disagreeing because the "falling back" never seems to work. ;)
