The Problem of Barbarians

I just got here back-tracking from 'traffic sources' on Historian on the Edge. Sorry if posting was a bit mischievous but I am very flattered that you are discussing my work. Thanks for showing such interest in it. I think that's all there is for me to say.
All the best.

Yeah, I remember that. Was that what necessitated the change of blog title, or did that happen because of something else?

The reason I reposted the article here was more out of a desire to highlight the part relevant to "barbarians" and explanations for the demise of the WRE than to bring, er, accusations against certain British academics. :shifty: If you want me to replace it with an edited version to leave things out, I'd be happy to do so.

Which change? 'To Historian on the Edge' from 'Guy Halsall's Transformations of the Year 600 Blog'? That predated all that malarkey and was because I wanted to try to reduce Google hits via 'Guy Halsall' (not that that worked) and it was a rubbish name for a blog anyway. It was suggested by a reader. Or the change of subtitle? The current subtitle is a bit of mockery of this blog, which irritates me. I used to change the title a lot on a whim, for a laugh (as with 'Never Knowingly Written by a Syrian Lesbian' or whatever it was after that fake 'Gay Girl in Damascus' Blog was exposed, or 'Like Seeing the Yeti', which was how an Art History post-grad described hearing one of my papers [seeing an Anglo-Saxonist interested in thinking is like seeing the Yeti; you've heard of it but you don't think it exists]). But I kind of like the current version and have got used to it.

No - it's cool. I quite like the idea that the original version is still out there! I am still toying with re-posting the one I was pressured into removing, but with names changed etc. We'll see. The whole business was a bit depressing...:(

Wow. Quite momentous day(s) in the history of.. "World History" :D

The Great Migration Period is something one have to really understand before going about examining all of the other different barbarians that were involved in the utter destruction of the western part of the Roman Empire, and the late Han Dynasty.

This map illustrate a decent picture, if one do believe in the assumption that all of it started somewhere in Central Asia.

I endorse this post in every aspect. Now if people like [me] actually understood how history works, we wouldn't have this problem.

Well, that has got to be the most provocative moderator action I've ever seen.

Plotinus was worried that there was a clique forming on this board? The mods are in it too now.
