I think you guys are underestimating just what Shaka does. He's not like other AIs, in that they usually only expand within reason, give peace a chance, and leave wide holes in their strategy. Shaka does two things: expand like he doesn't give a sh*t, and build an army because he wants to take your sh*t, and that army moves faster, flanks harder, and is highly resistant to ranged attacks. Maybe if I try the game again from turn 0, he might make different decisions, and that might result in a different outcome, but the cards were just not in my favor this time.

yes Shaka is a beast, but come on. You can't just sit there with one city, one defender, building peaceful stuff and expect to succeed with that plan.

which is why you had to BLOCK instead of killing his settlers.
You can't help it if he settles on your front door... but try not to let him in the back gate. Your capitol is very well placed, I'm sure you would've held him off if you didn't let those settlers surround your capitol.

Why do you only have 3 military units at most at your capital?

Not even my first deity attempt went badly as yours.

At least i had an army to beat up two AIs going at me I was sandwiched by egypt and russia.

Shaka's just throwing 13 units at you.

1 warrior
1 swordmen.

I had to fend for myself with 15 units against 40+

Your biggest failing is neglecting military when you spawned next to Shaka, in fact it looks like you got Shakalizied. xD

And remember next time, even your military units can block shaka settlers from settling around your capital because you're busy with military execrises in neutral lands and he only can stare at you if he don't want to declare war right away.

And in first screenshot i see you're building writer's guild not warrior, I am unhappy. A warrior is better than a writer's guild unless the guild can train you armies of writers with lethal pens that inflicts mortal wounds by writing treatises upon impis on what they can do and what they cannot do upon you.

Next time, build soldiers.
