Civilization 5 - Game of the Month Training Series Game 95
\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\//////////////////////////////////////////

Welcome to the Ninety-fifth game in the GOTM V Training Series! There are plenty of features in Civilization 5 Brave New World to explore and the Training Series games will allow new and old GOTM fans to try out these features in a friendly environment. You are all encouraged to post your questions, stories, advice, tricks and failures in the dedicated game threads described below. You can read more about the GOTM and Training Series concept in this thread. Before going into the details of this game, we would like to ask you to abide to our most sacred rule: don’t replay any turns. If you make a mistake, accept it and try to recover. It's better to do the bad moves in the Training Series instead of in the actual GOTM competition, once it starts.

Please note: If you wish to make a video of your game, please do not post any links to it until after the game submission date has passed. This is because of the potential spoilers that are created by posting before the end date. Thank you for your cooperation.

Intentional use of the Science Overflow Bug is banned. Its use will result in your game being disqualified for results.

In this game, the designated VC is Domination. All VCs are enabled but results will be published by fastest Domination victory turn.

In this game you will play as Ashurbanipal and lead the Assyrian Empire to victory. It's a standard-sized Pangaea map played at Deity difficulty and at standard pace. Domination is the designated VC for this game, all victory conditions are enabled. You will have until November 2nd to complete the game and submit.

Civ V BNW - TSG95 Game Settings:
Playable Civ: Ashurbanipal - Assyria
Number of AI Opponents: 8
Number of City-States: 16
Map type: Pangaea
Map Size: Standard
Difficulty Level: Deity
Game pace: Standard
Game options: Quick Combat is disabled. (You may turn it on using the game options menu at any time during gameplay.)
Game Version: This game was created in Civ5 Brave New World version 1.0.3.144. DLC is required for this game. You must have Mongolia, Wonders of the Ancient World, Gods & Kings and Brave New World.

In this game, you will be playing as The Assyrians, you possess Treasures of Nineveh. When a city is conquered, gain a free Technology already discovered by its owner. Gaining a city through a trade deal does not count, and it can only happen once per enemy city.

You can train the Siege Tower, it replaces the Catapult. The Siege Tower is a powerful melee siege unit that grants a city attack bonus to nearby units when next to an enemy city. Complement a Siege Tower with melee or ranged units and make sure it reaches its target before getting killed and cities will fall much more quickly. The Siege Tower requires that you discover the technology of Mathematics and you do not need a resource to build them.

You can also build the Royal Library, it replaces the Library. The Royal Library provides +1 science for every two citizens in this city and also has a slot for a Great Work of Writing. When filled with a Great Work, it provides extra experience points to units trained in the city. The Royal Library requires that you discover the technology of Writing and you do not need a resource to build them.

This is where you will start:

Information about threads associated with TSG
TSG Announcement thread (this one). This thread is used to announce the game and clarify the settings and rules (don’t be afraid to ask questions). It’s also used to discuss the game before you start, and post problems with opening the save. Please don’t post any information from a game you have started. Instead use the next thread.

Opening Actions thread. This thread is used to discuss the game once it's on the way. There are no reading or posting restrictions as such (apart from normal decency), although we encourage players to use the spoiler tags for screenshots. Here you can post questions related to the game and share your achievements/anger/frustration/victories while you play. During the time the game is active, please do not post any information concerning the game outside of the spoiler threads including screen shots, videos, or recorded/live-cast Let's Plays on other websites.

After Actions thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state (preferably in the post title) your victory date and score, as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory! We will create a separate thread with the results at the end of the one month submission period (sorted by date and score). Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences. The game will not be closed as such, but after one month, the results will be compiled, and will not necessarily be updated with reports coming in after the finish date.

File Upload System
We now have a game file upload system you can find here. Please use it to upload your completed first attempt by saving the game on the turn after your victory or defeat. (by using the "lemme play one more turn" feature) Please note, you must submit your game on the turn following Victory. If you continue to play, the game overwrites the data and your submission could be rejected by the submission system.

This game runs for a month and ends Sunday, 2 November 2014.

The save will be available for download on 1 October 2014, midnight Central Daylight time (UTC -6:00) in the US.
The Save can be found here.

amazing starting position.. I probably settle right away unless warrior finds something interesting. would prefer to have a cargo ship and naval access - I don't think I would need an observatory.

There are 8 opponents, so 9 civs total?

Loving the start location, will also settle in place. Thinking of some early domination ramping me up to a science victory

Edit: also faith from quarries? Not used that or for ages. Mausoleum? I think with this start it's well achievable

Why would you be going for a science victory when the designated vc is domination?

With this start I too would settle in place. I'd grab mining first and try to steal a worker fairly quickly. Then beeline to the UU. With this UU and a bunch of archers/composites, it should be fairly easy to start taking capitals. The UU is stronger than the catapult it replaces, plus it's a melee unit so it can capture the cities and it does get the same +200% bonus vs cities that catapults do. With a strength of 12 the siege tower is slightly stronger than spearmen and only a little weaker than swordsmen and pikemen. That means it has a 36 strength vs cities by itself. Add in the extra 50% bonus from having 2 of them next to a city and it's more like 42 strength (at least I think they give the bonus to other siege towers). Plus there's the 50% bonus boosts archers to 10.5 ranged strength vs cities.

Haha I guess because I didn't read it properly!

Yeah assyria are pretty crazy for domination, I remember there being a lot of talk about them gettin nerfed. Its weird though cos in the AIs hands they are really weak generally.

With their UA and UU there's a good chance you wouldn't need NC if capitals are capturable with crossbow+ST. Therefore going 3 scouts is probably a good idea to see if you would need more than crossbow tech.
I wonder if it would be a good idea to research cheap techs in order to avoid getting them as the free one.

Yeah, if Sailing/Optics was 1 turn then I guess so.

Man, what a start. Personally, I can't pass up such a good opportunity to build the Mauseleom of Halicarnassus. I think it's an interesting testing situation.

What I'm considering is something like:

Build: Scout, Scout, Settler (2 pop), Shrine + Granary (in some order), Mausoleum (ideally starting right as Marble gets hooked up)
while teching
Tech: Mining, Pottery, Masonry
Tradition for policies

Stealing Workers ASAP

Early shrine and earth mother looks attractive. :):)

My plan is 3-city tradition.
● Tech order: Pottery - Animal Husbandry - Mining
● Build order: Scout - Scout - Shrine - (Worker unless lucky) - Settler (at pop 3 or 4?)
● Exp 1: Shrine - Granary - Library

What do you think of my plan?

Why do I think this start is too good? There has got be a catch. Like massive mountain ranges.

Man Deity domination. And with an early rush. I am dead before I even start. I won't last even 50 turns.:D

Why the shrine? It's unlikely we will get a pantheon. Should we not focus on growth and production to spam units? Is shrine too much of a risk?

So is it early war or turtle to artillery? For those going early, any tips? Will try a practice before I take the plunge!

Early mostly depends on map layout. However Assyria is a civ that thrives on going to war early to make use of the UA.

You can try a CB rush followed by CB + ST and finally XB + ST. If your scouts reveal impossible terrain you will have to consider making the NC to reach artillery later in the game.

For policies, early full on conquest asks for either liberty or monarchy + honor in my opinion.

In my practice attempts I built a shrine and didn't have any problem getting Earth Mother pantheon for the +1 faith per salt, copper and iron. Yes, the faith from quarries is +2, but Earth Mother means I start getting the faith rolling even without having the mines finished. If there happens to be nearby iron as well, that's more tiles with faith.

Early rush is going to be hard. By the time I had some siege towers the AIs already had composites and got swords shortly thereafter. Plus I wasn't able to capture any workers, because they were all too well guarded.

You guys are right, I quick tried 3-4 times and the pantheon is totally doable building shrine first. I guess in my usual BO the pantheon comes after the granary. Thanks!

I would consider worker+mining first start here. then you can chop whatever you want an have imba salt hexes.
It would be good to know if there is any civ near, cause in that case 2scout start would be better with worker steal. But you only know if you build scouts :) Catch 22...

My current practice game I've turtled it but have a city spamming Poland bordering me. Taking cities isn't a big problem, it's keeping them that's the issue. How to stay happy? I'm -7 with a 13 pop about to fall... I don't really want to pause too long to raze.
