The Immortal Challenge Lineup - Game #17 Venice

Turn 390 Domination

Edit: On a side note that I forgot... The dominant Religion is a dead Religion and I could not make it the World Religion lol!

Spoiler :
Those Mountains couldn't stop 6 Nukes and Paratroopers. I just researched Nano too! Anyways I was kinda upset at the Zulu for building Big Ben so they had to pay! The mini map is almost all purple and it is funny to make Venice Rule the World through Domination!

Not too many players posting up a finish in this game huh? I am sure we will get a few stragglers at the end before the next ICL. I found this game interesting and fun. You have a lot of choices on how to play your game. I for one did not like the idea of playing peaceful and hope that I could defend my land. I found Domination to be interesting because I only had one city to build and buy units. I also never generated so many MoVs... I even faith bought 3 bringing the total to 6 for the game which I converted 3 CS's and used the last 3 for 4000 gold Trade Missions. The main problem was the CS's in this game did not build as many units compared to the Austria game. However my first CS gave me a good amount of Xbows so that was nice!

Anyways... let's get down to the Nitty Gritty! I have been actually rolling maps and trying to find a better set up instead of just throwing up any old map. Usually it only takes about 15-20 turns to realize the map is not going to work for me. I also decided on one of the most hated Civs to play for the Next ICL which is the Iroquois. I found in the thread I started called "Worst Civ in the Game" that most players do not like to play this Civ and find the UU/UA/UB useless. So we have to play them one of these days and I thought it would be interesting to see how people will use them on Immortal since this will be the first ICL game that I post. Usually I roll a map on Deity for myself and have no problems with it. I never hardly get close NWs or large amounts of open land but that keeps happening to me when I roll an Iroquois map recently kinda pi**ing me off pretty good but I am sure I will find something decent before the 27th and then it will be my turn to get the backlash from players about how easy the map is and how this Civ/Map sucks and how I should never host again LOL!!

FA - I dont think too many players are familiar with Venice and this map is a little harder because of picked opponents and also
Spoiler :
Venice is ultimately locked out of ocean trade routes. This is something I did not intend to happen, but did not scout long enough to discover.

It's ok! Most players are not going to like this map that I just rolled with the Iroquois! I know I really don't like the map myself which is why I am going to go with it. As always you have pros and cons on any map. I am going to make some OPTIONAL challenges for this map as well. The first will be you must go Full Piety before any other Social Policy and are not allowed to get into Trad/Liberty. That is optional and any player that plays does not have to follow such a rule/challenge. I think this map will take much longer for Domination compared to any other VC so that will be the other OPTIONAL challenge as well!

I played up to turn 20 and saved the game and will continue once I post up the map.

About the spoiler that you just posted. I think that is a good thing because if you had a lot of those it would make the game too easy and it is supposed to be a challenge since the name of this thread begs for it... Immortal CHALLENGE Series. Of course better players can argue that Immortal is never a challenge but I would say some maps are more so than others.

Spoiler :
I moved to the hill and settled a decent spot for my cap. I went Tradition and planning usual 4 cities unless happiness could allow me to grab one or two more later.
I MoV'd Colombo when it had 7 pop and the units and worker were useful. Colombo also had a market and spec and it wasn't long before I could MoV Jerusalem. I didn't MoV Kiev yet since we were still quite friendly and I wanted the culture.

Once I had another MoV, then I took Kiev and sent food cargos back and forth. Food caravans were also going to Venice and to some other expos.

I built Colossus and Petra in Venice and then quickly a temple, but still missed out on a religion, soon this cost me my pantheon and 5 pp/t from my fishing.

Oxford radio and got my Ideology first on t203 (too slow) and took Freedom for specialist enhancement. I had many spec's but Jerusalem never seemed to want to make many if any science spec's.

I planted all GWAM hoping for some tourism so as not to suffer huge from other ideologies. I still had a tough time with :) as time progressed more into the 200's. Egypt was a monster of culture with many wonders and a total nuisance.

Unlike others I left France alone, but had to pay many times to keep Nappy and the other two idiots to my west at war.

T242 and denouncements and DOW's from Shaka and Ramses. Shaka had other issues and couldn't get to me and the war meant that I could clean out a couple cites Ramses had built between me and Sweden.

I managed to time the policy to buy space ship parts nicely after finishing Rati for that free tech. My final space tech was done just several turns after so I had only to wait those turns to finish the space ship.

At the end, Venice was pop 52. It would've been bigger had I managed :) a bit better (should've bought a zoo or two, but was afraid it might not help or I might need the cash for defense.) I didn't try to ally Belgrade for food cargos as even once I had finished Commerce and had no more :) issues, I didn't think I could hold that spot from the 3 hostiles to my west.

In preparation for the coming Iroquois game, I'll start a game with them and try to get used to them. .. neilkaz ..

Bah, I screwed so many things up on this game.
Spoiler :
I settled W side of the river coast, stole a Worker from Nappy, and 2 from Colombo, and since I went Liberty I got a free one, I may have built/bought some too - all I know is I deleted a couple before t100! Got DF pantheon and knew I wanted Petra, but I had no culture to get the Liberty finisher (opened Tradition as so many Liberty players do it with a culture ruin - never again!), so I went for Drama to get a Guild up, but only built an Amphi. Got my 1st Cargo Ship started, but finally teched Philosophy (Drama was a total waste) and started Oracle. Egypt beat me to it by 2 turns, and then got Petra the next turn just as I started it.

I dislike playing Venice unless I can get some good synergies, which I do not have this game. I did a trade mission to Jerusalem with my 1st MoV, I puppeted Kiev with the 2nd and it only had a Shrine - sheesh! It's t105 and I don't even have NC - like I said, I screwed up so many things here.

Two screenshots. 2 turns before I am about to win world leader vote, the Venetian Republic is a thriving polity in a 70-something turn Golden Age. Surprise-surprise, Shaka and Gustavus decide they've had enough of me. But I won anyway.

Original plan for diplomatic victory compromised by various map factors.

Spoiler :
Location of Venice was very difficult for setting up sea-trades or naval warfare. Once I bought CS access to the Great S Sea things improved (rolling in money!), but it was a slow start. Conquered largely with frigates, although France with GW was a tricky land-based campaign.
