"Interesting Deity Start" Series

The start is a good start but what I like about it is it gives me a choice of moving to the desert. In my mind I am thinking this start is too good to move and maybe you want to get your expo with the desert and try for Petra but you could also move and try to settle your expo back at the start. That is what I enjoy. Some interesting choices right from the get go to make me kinda have to make a decision between the two. Hopefully we will be able to compare games. Shark Diver usually plays these out as well but he is busy with RL right now. After I finish my ACW 2 China Immortal game I will have to give this a go. After that it is back to ACW 3 Ethiopia and by that time I will be posting the ICL 18 game and of course by that time it will be time for DCL 22. This is getting to be a chore eh??

Mtn, river, hill, coast is great. the only thing i dont like is the multi-tech needs for tile improvement. but theres no way i'd move from that with Songhai Ottomans.

edit: thanks for noticing Fluphen. fixed to Ottomans

Well, I'm a regular on DCL, occasional ICL and I know my limits so no ACWs here

I think you would be surprised at how easy that ACW 2 China game is. I just wrapped it up with a 335 Dom V but I wasn't even trying. I suspect top players could finish before 250 and as I have seen many times maybe, even before 200.

I know you meant the Ottomans and your right it is a really strong start but sometimes I like to experiment going against the grain. Of course after you posted this comment your inside my brain now and it is going to be very tough to move lol!

Turn 0-100

Spoiler :
I think we can clarify this map under the category of "Interesting"... at least for me anyway! Oh no Espionage huh, just noticed that after 100 turns. That is going to hurt me for sure!

Another cramped start and as usual... spread myself too thin not finding great locations for my cities but it seems to be ok for my style. I had to delay the NC since I decided on Oracle and Hanging Gardens since all these Empires went Liberty or Piety First. I couldn't believe that every Civ I found is into Liberty. So no Pyramids but HG is nice. I might of even been able to pull the ToA off if I would of been aggressive to go after it right from the start.

As usual I play with no plan and just basically all over the place with no sense of direction. I have rush bought a lot this game. I first Rush Bought two Archers to clear a Barb camp since 2 Cult CS's requested it be cleared! I was curious about the theme and if we were supposed to play for more of a Historical Approach so if you get a chance to enlighten us on the History of these Civs or perhaps you can direct me to a site that has this information that you keep reading over and over.

As I was building the HG, I got a lot of loan gold from my DOFs... Austria, Poland, and Kahn! With this gold I bought a Water Mill first, Granary next and Work Boat after that. I wish I would not of wasted 3 turns to see if I had Iron on the map but I like to try because that can be a lot of extra gpt early on. I stunted growth because happy could not provide it and 3 cities this early kinda hurt without a lot of extra luxes or luxes to buy from the AI this early.

I am pressing for a Religion as you can see I have 199 faith with only 1 Religion to go! I hope I can get it but I fear the AI will get it 1 turn before me as usual!. I wanted to try for Religion so I built Shrines first in my expos and made it a priority in the Capital. I decided to play safe and go with Tradition since I lost my last Deity game :(. Also with the Observatories I think Tradition is better to get that extra spt.

B.O. Capital : Scout, Monument, Shirne, 2x Settler, Library, Caravan, (Rush Bought Water Mill, Granary, Work Boat), Oracle (81), HG (96), NC

SPs: Full Trad, Opened Patronage

Religion: Praying to the Lord that I get my own!

Edit: Turn 101-200

Spoiler :
I am boxed in and it is too late to really do anything special not that I can ever do anything special in my games. At least the game is fast and I like the tension of only having two Archers on turn 200! I could get rolled at any moment but it seems all Civs love me and I had to not accept a DOF from France since they are not well liked. I have DOFs with everyone else and RAs in the works going to start cascading in on turn 209. I didn't do anything special. Sistine Chapel (146), PT (169). I built Grand Temple, IW, and trying to get EIC which will most likely be after Eiffel. I have been rush buying things like Workshops, Public Schools, Caravans and Observatories.

William is sorta a Liberty Expanding Beast and it seems France has destroyed Maria pretty good but she is still alive. I didn't scout much but you can see some of the Orange Blob in the mini-map. I would like to start a war later against William if I can get Poland to help since William has the better Wonders. Basically like most of my games I try to wait for Rocket Artillery, Nukes, and Paratroopers. I did manage to get the last Religion which is nice but the Heathen Buddhist Community is strangling my Jewish people! The picture below shows my Religious choices but I have bought Monasteries instead since they are cheaper and I most likely will save the rest of the faith for a GS or two.

I wanted Freedom but Poland usually goes Order in my games and I do not want to upset him so I chose Order which I was first to Ideology around turn 180-190.
I went with Hero of the People and Socialist Realism.

Edit: Turn 201-265

Spoiler :
This is turning out to be a pretty fun game/map. I found it a more difficult start and after researching satellites it seems to be more on the difficult side for me. I really got painted in this corner and William was starting to threaten for a CV so I decided to do some horrible things to the AI lol! First William offered me a DOF after not accepting for some time because he is in Autocracy and I am in Order. Anyways I was pretty happy when he DOFed me because I planned to back stab him hard after some turns. Of course I messed up a few large loans to the wrong Civ. The whole point of a back stab is to take the AIs gold for gpt and get it almost for free. However, I did get some large deals with him and after I got 3 out of the 4 nearby CS Allies I decided to back stab him but not before I did the same thing to Mongolia lol! Desperate times call for Desperate measures. I don't have a very large Army but it is effective for the time being and I took down one city and sold it to my DOF Germany who is also at war with Amsterdam! I am trying to build Hubble and capture some more cities on my way to the Capital. I need a break and will finish in the next day or two.

Well I played the Ottoman game somewhat...
(for those who wonder if I pre-play the maps to settle in somewhat strange spots, well here's your evidence)

How late is too late to settle? Well if it nets you mountain river and granary goods plus salt, I'd say this late is still OK (after wandering in the wilderness like Moses) just watch out for barbs and steal a worker along the way.

And OCC NC is done without any issue, at a turn time where most people would get it from settling in place  For one thing: maritime CSs help, another thing, getting routes very early also helped. Lastly, you got so many more ruins from wandering around without waiting for that first scout. This underscores the importance of good early game dirt (granary goods and forest chop)

A normal empire, you wouldn't suspect I settled as late as t23!
I'm sure anyone can play from this and get easy SV at least...

in the late 17th century, an army of around 200-300k Jannisaries started their march from Belgrade determined to take down Vienna. Suleiman himself tried to capture Vienna some 150 years ago but horrible weather demoralized his troops so he had to retreat. During his retreat the weather increased to 11 as in, heavy snow storms and stuff.

Anyway this army laid siege to Vienna for a whole month, picking off weak spots in the city fortifications, digging tunnels etc. Viennese held but after a month they were on the ropes. Salvation finally came when Jan Sobieski assembled the largest cavalry force the world has ever seen. Led by the monstrous Winged Hussars, this (obviously) real world Battle of Helm's Deep remains one of the most impressive history moments in my book.

The theme is thus obvious, as the dreaded Ottomans, your grand prize obviously is the voluptuous city far in the west. I have made some effort to have the civs positioned so that there might be some resemblance to real world neighborhoods and alliances (Mongols fought on the side of Ottomans), and a fun thing I read about the whole thing, the famed Sun King flat out refused to help out his fellow Christians.

and yes, no Espionage is the "unique" perk I thought a lot about whether to include or not

First Off... I never thought you reloaded any map to be able to settle in a better location. Secondly... Turn 23 Settle on Deity!! This has to be a personal record of longest turn time to settle your Capital on Deity... no??? Very interested to see how your game goes compared to mine. You really changed the Dynamic of the game with this long journey to settle!! I think my game is at about 70% chance of a loss in my current situation but it is now time to try to finish so I will let you know asap!

@ stormtrooper412

Spoiler :
Thanks for the History behind this game!! I enjoy history and especially history of how countries react to war. I didn't realize that trying to capture Vienna was the theme! Now I understand what you were saying about the "prize" in the OP. I'll say one thing about my play though is that I have never seen William be such a Powerhouse! He is playing like the Huns or Zulu Nation in my game!!

Edit: Turn 297 Resigned

Spoiler :
Back to back losses and back to back IDS losses :( ! Fun game but I got a bit sloppy with my Nukes and nuked my allies Ormus and Germany causing me more trouble and since Sweden has 3 parts up it is most likely Mission Impossible to get to him in time. So I don't have to play down to the Defeat Screen every time but if I hadn't nuked Germany I probably would of kept going :) ! At the very least I stopped William from winning and he was very close to a CV and still is sorta. Fun map and game. I did not have near as much fun as the DCL 21 India game but this game frustrated me enough to be in my top ten! I think my troops were demoralized because of the inclement weather :) !!

I don't know anymore what the number 8 game is. What does it mean 'go along with the series' ?

I don't know anymore what the number 8 game is. What does it mean 'go along with the series' ?

It only refers to the Chronological Order of the series. When this thread was created... Shark Diver wanted to keep it all in one thread instead of listing the games as 1,2,3 on individual threads in hopes that older games would not get lost. However, since this thread does not get many players actually playing out the games it might be better to change it to the format that all other series's follow posting up one thread per map.

Since you posted the map, unsure of if it belonged here, I was just replying to your map and statement. I was saying since you didn't list it as #9 in the series, since # 8 was just posted a few days ago if you look back in the thread by stormtrooper412, that I see no problem with you posting up an IDS map that doesn't follow the Chronological Order of the thread and it is still eligible to be mixed in with the DCL Leaderboard.

Sorry, I'm totally confused :(

I thought this thread was kinda for 'spare' maps that people could play in between DCLs, no?

Anyway you're saying it's eligible. I understand that part. I'll play on...

I can understand the confusion. If you go back and skim through the whole thread you will notice that maps are posted in a numbered order with a few exceptions. It is true that this thread is open to all maps and Interesting Deity Starts but the few of us actually posting and playing on this thread have followed some sort of order and usually when we post up a map we number it in the series, which is why I track all stats from IDS # 7 Rome on up and not prior. If you get the time to edit your post, perhaps you can list it as IDS # 9 Byzantium and list things like map type, stand/stand, Deity, No Barbs, No Ruins... etc. This will help to keep some order and help tracking stats as well. Basically this thread is the same as the DCL thread but we have no host and this thread has less player support but the maps are more difficult in general.

Ah, looks like you've made this thread a bit more formal. No offence, but I'm really put off from being involved in the posting of maps in any kind of formal situation, after my experiences in the DCL. I'll take the map down.

I do not take any offense on these boards that are meaningless compared to Real World Scenarios. I am sad to see you remove your map/post though. I most likely would of gotten around to playing it out since I have lost my last two Deity SP games. My comments were not to suggest to take down the map. My comments were not to demand that all maps need to be numbered in order for this series. Although, numbering does help to keep things a little cleaner... it is not required.

I can understand you not wanting to participate in something that you feel is formal and somewhat mirrors the DCL Series. However you did just post up a map on the ACW Deity Series (# 3 Ethiopia) and had no problem numbering it and listing the rules/requirements of the nature of the series. I suppose you just wanted a thread to post up any map and let people enjoy it without any type of formality involved which I can appreciate and a player can always post up any map starting a new thread. I think the only suggestion from the DCL was that we should not title it as a Challenge but we could always make a thread for more of a "sandbox" type of atmosphere.

Yeah, actually, I kinda regret posting the Ethiopia map now. It's just that, at that time, the OP of the 'series' had not posted a Deity one. I really can't play on Immortal anymore unless it's a really interesting map.

I just didn't realise this series had become formal. I think I'll go back and play 1/2 more of the old challenges and see if I can get to the top of the Finisher's spreadsheet. Not sure the Theo map is as interesting as I'd hoped anyway.

yeah too late I already downloaded it, joke is on you etc :p

just kidding, I really want to check it out when I get back from work today

Actually... I must of been on autopilot as well and downloaded it. I just realized that it is sitting here on my desktop waiting to be dropped into Sid's folder.

yeah, with the weekend coming, I'll playtest this one, as well as the England map posted in the other topic

edit: but all bets are off once the Brazil DCL rolls in innit
