Term 3. Welcome to the Foreign Ministry.

Well thats exactly the kind of opponent you'd want to face in the finals.

Great!

We will discuss your scouting inquiry, even though there is not much to find. We would advise against wasting the time of your scout, that's why we advised to stop earlier as well.

Another issue concerning our trade considers the Sailing technology. We believe this to be vital for our cities to actually engage in inter-cultural trade and that it should be researched as quick as possible.

the first part blatantly concerns them not wanting us to scope out their land but should we inform them we already have sailing?

i think we should and maybe bring up the discussion of alphabet.

Lets just enter their territory and when they say WTF we will appologise for missreading their response.

They are not being up front now. Telling us they don't want us to cross the border to spare us the boredom of exploring their land is one for the BS hall of fame.

But if you think it would help we can be totally honest and say that we want to cross the border so we can scout their land and meet the civs on the other side. They said they want good relations and this is how to get them.

I hope they don't make us waste another turn by delaying their response.

Does anybody else get the feeling that we are too nice?

Continually accepting this ridiculous treatment with please and thank you build both a habit and a reputation for passivity that will be increasingly hard to overcome.

Say that we'll need it when we discover trading to get the trade route, that we're not out to scout their land.

Because we should only be tough when needs be, the trivial matter of a warrior going into a territory is hardly the 'situation' it needs be, we pander to there needs and wait for them to tell us otherwise, we shall of course return the treatment when they arrive near our borders.

well we dont allow theres through if they dont let ours through that need to be relayed to them. We do need to keep a eye on them...now. Friends woudlnt be so quick to hide anything.

You can respond that we are willing to waste the turns with the warrior as we would waste turns any way sending him back the way he came. We really just want to explore and remove as much black tiles as possible....we hate black tiles. :)

Exploration is not trivial, nor is the chance to meet other civs, nor is it trivial to project a strong image.

Fostering friendship in this way is trivial. GCA will attack if and when it suits them because that is how this game is played and won. They will not retaliate simply because we cross their border with an apology any more than they will be persuaded from making an attack because we accept their condescending attitude now.

No, however whats the point in putting them in a position where they can be annoyed with us, it doesnt benefit us dramatically being able to see into GCA's lands one turn earlier.

I like this one. It's true and it gets us through their territory. What's the point of open borders if we're not going to use them?

Should we tell them we haven't met EVG or CBR?

...we shall of course return the treatment when they arrive near our borders.

I'm sure that when the time comes we will be too concerned about making them mad to do anything but grant immediate permission. So what if we annoy them, they are evidently unworried about annoying us. They granted open borders full knowing that our guy was heading their way, now our request to actually enter their territory is news that needs to be discussed for a week or more?

This is the time to show them that we can be tough too unless they begin treating us with the respect that we have so far given them. Lets not wait, who knows how long, untill they ask to enter our borders and we respond with a sad tit-for-tat.

A response from GCA:

We have now (Monday) concluded our poll on this decision. Seeing as you have not waited, we are bit worried though. Please try to respect the treaties you sign!

In any case, we grant you permission to pass a single warrior scout through our territory in a NorthEast direction, and that direction only.
All other ways will lead to dead ends, rest assured, that is the only way to continue to open land and other civilizations.
Best regards

GCA

OK, we can take that under consideration but the treaty says nothing about them having any control over our movement once permission has been granted.

We should also send a lame apology saying that we thought his last message did give us permission, we're sorry and we promise to read more carefully in the future.

Some of them might buy it and decide to give us another chance thus thwarting a stronger response somewhere down the line.

Also tell them that we'd like to use the road system they will have set up to get us out of their land faster. they also have a scout near our borders- now scouts are non military so naturally they wont have to ask permission however we can also put something in our message back hinting that if they dont let us go wherever neither will we.

According to the treaty they must give us advance notice before a scout enters though.

Indeed but we dont have any clause we can use to delay them during that time such as what they have.

I don't suppose they will fail to give us advance notice but if they do that would forgive our error.

Anyway, I’m about as diplomatic as Kaiser Wilhelm but here is my attempt at an apology letter.

Dear GCA,

Yikes! We are very sorry! We thought your last message was permission, but on closer examination we see that permission must be explicit (or our Domestic Minister was filling in for Foreign Minister and screwed up royally). We do not however see any thing about restricting each others movement once across the border. We need to locate each others cities so that we can both more fully enjoy the benefits of foreign trade and so keep our research up with our competitors. We also need to uncover coastal tiles for a trade route to enable resource trading since we already have sailing. Afterall the whole point of the treaty was to create mutual prosperity. Let’s embrace our burgeoning trade and leave this mistake of ours in the past.

Sincerely,
CFC

Indeed but we dont have any clause we can use to delay them during that time such as what they have.

The treaty doesn’t specify so we can decide that any unit with strength is a military unit and only workers and settlers count as civilians. But no need to mention that to them just yet.
