I am not a warmongering player.... I like nice civil games, though I will mix it up if someone attacks me.... Never really used the General except to build fortifications.... How else should the general be used? Does he provide a bonus, just being in the area?

Adjacent units recieve a combat bonus. You should keep one for this purpose imho.
