Mystery Gems

Playing as the Zulus, I am notified that my influence with two city states has improved due to acquiring gems. This surprises me because I don't recall acquiring gems. I check and sure enough I do have gems. I check my deals with other civilizations, my friendly and allied city states, and even my own cities, but no gems anywhere. I never automate my workers either, and in any case I can't see any gem mines ANYWHERE. It's not like I have a large and complicated empire at this point (1415 AD); just 6 cities, 4 trade deals, and 1 allied city state.

Am I missing something? Where else could these gems be coming from?

Is it possible that you settled a city directly on the tile with gems?

Mystery solved. I didn't settle the city but the AI did and I captured the city.
